Taking a walk in my neighborhood in Apex, North Carolina, the other day (when it finally got warm) I passed the "horse farm" down the road.  Surprise! There were now 2 "donkeys' in there with the horses.  What is the difference between a donkey, a mule, and an jackass anyway? I guess people never act like donkeys!  They can be stubborn as a mule, or acting like an a****, but is there any analogy to a donkey? Just to keep this blog family friendly, I'm going to refer to these 2 cuties as donkeys. The mother donkey was very friendly, but as all mothers in the animal kingdom, very protective of  her baby.  She let us pet her baby only after she had checked us out first.

It was so quiet out, barely even the sound of snow crunching under my feet,  when I went out this morning to take pictures of the snow. It's a fairly rare occurrence here in Apex North Carolina to have measurable snow. We didn't have any snow last year.  To all you people up North and in Colorado (Mary!),  you can laugh at us because this few inches of snow grinds the area to a hault. BUT, school has already been cancelled for tomorrow and businesses are closed.  Yep, we just wait until it melts and hibernate.  Ahh, sleeping in late, reading a good book, and drinking hot cocoa, at least for one Monday.

Raleigh, Cary and Apex, North Carolina Brace for Big Winter Storm! Yes folks, it's true. We really do get some occasional snow here in the Raleigh/ Cary/ Apex area. In fact, in an average year we get about 7" of the white stuff. However, for the past few years, we've had no snow accumulation at all. Sure we had a dusting here and there, enough to close our award winning schools or cause delayed openings, but certainly not enough to go sledding or even make a snowman! But tonight, beginning around midnight, and lasting all day Saturday, the Raleigh/ Cary/ Apex area is scheduled to be blasted with a real live winter snow storm! Predictions have us getting anywhere from 5"-10" of snow! The grocery store parking lots were packed; the home improvement stores were buzzing with folks buying up...

With all that is going on in the world, from the earthquake in Haiti to events here at home, we all know what a great organization the Red Cross is and how they help people in need. And of course we all want to help some way. Here in Apex, NC we have a lot of very creative and generous people who have thought of a fun way to get people together and work for a worthy cause. One of them is my good friend and former client,Deena Boos, who not only is  a wonderful Stampin Up demonstrator, but she is a compassionate person who is willing to use her talents to help others.  While working at the Blue Tiger Gift Shop in Apex, North Carolina recently, she had a young lady, Christine Schulze from Apex High School,  stop in. Christine is working on raising money for the Red Cross. Deena generously...

Apex, North Carolina has as it's motto 'The Peak of Good Living", and for good reason. Although the town, like most of the country, has been hit by the economic downturn, we haven't been hit with the high number of foreclosures that are affecting other areas. Prosepctive home owners, bargain hunters and investors can still find a good deal though. Currently in Apex there are 9 homes listed as "foreclosures" or in the foreclosure process, ranging in price from $180,000 to $674,900. For Instance: this lovely home in a neighborhood close to good schools is priced to sell at $180,000. With 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and a 2 car garage, it sits on a cul de sac for privacy.       Want a home that feels like it's out in the country but only minutes to shopping and work? This 2200 sf home on over an...

Crowder Park was filled with people enjoying the first sunny day in a week yesterday,  as were the ducks. Because of all the recent rain, the pond was muddy, causing the reflections and the ripples to give a impressionistic, look, almost as those Monet could have painted it.

Sunday in Apex, North Carolina Playing with my new camera that I bought yesterday, and trying out the things I'm learning in my photography class, I was hoping for a nice day to take some nature pictures. Alas, it rained on & off all day, but at least it's warm.  And after the storm, there's the silence. We often have rainbows, although not today. We were treated instead to the beauty of this unusual yellow sky.

This year the Kraft Family YMCA in the Apex/ Holly Springs area of North Carolina held what is hoped to be an annual New Year's Day "Resolution Run".    Just as the wonderful staff at the YMCA had arranged last year, members had a month to sign up and get in condition to either run or walk on the indoor track on New Year's Day.  Eight times around the track is a mile, and 26.2 times is equal to a 5k.  They goal was to finish in less than 45 minutes.  So on a cold grey January 1, 2010, runner's assembled inside, were given their cool new t-shirts, a number pinned to them, and at 9:45am off they went.        This year there were quite a few "walkers" and older people out there starting the new year right! Of course there were several great runners who "won", but everyone who participated ...

With all the new commerce going on in historic Downtown Apex lately, it seems like people from all over have heard that Apex is the place to be. I spent some time "downtown" last week and stopped into the newest store- Tobacco Road Outdoors.  Tobacco Road Outdoors  is owned and managed by Larry & Brad Hipps, a father- son duo who recently moved to Apex from the mountain area of North Carolina, near Asheville. Both are avid outdoor enthusiasts as is evident by the knowledge they have about their products. The store is located right at the foot of the intersection of Center St and Salem St.  where the heart of the city begins in the newly refurbished Tobacco & Mule Exchange building.     Entering from the back parking lot, even the back entrance to this new Shopping & Business center is i...

I was driving into the town of Apex last Saturday and noticed all the communities with beautiful holiday decorations on their entrance ways.  In the 8 years that the small community of Crooked Brook has been built, we homeowners have never decorated the entrance way, even though all of our homes are adorned with lights and wreaths. Being in an unusually good Holiday mood, I decided to take it upon myself to bring Crooked Brook into the holiday spirit. Having access to the new craft store AC Moore in Apex now, I stopped in and bought some inexpensive plain wreaths. By adding a large red bow and some small brightly colored ornaments, I had 2 wreaths in under an hour. I emailed some of the Homeowner's Association Board members when it was done to let them know how they magically appeared o...

No beautiful Silent Sunday picture today, although it was a gorgeous fall day here in Apex.  No picture of Apex Town park where I went walking yesterday, but my camera batteries had died. Nor am I writing any local real estate stats or news stories about happenings in the Raleigh area. Just a few musings to get me past my bloggers block and start the week. Like a lot of people, my husband and I enjoy reading the Sunday morning newspaper together. The kitchen table is often covered in ads, coupons being clipped out (and rarely used) and coffee cups.  And of course the best part- the comic page! However, have you noticed that in order to save paper and therefore save money, newspapers are shrinking the size of the individual comic strips? A comic strip that used to take up a whole width o...
