Agents, staff, friends, and family of Keller Williams Realty Mid Maine had a great time helping out at The Root Cellar in Lewiston Maine for RED Day 2011.  Keller Williams Realty has a strong commitment to volunteerism and giving back to our communities.  RED Day is a celebration of that commitment and a chance for Keller Williams Realty offices throughout the continent to conduct volunteer projects all on the same day. The weather here in Lewiston cooperated beautifully.  The morning was cooler and slightly cloudy while we worked to clean up the grounds and then nice and sunny when it came time for the community cookout!

A few weeks ago I wrote about the city of Lewiston's plans to hold an auction to get rid of the piles and piles of old equipment and other things filling up city warehouses and buildings. I promised an update on how it went.  The items that I was most interested in were being sold in large lots (bicycles, etc.) so I was not able to get them, but the auction was a HUGE success. At one point, the city estimates there were about 500 people milling about looking at items.  When all was said and done the city netted a whopping $83,102!  They were able to get rid of almost everything, with the exception of a few broken office machines from the 80s.  Nope, Mainers don't throw anything out since you never know what might come in handy later. They were even able to sell 18,000 yards of reclaimed...

Market Report for homes sold in Lewiston Maine in August 2010. There were 18 residential properties sold in Lewiston Maine last month.  One more than August of last year.  However, the median price for residential homes dipped from $139,000 last year in August to $135,500 this year.  That means that half of the homes sold for more and half sold for less. The most interesting news from this report is that 7 out of the 18 homes actually sold for MORE than their list price.  We have started to see multiple offers come in on desirable homes that are priced competitively.  This trend is a change from last year.  Also the Days on Market (# of days from listing to closing of the sale) has fallen to an average of 90 days.  This is encouraging news for sellers. The City of Lewiston Maine has decided to hold an aution to get rid of surplus items and perhaps bring in some much needed revenue.  A wide variety of items will be available from asphalt trucks, misc. vehicles, appliances, and even old stop lights! The city had thought of holding a giant yard sale, but opted for an auction instead.  This could be truly interesting.  I'm sure you could find some use for an old stoplight!   The auction will be held at the Lewiston Sand and Salt Facility at 195 River Road on September 11, 2010 and will start at 9:00am sharp. Check out the Sun Journal story for even more information.  Even if you don't plan on bidding on anything, it will be fun to see what the city has ammassed over time.  See you there! UPDATE:  The auction was an incredible success!  At...

So you have ROYALLY messed up!  You have done something you never imagined you would do.  You have destroyed something that can't completely be made whole again, hurt people's feelings, shaken a community, and others had to come behind you and try to put the pieces back together. Now what?  Basically you have two choices. You could blame others and rationalize your actions, as so many have tried to do with varying degrees of success, or you could tell the truth and face the consequences of your actions. Such was the choice facing one young man in Lewiston Maine, and while what he did with two of his friends was reprehensible, he has chosen to "face the music" and deal directly with what he did. A little over a week ago, vandals knocked over about 150 headstones at one of the historic ce...

Lewiston Maine City Building & Clock Tower (1892) The Lewiston City Building is a true architectural beauty.  Built in 1892 across from the scenic Kennedy Park in the Baroque Revival style, it replaced the previous city building which was destroyed by fire in 1890. The copper clad domed tower of the building reaches 185 feet skyward and features a fully functional weight driven, pendulum regulated mechanical tower clock.  The City of Lewiston purchased the clock in 1891 for $1265 from clock maker Edward Howard.   The actual clock works originally resided up in the tower, but were moved in 2002 when the city restored the clock and moved it to a public area of City Hall to be enjoyed by visitors.  Encased in glass, the historic and fully functional clock now rests on the 2nd floor of t...

August 2010 events at the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston Maine. If you have not yet visited Lewiston's Franco-American Heritage Center, you will want to make a point of stopping by.  The beauty of the building alone is worth your visit.  In addition, the center offers a never ending array of cultural events for the community. When the building, located at 46 Cedar Street in Lewiston, was no longer going to be used as a church in 2000, it was turned over to a local community group and the Franco-American Heritage Center was born.  A corner stone of the community, the center provides entertainment and events in keeping with it's mission: "The mission of the Franco-American Heritage Center is to celebrate and preserve the Franco-American heritage while welcoming the cultures o...

Despite the "Doom & Gloom" reported in the national media about recent real estate market conditions, Maine saw a 24% increase in the number of single family home sales in June 2010 when compared to June of last year. What does this mean to those looking to buy or sell a home in the Lewiston Maine area? It simply means that we are experiencing a trend towards stability and growth in the Lewiston real estate market.  Mainers taking the plunge into the current market are in a much better position than many around the country. There are still great deals out there for those looking to purchase a home, but we have seen a stabilization of prices.  The number of homes sold in the area has continued a slow and steady increase in 2010 instead of the hit or miss sales of last year. June 2010 als...
