Asheville Real Estate Journal   Knowing her aptitude for finding excellent products,  it was really no surprise when, on a recent visit to one of the homes our Green-Builder friend had under construction here in Asheville, we discovered glass tile—and in a place we had not expected—on the floor of the laundry room! (see photo)   REALLY??  We knew that she is always on the lookout for "all-inclusive design" and sustainable elements she can incorporate in her projects. She is especially intrigued when elements not only are environmentally responsible, but infuse spaces with an artistic quality. But on the floor? YES! This creative professional had assembled a gorgeous presentation of color and light. No trepidation when stepping on this recycled glass. It simply sparkles with an invitat...

Asheville Real Estate Journal   Recently a number of Asheville  REALTORS ® got together to talk about a wide range of subjects: Trends, client investment strategies, land, conservation and issues that come up during "deal evaluation". And we stirred up quite a conversation on the potential impact of (un)retiring “boomers”  on the marketplace. Was this all part of the "use change" process? We could picture how this might look... .   Examples: A pocket neighborhood... or maybe small apartment building  converted for Aging-in-Place – that Golden Girls concept. How about that?!!  There might be some challenges, for sure-  a single electric meter and A/C units shared by several apartments. But the purchase price would leave room for universal design improvements.  And, 1031 investors could ...

Asheville Real Estate Journal   “ It is the baby boomers that right now are shaping many areas of the housing market."   As Thanksgiving Day approaches, I was interested to read an article in which friends and family ties are highlighted.  In an article for Property Observer,    Peter Chittenden takes a look at how “Boomers” retirement plans are impacting the housing market, and points out that the desire to stay connected is a key factor to be considered As life expectancy among the boomers continues to rise, a more complex housing market is evolving...[and]... the traditional idea of retirement and retirement housing has shifted and continues to do so with some very dramatic consequences for the housing market,” writes Chittenden. Here in Asheville, known as the creative retirement t...

More than 50 percent of USDA’s farm loans now go to beginning farmers. ..These programs were made possible by the 2014 Farm Bill, which builds on historic economic gains in rural America over the past five years, while achieving meaningful reform and billions of dollars in savings for taxpayers....”   I am realized that  this could be exciting news...

Asheville Real Estate Journal   "Boomers" Chris and Chris, partners on their Post-50 adventure,  wanted “something small” and on one level- “Chris has iffy knees,” they told me. And they wanted to downsize from their large home on the west coast.  They were looking at the options and already had downloaded the self-guided eBooklet (see below) we wrote for our clients. We sat down to talk about possibilities.     Finding a super energy efficient home filled with natural light, accessibility features for Chris and Chris and their visitors who desired to “age in place”  was on the agenda- and it had to be both functional and beautiful. It also had to incorporate non-toxic materials (Chris has allergies) – and be great for staying power – as per a  lifelong home.  So we took a look at i...

"Where the weather is okay this year the Democrats won't necessarily get a bump -- they just won't have to deal with the drag on turnout," said , business weather expert at The Weather Channel...”   (weather.com) Interestingly, the good news seems to be that “bad weather's impact on the electorate's mood favors the safe choice of incumbents, not necessarily candidates from one party, and doesn't necessarily suppress turnout.” Here’s a view from our Asheville cabin this morning. Wonder if the melting “powdered sugar” on the slippery upper regions might impact North Carolina’s Senate race? I doubt it. In fact,  I’m heading down the wet-leafed slope real soon ... .((*:*))

AGING IN A PALACE and Inevitable Life Course Transitions- Putting yourself on a kind track  means change. Right? And many important decisions. One of the most important decisions to make is where you choose to live. And it dawns on you that planning for AT LAST Homes where accessible, universal design allows function and aesthetics to coexist makes sense. So you find yourself bringing up topics such as:  Aging-in-Palace© vs  Aging-in-Place, ease of navigation where the light-filled main floor (see photo) reflects an all-inclusive Universal Design.   Photo courtesy of Darryl Rantis Architect, Asheville, N.C.   What is "universal design"? Let's Get Creative-Housing, Asheville Style  A 2014 report from the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies and the AARP Foundation  says,   “While there are significant challenges ahead, the potential is there for older adults to have a higher quality of life than ever before, and for communities to be increasingly livable and vibrant as a result.   But effective action will require concerted efforts at all levels of government as well as by the private and nonprofit sectors, and through the advocacy of older adults themselves.” Although the report highlights a potentially unpleasant financial outlook for those who would prefer to age-in-place, we are always thinking creatively here in Asheville. Take for example the following two (2) ideas for putting a 1031 Like Kind Exchange Invest...

Asheville in the Mountains-  Here is a sweet spot for  quality of life  where the   mountain sentinels (see photo) and waterfalls are natures colorful expression of welcome,  and there is that sense of place that forgives the often daily reminders of very harsh realities.                                   mountain sentinels - natures expression of a colorful welcome     Here  too  is a positive sense of community, an uncommon blend of neighborliness with  “cultural creative” verve.  Some say Asheville, N.C.  offers unexplored corners where a new vision of an old tradition reveals itself. Possibly this can be attributed to the heritage of the indigenous peoples as well as the Scots-Irish pioneers who settled the area. But others will tell you that the "uncommon blend" is the result of...

Just today we read an article about the intriguing subject of pocket neighborhoods. As you will might already know, this is s a subject of on-going conversation here in Asheville,N.C.   As we talk about and consider community culture -  ecovillages, co-housing developments,  naturally occurring communities (NOC)  and in "old-timey" neighborhoods- we wonder if, in fact,  community culture could be a coming trend in design and if it will include lifelong homes and  "aging-in-place" ... .                         Natural Neighborhoods Graphic Courtesy of Ross Chapin Architects “Pocket neighborhoods are a clustered group of neighboring houses or apartments gathered around a shared open space — a garden courtyard, a pedestrian street, or a reclaimed alley.”  Many communities are taking the p...

As the weather cools down, our thoughts turn to visions of … leaf piles, broken gutters, and stopped-up chimneys. Or rather, how to deal with such household chores before the winter sets in. Here are 10 jobs that should top your priority list this fall. 1. Change batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. It’s a great idea to do this on the day Daylight Savings Time ends. Check the expiration on your fire extinguisher and review your escape plan with your family as well. 2. Inspect your fireplace. Have the chimney cleaned professionally, clear out any leftover ashes from last year from disposal chute if you have one, fix cracked glass doors. 3. Get the garage into shape. Gather up summer items such as lawn chairs, umbrellas, garden tools, and beach toys, pack them securely...
