One of the things I love most about the Triangle is there is always something to do outdoors.  We have unlimited natural resources in this area - there is plenty of hiking, biking, lakes, state parks, and trails.  Almost everyone in the area knows about Umstead Park, also known as the Park in the City, Falls Lake, and Lake Jordan.  However, residents are just discovering The American Tobacco Trail.  It's not quite complete yet but is expected to be completed in the next year.  The American Tobacco Trail is a 22 + mile trail system that extends from Durham County through Wake County and even into Chatham County.  I've included a link to colored maps recently published at the bottom of the post for your reference. The Trail starts in downtown Durham, at the site of the Durham Bulls Athlet...

I have clients visiting the Triangle Region on a regular basis trying to decide which town in the Triangle to live, work, and play.  That said, my clients always want to know a little bit more about the towns before making the big decision to relocate.  That said, here's some background on the city of Durham for your reference. Of the three major cities in the Triangle, Durham perhaps is the one that carries the most paradoxical images. The city has its origins in tobacco and textiles, yet today it's home to some of the most acclaimed medical institutions and high-tech businesses in the Triangle - indeed, the nation. The city was named for Dr. Bartlett Durham, who donated four acres of land for a train station in what is now downtown Durham. It took little time for Durham to become a boo...

In terms of the economic environment, the Durham county workforce increased 3.49% from 2005. In addition, the unemployment rate dropped from 4.7% last year to 3.9% in 2006. Housing sales were up in Durham by 4.3% in 2006. The current crop of sellers have their homes listed at an average of 6.35% per year above 2005 numbers. Summer Meadow closed the most amount of new homes. The average sales price of new construction is $255,000. Currently there is a 6 month supply of new homes in the county and five months of resale homes. The $150k-$199k price point had the most amount of closings year-to-date.Woodcroft close...

25 common misperceptions about Durham and the realities behind them Ready responses to misinformed comments and common misperceptions about Durham. The following common misperceptions and the realities behind them can be used to respond to negative word-of-mouth or water-cooler talk that undermines Durham and its assets in the perceptions of visitors and newcomers. 1) COMMON MISPERCEPTION: Durham has a poor self-image. A local publication, The Independent Weekly, recently asked it's readers to tell them what they love about Durham. Here are a few of the nearly 100 responses they received, many touching on similar strengths--diversity, friendliness, beauty, civic involvement. You can find the entirety at: http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A31991It's the brick and the kudzu. One a victim, the other a victor. Never in my life growing up on the West Coast have I seen a city so full of red and brown brick both subsisting and disappearing. It marvels me. The brick in Durham remains a poignant symbol in the history of the tobacco industry. I hear locals expressing a discontent for its gentrification. There seems there's no stopping it. One of my favorite things to do in Durham is ride my bike...
