Here in Carova, NC the tides are an important part of our daily like. For most coastal communities knowing the tides is helpful for people boating or fishing, here it is important for driving. Since getting anywhere commercial from even the closest house requires a 2 mile drive on the beach itself, it can be very advantageous to know when low tied is so you can drive on the smooth hard packed sand rather than the dry sugar sand that Carova is well known for.   So as a Public Service, I will be posting the tides weekly each Sunday. If you would like to get the tides delivered to you daily, you can follow me on Twitter or like myFacebook Fan Page.   Carova Weekly Tides: Sunday: Low/3:42AM High/9:49AM Low/4:07PM High/10:20PM Monday: Low/4:38AM High/10:40AM Low/4:56PM High/11:15PM Tuesday...

Taken from the October issue of "Wild & Free"   The North Beach is the last stand  for the wild horses.  They are as  far north as they can go.  70% of  the land they roam is privately  owned and subject to develop- ment.  If we are to preserve the  and, we must own it and place it  n permanent conservation   easements.      The Corolla Wild Horse Fund is pleased to announce the creation of the Freedom Fund.  This fund will be used to leverage grant dollars for land acquisition.      In addition, land owners can donate land and deduct the fair  market value from their taxes.      If you would like more information on how you can contribute  to the Freedom Fund or on land donation, please contact  CWHF Executive Director, Karen McCalpin, at 252-453-8002.

While out of town for the 2011 NCAR Inaugural event, I received a disturbing e-mail from Karen McCalpin of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. I have spoken with Karen about this, and she is adamant about sharing all the news to bring awareness to these wonderful creatures, not just the warm fuzzy news. Here is that email.  If you would like  to learn how you can help, please visit their website. On Tuesday, January 18, Wesley received a call from Currituck County Dispatch around 12:30 regarding a horse that was lying on its side in a yard at the end of Brandt Road. He was already up the beach and the mare passed away shortly after he arrived at the site. Because the mare had a significant puncture wound about 3 inches from her spine, the Sheriff’s Department was called. Wesley took the mare...

People who only come to visit Carova in the summer see our beaches as thick, fluffy and easy to get stuck in, but it is really only like that in the summer months. As the fall approaches, the loose "sugar sand" gets pulled out into the sand bars and the ruts don't become quite so deep. What this also does is expose the remains on an old maritime forest. Completely covered over during the summer these tree stumps can now stick out over two feet . The mere fact that these are covered over in the summer months give you an idea of just How deep the sand is and why it is so easy to get you vehicle stuck if you don't take the right precautions.

This is a fun question to try and explain. The truth is that there are many reasons why Route 12 stops short of the communities of Carova, NC. One of the main reasons is because in between the paved road and the first subdivision know as Ocean Beach is the Currituck National Estuarine Research Reserve. This land stretches for about a mile and covers over 700 acres. For those of you who have not had the pleaseure of walking this land and enjoy this Virtual Field Trip.   Currituck National Estuarine Research Reserve virtual field trip View more presentations from 4x4RE.

Have you ever wondered where all those Christmas trees go after Christmas? Think of all the trees that were cut down to be put on display in people’s living rooms for 3-4 weeks and then tossed on the curb for the trash collector. I never really gave it much thought, probably because when growing up we would get a tree that still had roots and dad would replant it along the property line. This is a GREAT way to give yourself a privacy fence although it may take a few years. :) When I got married and moved into my own house, we bought an artificial tree because my wife was worried about our cats & she felt that cutting down a live tree was wasteful.  But to get back to the original question, what does happen to all those once live trees after Christmas?  Well believe it or not, some fi...

Now that 2011 is in full swing, we can look pack at the numbers for 2010 and see how well the real estate market was for the 4-Wheel Drive beaches of Carova.  Although the percentages were not as high as I was expecting, we did see an increase in the number of sales bay about 6%. with 39 lots sold and 14 houses. I was predicting more, but I think a lot of December closings have gotten pushed into January. Almost half of the Sales were in the Subdivision of Carova Beach with the second most popular being Swan Beach, followed by Ocean Beach. To see the full list of the 4x4 properties sold, you can go to my 2010 Carova Sales page.

Here in Carova, NC one of the big past times is taking pictures of the Corolla Wild Horses.  They are very photogenic, and how often to you get to see wild horses roaming the beach.  This week, however, we got an extra special treat. We got a snow fall that actually accumulated and stayed on the ground giving us a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the horses in a new perspective. This picture was taken from a member of one of the local forums.

I have always made the stand that I am a resident FIRST and a Realtor second. The last thing that I want to see happen is for Carova to become a 4-wheel drive Whalehead. at the same time we have A LOT of undeveloped, privately owned lots, and I believe every lot owner has the right to build on their own land with in the limits of the law. What we need to do is to continue working on getting more lots turned into conservancy easements or donate them to the Wild Horse Fund. You could probably get more on the tax right off than you could on the open market.  I do see a time in the near future when the county puts a building moratorium up to stop all these 1/3 acre lots getting 6 bedroom septics and I think they'd be right to do so. In the meantime CALL ME. I have owners who want to sell,...
