Now that the weather may be cooling off some, you may want to take a bike ride to burn some calories and enjoy the fresh air. The National Bike Registry estimates that one million bicycles are stolen each year in the U.S. and only a small percentage of them are ever recovered. The annual cost to American families is more than $200 million.    The following tips can help lower the risk of having your bike stolen: Lock your bike.  Unlocked bicycles are an open invitation for thieves. Whenever you are not riding your bike, it should be locked, even when it's in your garage. Don't skimp when buying a lock.  Most cable locks are easy to cut, so purchase the best lock you can afford. Lock your bike correctly.  Lock both wheels and the frame to a post, pole or bike rack. Register your bike wit...

Brevard college at it's current location started here in Brevard in 1934, but the following history from their web site is just another reason why you should not only look for a great education but a second home, retirement home, or a land purchase. Make Brevard NC your next Real Estate stop and I guarantee you will make it home as I did some 40 years ago. Brevard College was formed at its present location in 1934 through the merger of two Methodist colleges, Rutherford and Weaver, on a campus donated by the Brevard Institute. From the beginning, the purpose of all three schools had been to give young men and women in the mountains of western North Carolina an opportunity for an education, to help them make "not a mere ‘living,' but a ‘life.' " Our history begins in 1853 in Owl Hollow S...

A day in Brevard North Carolina and the surrounding area & Welcome to Brevard NC!    Brevard, North Carolina is full of activity as well as vacationers, summer home owners and visitors trying to escape the heat of the low county. Wonderful to see such anticipation as you see the smiles of the folks entering the Forest for a fun filled day of nature and free entertainment. I love my drive into work as the cool 60's degree mornings with the fresh smell of native flowers and trees fill your soul. Then as I drive by the entrance of the Pisgah national Forest every morning on my way to work at our office located in Straus Park, and see folks on bicycles, motorcycles, cars with inter tubes filled to almost exploding, kayaks and busloads of kids and families. The kids are so excited for the...

When we first meet people who are new to the Brevard area, there are two things they always comment about. One is how nice the people are and the other is how beautiful the area is. Of course, they're right on both counts. With over 250 wateralls, pristine hiking trails, and clear clean mountain rivers and lakes, there is natual beauty everywhere you look. And because Transylvania County is home to two State forests - DuPont and Gorges, and the Pisgah National forest, the area is naturally protected from ever being over developed. The Cradle of Forestry is a great place to learn more about the area's rich history of forest conservation. The Cradle of Forestry is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people achieve a better understanding of the area's ecology through education, ...

Recycling is a family project" OK, I have asked myself since I started some time back and to tell you the truth recycling really became a way of life rather than a haphazard way of getting rid of your garbage.
