Because everyone needs a little more sparkle in their lives! I love how these lights hang from the third floor ceiling down to the floor at the Mall of America. Hundreds of bright lights twinkled and provide a beautiful backdrop in one of the many wings of the Mall. Located near the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport, this is one of the largest indoor mall's in the United States and it features an indoor theme park...perfect destination for all types of weather.

What If You Can't Afford to Update Your Home to Sell? Realtor's and Home Stagers alike will tell you to update your home whenever possible, especially in the key areas like the kitchen and bathrooms. But what if you just can't do it?  My recent client lived in her home 45 years and had done nothing to it. She had moved to a Senior Living Complex and needed to sell her home but had very limited resources to do any updates.  So what should you do?? First, bring in a professional Home Stager and an Experienced Realtor to help you determine what is the best use of your funds.  Prioritize that list, do what you can but all in all make is sizzle and make it appeal to the buyer! In this home, the buyer was most likely going to be a first time homeowner thus someone young. If you can't do much....

Chez Daniel is a hidden Minneapolis jewel that is not to be missed!  Tucked away inside the Embassy Suites Hotel at 2800 American Boulevard West in Bloomington, Chez Daniel is an explosion of French flavor that was a wonderful surprise! My mother and I arrived at Chez Daniel  about 20 minutes before the restaurant opened, so, they wonderful staff and Chez Daniel accommodated us with a nice bottle of wine that we enjoyed by the water fountain in the hotel lobby until Chez Daniel opened.  The manager on duty Kadija (that spelling is probably off) was from Morocco and she expertly guided us through fabulous choices on the menu.  Our waiter Christian was spectacular and the food...oh my, the food! Both my mother and I had the rack of lamb which was pan seared in provencal herbs to perfectio...

With Easter arriving this weekend, I thought I would share the Peepmobile that quite literally rolled into the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota just a few weeks ago! I personally am not a big fan of Peeps candy, or anything marshmallow for that matter. But I did think the bright yellow VW bug with the giant Peep on top was worth taking a photo to share! Have a wonderful and safe Easter weekend!

Love em or hate em...Everyone has an opinion on Peeps! In my opinion they are barely edible but I have one son that loves them! We visited Mall of America in Bloomington this weekend and they have a new store devoted to the Peep. It's not just a candy store either...though there are Peeps and every flavor of Mike and Ike you can imagine! They also have socks, t-shirts and assorted Peep related gifts. I do have to admit, I kind of like the glowing giant Peep at the center of the store.

If you are selling a home in Bloomington today you will find it can be quite a challenge, especially considering that nearly half of the competitive listings are short sales or foreclosures. Real estate values have been declining in part because of the lower asking prices offered through banks who need to bring down their real estate owned inventory. Roughly half of the closed sales in the curret MN real estate market has come from traditional home sellers. Are you in the search for help to sell your Bloomington home? Using a Bloomington Real Estate Agent It's never been more important to work with a Bloomington real estate agent who studies recent trends in Twin Cities market values. When we come out and visit your property to complete a Competitive Market Analysis (CMA), we will compa...

If you are looking for a lower payment on your car insurance in Bloomington, you have to call the Schwake Agency.   I was quite shocked when I saved over $30 dollars per month over my other premium insurance that I had through my other insurance company. (I was with that company for 5 years!) You can even save more if you have a homeowners policy or renters policy with them too!   That extra $30 comes in handy with the increase in gas prices.  Not only did I lower my monthly payment, but their staff is top notch as well when it comes to costumer service.  They have someone in the office at all business hours.  I even had a question for them on the friday after Thanksgiving and they were open!  After my experience with the Schwake Agency, I think I probably would have switch regardles if...

First Time Buyer's - Durham Executive Group Becky and John received a phone call from a young couple looking to purchase their first single family home. We worked with them in setting up a detailed search for properties meeting their search critieria and after one full day the four of us went looking at homes until the buyer's found their dream home. An offer was made, negotiated, and the home passed both a radon and home inspection. The transaction has been seamless and the family will be moving into their new Bloomington, MN home at the end of July.

When Staging a Home Keep the Targeted Buyer in Mind. Doing so is extremely important and can determine success or failure with the Home Staging. Am I staging a downtown loft or a home in the suburbs? Who lives in this neighborhood? These are some of the questions I ask myself. Point in fact: When I went to do the bid for this condo I noticed it was extremely quiet, not a lot of activity in the common areas and a few people of the older generation walking through the halls.  I asked the Realtor if the buyer would likely be someone downsizing or a young professional wanting to entertain clients since the condo was located on an Exclusive Private Golf Course. I was told most likely someone downsizing. When I stopped to chat with the Maintenance Manager I was told the average age of owners ...

Vacuum breakers (aka - backflow preventers) have always been one of those pesky Truth-In-Housing repairs for homeowners in Minneapolis and Bloomington, but those aren't the only cities where they're required.  They're actually a requirement of the Minnesota State Plumbing Code, section 4715.2100 (D). Cheap Vacuum Breakers Don't Meet Code Part of the requirement for a vacuum breaker says any new device must be field testable. The minimum standard for a vacuum breaker meeting this requirement is ASSE 1052.  Vacuum breakers that conform to this standard are about twice the size of the really cheap vacuum breakers that you'll find at most home improvement stores, and they cost about four times as much. At left is a vacuum breaker conforming to ASSE 1052.  You can see that it's about twice ...

As I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, I find a lot of gas leaks, and I always try to make it easy for a repair technician to find the leaks.  I take a photo of the leak with a bunch of soapy bubbles coming out of it, I mark the exact location of the leak with orange tape, and I write “Gas Leak” on it.  You can't miss it. So why is it so difficult for the GAS COMPANY to find these leaks? Ironically, I’ve found that almost every time Centerpoint Energy comes out to repair a gas leak that I've found during a home inspection, they end up leaving the house without fixing the leak.  I’m not alone in my findings – I’ve heard this same sentiment expressed by many other Minnesota home inspectors, and this last month has been particularly frustrating. Example #1: I inspected a home that had alrea...

Two weeks ago I wrote a blog about the most common places to find gas leaks, and I said I'd follow up with a blog about gas connectors - those short, flexible, corrugated things that are used to connect gas appliances to gas piping.  Today I'll go over the items that I look for on gas connectors while doing home inspections.  I'll cover the most common installation defects, and I'll go over the differences between new and old connectors. Gas Connectors are not a substitute for gas piping. To start, here's a photo of a gas connector - it's that corrugated yellow thingy.  Most newer gas connectors look just like this one.  Remember, a gas connector is used to get from the gas piping tothe appliance - that's all.  Gas connectors should never be used as a substitute for gas piping.  This m...
