Wow - my hometown - Hickory NC hits the big time tonight on the History Channel's show Modern Marvels - 9pm.. Well, I suppose it would be nice to be recognized for something other than - underwear... more specifically socks - which seems a little better..  Hickory has long been known for it's furniture and hosiery manufacturing and many of these companies have survived by embracing technology and new approaches.  Our local Catawba Valley Community College has a Hosiery Technology center which will be featured tonight on Modern Marvels.. They wanted to see the latest technology for socks and panythose. The center tests durability as well as anti-microbial factors. Wow - now we have socks that fight bacteria growth - eh, toe jam??  This center does testing for companies like Land's End, N...

I have lived in Hickory for a few years now and I think it would have been helpful if someone had explained how the road structure of this town was set up. Basically the City was divided into 4 quarters, NE, NW,SE,SW Therfore you should be able to figure out what part of Hickory you are going to by the last two letters. Route 127 runs north south and seperates east west, and main ave in Downtown Hickory pretty much separates north south. Once you realize how that is set then things will make alot more sense to you. I will say that having a GPS has made things much easier though.

Personally, I think Lake Hickory is a hidden treasure.  It is a beautiful lake, even though when looking at a map it just looks like a wide spot in the Catawba River.   When you are looking at it from one of the many subdivisions surrounding it, the views are astounding.   The building on Lake Hickory looks more sparse than it's neighboring Lake Norman because of the foilage and cliffsides to the lake.  Two major bridges cross Lake Hickory, Highway 321 and Highway 127.  The best thing about living off the 321 route is easy access to Blowing Rock or Boone going north, or Morganton and Asheville going west.  The lake has 105 miles of shoreline and covers 4,223 acres.  It is controlled by Duke Energy and has five public access areas.  If you are visiting the "furniture capital" of North Ca...
