On Saturday morning I headed out for my weekly listing route to check vacant properties and put up name riders. I was thinking about my job, why I love my job and how blessed I am to have the career that I do. Sometimes in the thick of 'it' I forget to be grateful, but I am. And I always will be. Anyways, I had my kiddos in the backseat and we were loud. Singing and playing and enjoying the life.  I was contemplating how hard it is to balance family, work, kid's school, work  and all of it into a tidy package. SHIVER, ELK RIVER!  This is the third annual celebration of Shiver, Elk River.    There will be quite a number of local events set for Saturday, February 9, 2013.  Thanks to the Elk River Star News for the rundown of events.   •Get Ready to Jump: The central feature of Shiver Elk River is the Shiver Plunge at Lake Orono. Last year nearly 100 people participated in the plunge which helped to raise more than $13,000 for 18 different local nonprofits. If you park on Elk River streets between 2 a.m. to 6 a.m., you WILL get a $30 parking ticket.    Because it snowed last Thursday, some people may still be unaware of the parking restrictions, which began on November 15 and will continue through April 15th, 2013. The restrictions are simple:  no vehicle may be left parked on a public roadway in the city of Elk River between the hours of 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.   The purpose of this restriction is to allow for the safe and efficient overnight removal of snow and ice as well as other seasonal road maintenance work.   So unless you want to fork over some of your hard-earned cash to the court, remember to find off-street parking for your vehicle overnight.   Stay safe out there and remember to move the vehicle at night to a safe location off-street.   11/25/2012

Did you watch the Vikings beat Detroit on Sunday?  Were you at the game?  If you were at the game, you might become part of history.   The American Legion of Elk River and the Minnesota National Guard were on hand for Sunday’s Minnesota Vikings win over Detroit to have the world’s biggest thank you card for the troops of Monticello’s 257th Military Police Company, stationed in Afghanistan. The card is 16 feet high and 48 feet long. The goal is to collect 257,000 signatures prior to these deployed troops coming home to be recognized by the Guiness Book of World Records.    Isn’t that something?  11/13/2012

Pickleball is a cross between badminton, tennis and ping pong and will be played indoors at Lions Park Center. The new Senior Citizen Coordinator, for the City of Elk River, Annette Bonin,  has that on tap for the seniors.  Bonin has been working with seniors for over 25 years.  And, she replaces Sue Kostanshek who recently retired on June 7th, 2012.  I wrote about Sue recently, too.     Annette Bonin . The activity center, at 312 Proctor Avenue,  is for people age 55 and older “but we don’t check IDs,” Bonin joked.  The other senior center at the Guardian Angels campus in Elk River has been turned into a wellness center. Bonin said they continue to offer programs in conjunction with Guardian Angels and work closely with the people there.  The activity center averages about 102 people a... 10/27/2012

If you have ever been to the Elk River Library, you probably know Mick Stoffers.  She has been part of the Elk River Library for 27 years.  She is also the library’s branch manager.  October 31, 2012, has been proclaimed Mick Stoffers Day in Elk River by the City Council.  Mick is retiring, and the Council has given her a plaque for her service and this honor.  I hope she received some tribute from the library system as well.  She has given Elk River a continuity and pride in our library that other cities likely envy.  It will be a bit strange not to see her there anymore, but we all wish her a long and very happy retirement!
