Since there are many questions to be answers I thought I would provide a summary of what's going on right now. As of Friday the May 29th there is still a large amount of money available to be lent. Reports of up to 138 billion available seems to be an accurate number according to the Journal of Accountancy as of May 23. Recently the IRS has stepped up there audit activity simply by contesting simple tax returns.One of the strategies that I have seen just in the last couple of weeks is questioning entries on tax returns by requesting supporting information. One tax payer who had prepared there own tax return contacted me regarding self employment deductions on there scheldule C. What I found interesting is that after reviewing the letter and the return the IRS hadn't bothered to even look at the scheldule on the return. Most audits these days are being done by mail instead of a live person. Hence a correpondence audit to the return based on the discrepancy. Are you really being auditied. No. These are proposed changes. Still time to act. The IRS gives you a response date. The CP 2000 serves as both an intial request for infomation and proposing the change in the tax.What do you do? Commuicate with the IRS. You have 30 days to agree or disagree.
