“The Gathering Place” derives its name from a time honored tradition of shared good times with family and friends from far and near. Here you’ll find a warm and welcoming atmosphere of casual good taste blended with family style, familiar furnishings, cozy comforters and fireside chairs; a place where shirts and shoes are strictly optional, but smiles are guaranteed. The house is large, open and airy, with lots of windows to let in the sunlight and show off the lake view. And while one might think you’d have to sacrifice personal space to accommodate as many as 12 guests or more, there’s ample room for all with 6 bedrooms and 5 full baths, 2 kitchens & 2 living rooms. Located on the main level, you’ll find a large Master suite with its own TV and 3 guest bedrooms & baths. The large open...

Fires Creek is a recreational area in Hayesville, NC.  To get there From Hayesville, go 5 miles on US 64W.  Turn right on NC 175 for 2.5 miles, left on SR 1344 for two miles.  Fires Creek water is often very cold, therefore, you may want to take a swim during a hot summer day.  What makes this recreational area fun for Hayesville residents is the fast flowing stream that allows rafts to traverse down it.  Often my sons take their friends to splash down the stream on a mini-white water rafting adventure, while I watch them from on top of a walking bridge.  At the bottom of the short rafting ride is a beautiful water fall.  Again, the kids love to explore this area and stand under the rushing waters.  At the other end of the falls is a deep water hole.  It is fun to jump off the big rocks...

Tom and I would like to take time to express our sincerest appreciation to Carol & Lee Barbour. We were fortunate enough to see a property for sale on another realtor’s website that we were very interested in.  Tom had talked with Carol about some other properties and was very impressed with her professionalism.   So we called Carol about the property and immediately she jumped into action.  I’m certain without her prompt attention we might not have gotten this property.  We are very grateful we got The Mountain Living Team as our Realtor. She made a very tense time much easier.  She was committed to making our dream come true.  Her professionalism is something you don’t see often these days.  She handled the sale, while we were 500 miles away, and kept us informed every step of the way...

The Clay County Progress newspaper presents the annual Hayesville Christmas Parade. The Parade will kick off the holiday season in grand style when it gets under way on the Hayesville Town Square at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10.  This year’s theme is “Celebrating Clay County’s Heritage,” in commemoration of the county’s 150th anniversary. Leading the parade this year as its grand marshals are members of VFW Post 6812 and the George Lee American Legion Post and Auxiliary. Old Shooting Creek Baptist Church’s youth tell the crowd that Jesus is the mainreason we celebrate Christmas. They won second place in the nonprofit division in 2010. If you’re planning to participate here’s what to do:• Parade participants should meet at the Hayesville High School parking lot, entering from the Myer’s Chap...

PUNKIN CHUNKIN FESTIVAL IN CLAY COUNTY NC OCTOBER 21 - 23, 2011 If you’re looking for something fun and unusual to do one weekend in October, then perhaps you should head to the mountains and plan to attend the Annual Punkin’ Chunkin’ Festival in Clay County, North Carolina.   Sponsored by the Clay County NC Chamber of Commerce, this three-day event will feature live music and entertainment, mountain craft vendors, food (of course), a Chili Cook-Off, an Anything Punkin’ Bake-off and, needless to say, lots of chunkin’ of the punkins!!! So, exactly WHAT IS Punkin’ Chunkin’ you ask??  It started in 1986 when a group of men in a Delaware blacksmith shop began to argue about who could throw something the farthest.  The challenge was on and the men began to create their machines.  In November...

Machaceh Rescue Farm in Hayesville, NC is a nonprofit family based ministry that aids in the help and care of abused, neglected or unwanted animals. I found the Rescue Farm while previewing a home over in Clay County, NC and passed this great painted barn and just had to stop and take a photo of it.  That’s when I met Michelle Updike and she invite me in for a tour and introduced me to some of the animals there. Michelle’s passion for these animals is contagious. As she says “we fight and speak on the behalf of the animal because they have no voice to do so.” Machaceh is a Hebrew word meaning refuge, shelter from danger so that seems to be the perfect name for this wonderful ministry.   The Machaceh Rescue Farm supplies emergency medical and surgical care to the many animals in need. Hayesville, NC has a little of the "big city" going for it even out in the country. Bet you didn't know we had our very own Statue of Liberty here in the western North Carolina mountains. On your way down to the new Clay County Courthouse you'll get to see our country version of Lady Liberty watching over the fields. Just another sight you'll see as you drive along the countryside and another reason we love living here!

Serious outdoors lovers take note: The Fires Creek area in Hayesville North Carolina and tucked away in the extreme southwest corner of North Carolina amid some of the most remote and pristine scenery in the eastern United States-offers varied opportunities for superb interaction with the natural world.               Its more than 21,000 acres, which shelter abundant flora and fauna, are ideal for hiking, backpacking, camping, horseback riding, hunting, and fishing. Leatherwood Falls is about 25 feet high and makes a pleasant picnic spot. In addition to the usual southern Appalachian hardwoods, six kinds of pine, hemlock, mountain laurel and rhododendron, ferns, and a dazzling array of wildflower species thrive here.               The Rim Trail, a roughly 26-mile loop, surrounds the Fir...

Okay just for fun. My son came home with a sheet of math problems the other night and he asked for some help. It was beginning algebra so I said sure no problem. As I started to work the problem he told me I was doing it wrong. I insisted I was not that he was being taught wrong.  I took one of the problems to a retired teacher, and many friends about my age (in their 40's), and we all came up with the same answer. We called a meeting with the teacher about the math, who had the nerve to say we must not have attended very good schools when we both attended excellent schools. My wife's being the largest and oldest private school in the south east.  So here we go how would you answer this problem? You may show your work but don't tell why you chose to do the problem that way. Tomorrow I w...
