Hello friends! The first half of 2020 is almost behind us. Part of the year is a blur due to COVID-19. Despite the blur, my digital calendar reminds me of what I've been up to: The year started off with a bang. January and February were filled with buyers, sellers, inspections, and closings. I stayed busy with volunteer activities, networking meetings, and seminars. Plus, I completed my Seniors Real Estate Specialist designation at the end of February.   March, as the expression goes, came in like a lion. Surrounding states were experiencing coronavirus outbreaks. Spring break was in full force in the south, and many residents were vacationing on the beaches and mountains. Mississippi's first case was diagnosed March 12. Our governor declared a state of emergency March 14. Everything fr...

Gathered around the dinner table, my family started a lively discussion about the names of each generation. I'm a proud Baby Boomer, and my son is a Millenial (although he would argue he's a Gen X) and the kids around the table tried to decide where they fit in, whether it was Millenial (Gen Y), Gen Z, or Generation Alpha. So, as I began studying for my SRES Designation (Seniors Real Estate Specialist), I was fascinated to review the dates of birth and characteristics of each generation, and how these groups relate to buying or selling real estate. The GI Generation, also known as the Greatest Generation, were those born between 1901-1924. These were the teenagers during the Great Depression and they served during WWII. Their numbers are dwindling as this age group is over the age of 95....

June is National Home Ownership Month! I am a firm believer in home ownership. I purchased my first home at age 17. Since then, I've bought and sold over a dozen PRIMARY residences, not including fixer uppers and flips. Perhaps I move more frequently than most, but with each move, I was able to reinvest my profits and "move up" in value. Did I mention I love real estate? As a child of Depression Era parents, I learned at an early age home ownership was the ONLY way to go. Mortgage payments were substantially less than they are today, but so was the cost of living. In 1950, the average annual income for the middle class was roughly $3,000, which would equate to around $29,000 today. (Courtesy of a quick web search.)  In college, one of my assignments was to present a speech to the class....

Rankin County is sponsoring Spring Clean Up Week that begins in a few days. Everyone can participate in Spring Cleaning, especially since last week's storms. The clean up is not only for yard debris; it's the perfect time to dispose of bulky, unusable items, including "white goods" (refrigerators, freezers, and other large appliances) and tires at no charge. The date begins Monday April 29 and continues through Saturday May 4. The primary recycling center for Brandon is located at 710 Marquette Road, but there are 9 other drop off locations throughout the county. All locations will be open between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.Image courtesy of zirconicusso at FreeDigitalPhotos.net    Please contact Rankin County Solid Waste at 601-825-9213 if you have questions.Remember to sort your usual recy...

April 22 is Earth Day. Recycling, re-purposing, and reusing items in different ways is as much a part of me as breathing and walking. I cringe when I see recyclables tossed in the trash or when the recycle bin is used inappropriately. If food waste or glass is tossed into a bin, the entire batch is contaminated, so it's important to recycle responsibly.  Do you recall a few weeks ago when a beached whale washed ashore with over 48 pounds of plastic waste inside its body? This is not an isolated incident. Have you ever been boating and someone casually tossed a bottle or can into the ocean or lake? Let's do better. We can all take steps to reduce our ecological footprint. Before you recycle or toss an item away, think for a moment if the item can be up-cycled, used for a kids craft, used...

Vendors, volunteers and tasters had a wonderful afternoon at the 2019 Taste of Flowood. The event was held at Mirror Lake Plaza on Lakeland Drive. Food tents were set up outside while restaurant owners served samples of their signature dishes to the delight of ticket holders.           The weather could not have been more perfect. The food was scrumptious, and a local band entertained participants throughout the evening.   Over 35 vendors served food and liquid refreshment to the sold out crowd. There was a vast array of tasty treats, from BBQ to grilled oysters, shrimp, chicken salad, steak, prime rib, sub sandwiches, homemade mac and cheese, tea, coffee, and specialty drinks, and a wide variety of cakes, cookies, puddings, and tiramisu.   There were activities for the kids too, with a...

Do You Love Where You Live?  My February postcard with its Valentines Day theme is one of my favorite marketing pieces. The flip side contains a message about allowing me to play matchmaker to help you obtain the home of your dreams. I've always considered myself a real estate matchmaker. I pay attention to what my client tells me they want, then put my years of experience to work to find it. These postcards were distributed to hundreds of Brandon, MS residents in time for Valentines Day. If buying a new home is one of your goals this year, share your dreams with me. We'll create a plan so you will soon love where you live. #lovewhereyoulive #letmeplaymatchmaker #loveyournest View homes for sale in Central MS Happy Valentines Day! Image courtesy of renjith krishnan at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

I'd never thought of taking photos of the changing season until fellow blogger George Souto introduced me to the gorgeous fall colors of New England. Last year was the first year I took photos of the changing season, and I wanted to share this years changing colors, too. Most of my readers will recognize the view as Castlewoods Golf Course, or specifically, the view from my back yard. Probably the most unusual photo I ever captured was of the ball drop in September. This photo shows a lush green landscape, with no sign of fall in sight. I'm using this photo as the benchmark. The next photo was taken in mid October. You'll notice the leaves on the hardwoods are beginning to turn and the golf course isn't the vibrant green it was in September. For consistency sake, all photos were taken at...

603 Wildberry Drive in Patrick Farms Subdivision in Pearl MS is now closed.   I had the privilege to represent the sellers when they purchased this home three years ago, and was happy they contacted me to handle the sale of their home now that they are selling. It's bittersweet, though, because clients eventually become good friends and you hate saying good-bye. This 4 Bedroom, 2 Bath brick home located on the 7th tee in this golf course neighborhood has an open floor plan with new light fixtures, granite counter tops and stainless appliances in the kitchen, a spacious family room with  fireplace, and lots of natural lighting.  The new owners were thrilled to purchase this property and I'm sure they will enjoy their home for years to come. If you're in the market for a home in a golf co...

Murphy's Law: What CAN go wrong WILL go wrong This post was inspired by a missing prescription. I went to my doctor who said she would phone in my prescription. After work I went to the pharmacy, only to be told they had no record of an order. They blamed the doctor's office, who was closed by this time, and suggested perhaps I was at the wrong pharmacy!   Regardless of how much I protested, they didn't budge. The next morning, the doctor's office called to confirm my prescription WAS called in, this time with a confirmation (?), and my script was filled.  So, WHY did I think this relates to real estate? If anything goes wrong, someone's going to point a finger. It's human nature to want to place blame, and I see it happen all the time. A real estate transaction has many moving parts. L...

Halloween is approaching and is a childs' third favorite holiday behind Christmas and Thanksgiving. While older teens and adults may enjoy costume parties, kids can't resist Trick or Treating. Follow these 10 tips to ensure a safe and fun-filled Halloween: Know when Halloween will be observed in your area. Strange as it may sound, many communities designate alternate nights for Trick or Treating if the 31st falls on Sunday. Check your neighborhood Facebook page or the city's website to be sure. Teach your children to look all ways when crossing the street. Look left, right, then left again when crossing and continue to look while crossing. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk FACING traffic as far off the road as possible. Decorate costumes and bags with re...

The City of Brandon had a Town Hall meeting recently to discuss Community Development in the city and the Police and Fire Department budget.  Two important announcements were made during the meeting. First, Brandon was named the Second Safest City in the State of Mississippi by the independent group SafeWise. SafeWise determines the rankings by reviewing data from FBI crime statistics.  Meanwhile, our neighbor Madison, MS was named the number one Safest City in the State. Both of these cities are part of Metro Jackson and are to be commended for the outstanding job they do to keep their residents safe. The next announcement Mayor Butch Lee made was that the fire insurance rating for residents of Brandon has fallen from a Class 5 to a Class 4. This rating will effectively lower the insur...

Barking dogs might deter burglars, but they can also discourage buyers when your home is for sale. An otherwise desirable property might be rejected because the buyer doesn't want to hear Brutus and Fido barking each time they walk outside. While showing homes this particular day, I arrived before the clients and went to unlock the door. Immediately the neighbors dogs in the fenced yard went berserk, barking at my presence.A few minutes later, the buyers arrived. Three Boxers in unison began to bark incessantly while my clients stopped and stared (at the dogs). The tour of the home went well and the buyers were very interested. We stepped out front to look at the exterior, just as a dog walker came down the cul-de-sac. In a bizarre twist of fate, one of the Boxers BROKE THROUGH the wooden...
