Yesterday USAToday.com put out a great little article pointing out some of the great reasons of owning a second home on the Outer Banks, NC. "Planning has been very good, and compared to most beach towns, there is very limited development, with no high-rises," says Melanie Day, a broker for Brindley Beach Vacations and Sales in Duck, N.C. "There are some condos, but the vast majority are single-family homes." And of course what do the have pictured? But a family taking a walk through Ocean Beach in Carova. Many residents of Carova, especially those in the Subdiivisions of Swan Beach & Sea Gull, are preparing themselves once again for a fight to keep the 4-Wheel Drive beaches Commercial Free. Here is an e-mail that I received from the people at www.SaveOBX.com. they also have a petition that can be signed by any & all concerned. Commercial Development in the Off Road Area is back on the drawing board, as the company--Swan Beach Corolla, LLC--seeks to obtain a conditional zoning change from residential to commercial in Swan Beach. The proposal seeks to develop 37.57 acres into commercial use. The area would have an Inn with associated structures on the north end of Swan Beach with approximately 302 suites (270 in north, 32 in the south), a fishing pier at the southern end of Swan Beach, and...

Here's a great reason for living in Carova, NC. Without all the development and comercialization that you find elsewhere on the East Coast, you can get shots like this. It is easy getting a good scenic shot looking east at the ocean, but to be able to look west and not have your field of view cluttered with beach houses & condos is a rare thing indeed.

I get the question asked of me more than any other question by far, both on & off the road. Just driving up the 10 mile stretch of beach and back is no guarantee that you see the Corolla Wild horses. In fact I would give those odds about 20%. The horses are most often grazing, and since there is no grass growing at the shoreline, it is rare to see them out there. Most often you have to brave taking one of the ramps over the dune line and go exploring the back roads. Remember there are about 100 horses and 12,000 acres for them to roam. they do come out on the beach from time to time. I've been told that they will usually do this to get away from the flies, and are most likely to come out when the wind is blowing from the west. During the summer, the best chance of seeing them "on the be...

In the first part I posted about public reaction to to the thought of getting a Mid-Currituck Bridge. The realty thou is that public opinion may not matter. The Mid-Currituck Bridge has been in the plans now for well over two decades as a way to connect the mainland of Currituck County to the Currituck Outer Banks with out having to drive hours through Dare County to get there. Is it finally going to happen? No one can say for certainty. All we can do to for now is follow the news.   Here is the latest reports from the Daily Advance.    - The environmental impact statement for the bridge is expected to be released in the next couple of weeks - the final environmental impact statement is scheduled for release in the second quarter of this year. - A bridge toll ranging from $6 to $30 per ...

That is a question that is on a lot of people's minds who live live near or vacation on the Currituck Outer Banks. Many locals say that the Mid-Currituck Bridge is a pipe dream. that it will never happen and that they don't want it to happen. they believe that if it did, that Corolla would lose it's village feel and that Rte 12 will become more jamed on "turnover days" as vacations would very likely start using Corolla as their path to Duck. Yet almost just as many locals believe that Mid-Currituck Bridge would and even should be built. Their thoughts are that they want to have better access to medical facilities, that it will help their business grow, and maybe (as Corolla also tries to establish a charter school) help attract more year round residents and actually reduce the number of...

Some may call it the end of an era, others may say good riddance to an oceanfront eyesore.  Either was is was an awesome sight this past Saturday as a true Carova land mark has its last moments in the Sun. I never knew orange could be so vibrant. The picture just doesn't do it justice.
