A 33 foot long juvenile humpback whale washed up on the beach this week on the southern end of Hatteras Island. A necropsy is being performed by the Marine Mammal Stranding Network in conjunction with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore to determine the cause of death. The dead whale showed no signs of trauma but the tests should provide some idea of what caused the death. Afterward, the whale will be buried on the beach. The humpback whales are in the process of migrating south at this time of year from New England to the south Atlantic and it is not unusual to have one or two dead whales wash ashore every year somewhere on the Outer Banks. No that Hurricane Earl has come and gone, Hatteras Island can go back to focusing on a much bigger threat to their residents...The closure of it's beaches. This 2 part video is long but one worth watching to get some insight to what the locals of Hatteras Island fear more than anything that you may see on the Weather Channel.  I am all for being environmentally responsible, but watching this worries me about what could happen at my end of the beach some day if we are not diligent.

After all the hoopla surrounding the first major wind farm on the Outer Banks off the coast of Buxton and Frisco in the Pamlico Sound, Duke Energy has decided to pull out. The project was seen as way to harness the enormous amount of wind energy from the Outer Banks to help power Hatteras Island. The project was also going to provide a springboard to larger wind farms that could power several counties in Eastern North Carolina. The project was only a few months of away from getting started when Duke Energy decided that the Pamlico Sound was just to shallow for the barges need to transport the equipment out the build site. Duke Energy did learn from their studies that the real potential for off shore wind farms is off the coast in the Atlantic Ocean. Duke is hopeful to get plans for that...

Like much of the Outer Banks, Hatteras Island has been hit by its share of foreclosures. Currently we find 8 bank owned homes throughout Hatteras. The homes range in price from $196,900 to $875,900. Amazingly the homes range from a 3 bedroom home in Salvo to an 8 bedroom oceanfront home in Rodanthe. Many of the bank owned homes only need minor work before they are move in or rental ready. If you are looking for an excellent opportunity on a Hatteras Island home, I recommend investigating the available Outer Banks foreclosures.
