Here Comes Santa Claus Santa's coming and his elves have finished the schedule. Santa will arrive with a parade of fire trucks and ambulances at the locations listed below between the hours of 6:30pm and 9:00pm each night. Santa wants everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Parents are reminded that it will be dark outside and difficult for Santa and his helpers to see everyone clearly. Please hold the children tight until the fire trucks stop moving. Santa also wants to tell everyone that he can not get to every street because of the size of the fire trucks. Santa's elves have tried to identify streets that Santa can turn around on. GROUP MEETING PLACES have been established for those children that do not live in or near a subdivision and will be Santa's first stop. Ha...

Southern Maryland Food Bank Struggling to Feed Needy Families   The only food bank in Southern Maryland has been struggling for months to keep its shelves stocked and workers blame the sluggish economy for the pronounced dip in donations. The Southern Maryland Food Bank is usually open on Mondays, but there have been many times this year when the food bank had to close due to the lack of supplies. If the problem continues, it may have to close its doors permanently.   Additional Challenges   The challenge this year, according to the Brenda DiCarol manager of the Southern Maryland Food Bank, is meeting the demand of an unlikely group of customers, hurting from the struggling economy. Increasingly, middle class families are slipping into that need category, so they're not able to donate a...

If you read Craig Barrett's posts, you know he's been working on organizing a 10K race in his community of Hughesville, Maryland.  We know he loves running - his profile picture is from a race!  And in at least three posts, Craig has invited his readers (including us) to participate, either by running or by sponsoring the race.   Now, I subscribe to Craig's blog, and I read each post and something registered but hey!  I'm a candidate for knee replacement - I'm not running any 10K race. Then this morning, my Blackberry started emitting Bach at high volume, and when I picked it up, Craig was on the other line asking me to participate.  So after a few minutes' of personal arm twisting, it's on my calendar - though I won't be running!  It's even for a couple of good causes - the Hughesville...

In reference to the proposed rezoning request of 149+- acres known as the Jenkins Property, Public Hearing: Bill #2008-11 ZMA – Jenkins Property (Chaney), it is my opinion, the proposed rezoning will adversely influence living conditions and or property values at least within a 5 mile radius of the parcel; the proposed change will excessively increase traffic congestion or otherwise negatively affect public safety; the proposed change is speculative and does not have a valid and specific intent and purpose; there are substantial reasons why the property can be used in accordance with its existing zoning; there is convincing demonstration that all uses allowed under the current zoning would be appropriate in the neighborhood and that the character of the neighborhood will not be material...

We're planning for September 6, 2008, so save the date! I'm working on getting the course USTAF certified. Also being held are a 5k walk/run and a Kid's Fun Run. The 10k is a loop and the 5k is an out and back. The 5k will be held immediately following the start of the 10k. I mapped the course using MapMyRun and ran it using my Garmin Forerunner. The distance and time of year are perfect for training for the upcoming fall marathons. Registration, time and registration fees are to be determined. We plan on having food, drinks, music, pre-race stretching and post-race massages. Start and finish are in the Village of Hughesville, MD on Business Route 5. The race will start close to the Red Barn and head south on Business route 5, turn right on Burnt Store Road, turn right on Cracklingtown...

The census-designated place of Hughesville has a total land area of 11.2 miles. Because Hughesville, though small, is considered the strategic geographic center of the Tri-County Southern Maryland region, it houses institutions such as the Electric Company, Humane Society, Economic Development Council, and Board of Realtors, which serve the Tri-County area. The local Fire Department, Hughesville Fire and Rescue Company 2, are located in Hughesville as well. Here's some background on the Village of Hughesville and where we're headed: Settled as part of the Southern Maryland Region in 1643, the area known as Hughesville was established as a crossroads agricultural community in the late 19th century. Hughesville and the surrounding region quickly established their economies and currency ar...

April saw 11 new resale listings and seven new construction listing. As expected, activity has picked up but not enough to substantially increase absorption rate. Like last month, the resale market increased under contracts and volume appears to be realatively steady. I think prices have come down to a point that has generated buyer interest, however prices continue to drift downward in some neighborhoods. Resales were priced between $220,000-$1,199,000. New Construction was priced between $349,900-$989,900. Feel free to contact me with questions. Includes: Benedict Plantation, Bryantown Estates, Cameron Ridge, Carrico Mill, Carriage Crossing, Country Road Estates, Eastern Hills, Indian Creek Estates, Lake Jameson, Oakland Acres, Pine Grove Estates, Sandy Level Estates, Scouts Trail, St...

I emphatically oppose the Chaney application for rezoning to Heavy Industrial from Agricultural Conservative and I implore our Planning Commission to deny the application. Every one of us in Hughesville continues to work hard for our investment. This is where we raise our kids, tend to our homes and produce our goods. It's so painfully obvious to me this location is inappropriate for a Heavy Industrial operation. I am most concerned with peripheral development around the Village of Hughesville. It's reasonable to surmise once one parcel goes Heavy Industrial, a precedent is set and other applications and approvals will soon follow. According to the 2003 Maryland State Highway Administration Traffic Volume Map, there were of an average of 14,725 daily trips in that approximate location....

A lot of communities have old railroad right-of-of ways converted to walk, run, bike trails for public use. We really don't have that in Hughesville, MD, so I thought I'd share where I run as I train for my marathons. I live in Carriage Crossing which is off of Route 381. It's a two lane road with wide shoulders in some places. All of the roads I run on in the area are two lane roads and most of them have enough of a shoulder to run. Of course these roads were built in the 1920's and aren't designed to handle the traffic that's on them now. But, that's another blog post...The main artery that takes me east or west of the Hughesville Bypass is Route 231. Route 231 connects Calvert County to Charles County at Benedict, MD. I never know which way I want to go until I get to Jimmie's Corne...
