About 20 miles due West of Big Rapids is a little place called Bitely, MI. I lived there for a few years and absolutely fell in love with the area. If you are looking for connecting with nature it starts in Bitely, MI. The town itself is not very big but the hearts of it's residents more than fill it. With a few thriving businesses like the Bitely Tavern, Bitely Store and the Up North Gift Shop along with a post office and Sippy Flats Party Store has all of your necessities covered. Lilley Township Fire Department is right in town so they can be ready to go if needed and they even have an ambulance and first responders to help until the medics can arrive. Here is another milestone for this recession....or is it a recession?  Treasury Bills just sold for zero percent interest....now that is an investment I can understand. It beats the stock market where you can be smiling today and crying tomorrow...lately it has been more tears than smiles. How low can we go? Here is another one for you to think about.  General Motors employs 96,000 US workers, pays health care for 1 million workers, retirees and dependants.  Now how do you do that?   OH there is more.....they pay pensions to 475,000 on top of that! Do you really think they have a chance of paying back anything the government gives them of our money? Sailors Pines is  a privately owned preserve of the stately Michigan White Pine where the public is welcome to visit this glimpse of our state's past.  Near Croton Pond, stands a testament to Michigan's past, a virgin old growth forest of stately white pines, towering over 100 feet tall and up to 24 inches in diameter.  A small plaque marks the entrance which dedicates this forest to the original owners, William and Elizabeth Sailors. The Sailors came from Indiana and became engaged in the lumbering business here in Michigan in the late 1800's. Their son, David, saw all the white pine harvested from this area by the late 1890's and practically disappear from the land.  David discovered this white pine forest in the 1920's.
