Speechless Sunday in the western NC mountains and just over the NC/GA state line we came across this little guy - hey, don’t call him shorty! Well, whatever his name was he was the cutest and curious little horse. I guess he could still see us with all that mane because he kept following us back and forth the fence line. There are some great Farms and Horse Properties here in the mountains!   For more information about Buying, Selling and Living in Western NC mountains contact Lee & Carol Barbour ~ The Mountain Living Team  www.MurphyMountainLiving.com Licensed and Serving the western NC, northeast GA and east TN Mountains

This Sunday on April 22, 2012 we celebrate the 42nd Anniversary of Earth Day! The following statistics are eye-opening, to say the least how just little changes can impact our world. If everyone went vegetarian just for one day, the U.S. would save:● 100 billion gallons of water, enough to supply all the homes in New England for almost 4 months● 1.5 billion pounds of crops otherwise fed to livestock, enough to feed the state of New Mexico for more than a year● 70 million gallons of gas--enough to fuel all the cars of Canada and Mexico combined with plenty to spare● 3 million acres of land, an area more than twice the size of Delaware● 33 tons of antibioticsIf everyone went vegetarian just for one day, the U.S. would prevent:● Greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 1.2 million tons of CO2...

When is Dogwood Winter in Murphy, NC?  We had some chilly temperatures and frost warnings to welcome us this morning. Old-timers in the Appalachians know there are several named "winters" following winter, and Dogwood and Blackberry Winter are perhaps the best known. It’s a term used by Southerners to describe a period of cold weather that coincides with the blooming of the local dogwoods and blackberries, usually occurring in the mid April to May months. The dogwoods are all bloomed out and the blackberries are soon to follow. With the possibility of frost happening during Dogwood and Blackberry winters, many Southerners here in Murphy, NC wait until after these winters have passed to plant tender vegetables and annuals. The Native Americans also watched for the dogwood blooms as the si...

Celebrate Golfer’s Day in the western NC Mountains! Some avid golfers might suggest that any and every day is Golfer's Day. But on April 10th, it's official. The only question is, does this day honor the golfer, the sport, or the weather? Well, it's a little of each. Golfer's Day is an opportunity to be thankful that someone invented this addicting, yet relaxing hobby. Also referred to as "Golf Day", there is only one proper way to enjoy this day. And, that's out on the golf course - of course.  When Golfer's Day falls on a weekday - which it is, it is even more special. That means you now have an excuse to take a day off of work and go play a round … or two. Regardless of your score today, you know that even a bad day on the greens, is better than a good day at work.  For more informat...

Murphy, NC makes the Best American Historical Towns you’ve never heard of List!  Who knew there was a Best American Towns You’ve Never Heard Of list, but there is and our lovely Cherokee County, NC city of Murphy is on it! Here is what they had to say about Murphy, NC but there is so much more... Over the course of the early 19th century, land-hungry American settlers came head to head with Native American tribes. Native Americans were either violently pushed out of their homes or simply mistreated to the point of defeat; some settlers stole their livestock and burned their towns. In 1838, the U.S. government ordered the Native Americans to move, then set 7,000 soldiers to forcibly remove Cherokee Indians from their homes. Thousands of Cherokees were forced to move out West, traveling a...

Attracting Hummingbirds to your home in Murphy, NCEveryone loves seeing these beauties jet back and forth from tree to feeder. Here are a few great ways to attract hummingbirds for plenty of entertainment ... Grow late blooming nectar sources. Tubular-shape blooms in bright red or orange are ones they really love like Salvia, Bee Balm, Hyssop and Butterfly Weed. A little place to rest. I know it seems like they never stop moving, but while they do like to dart back and forth, they do rest. They prefer perching on hidden branches, particularly evergreens.Add some moving water. Hummingbirds drink and bathe on the fly as they dart in and out of oscillating sprinklers. They also love birdbaths and misters - like all the other birds and butterflies do too. Serve some fast food.  Sugar water i...

Here in Murphy, NC the story goes that once a young Cherokee Indian brave was out hunting with his dog and a flash flood came upon them and separated them. Later, when the young brave went back looking for his dog he came upon him high up in a tree, safely hanging on up in the branches. So this area was then called Hanging Dog. Cherokee County, NC has roads, communities, bike trails, campgrounds and many other locations named after Hanging Dog. Many of the communities, lakes and rivers are named after Cherokee Indian names. see what the word Nantahala means HERE  If you're planning on visiting the Murphy, NC area we'd be happy to show you around all the Cherokee, Clay and the surrounding counties have to offer you. Okay Murphy, NC now is the time to get your potatoes ready for planting! Earlier this week we had a lot of rain, but the sun has been shining bright and everything is starting to feel like spring again. Yes, it's time to start thinking about your gardens and planting your potatoes. So here is a great little tip for getting started... Instead of buying those really expensive seed potatoes, just pick up a 5 pound bag of organic potatoes. We've just ordered some from the  Co-Op we belong to - one bag to eat and the other to plant. Put your bag in a cabinet for a couple weeks and "forget" about them.  Let them sprout and, when it is time to plant, just cut them into two or three sections, leaving a good sprout on each section. Put them on the ground, sprout up, and cover them carefully with...

I live on the West coast and owned property in Tennessee that I desperately needed to sell. My husband had just passed away and this became imperative for me to accomplish. The house had been empty for over 3 years, and no work had been done on it. It was rural, had a well, etc. and I had no idea how/who to contact about selling it. I went online, saw Carol and Lee’s ad for the Mountain Living Team, and contacted them. Immediately I was aware that I had made an outstanding choice, as throughout the process of getting the information they needed to them, assisting me with hiring someone to “clean up” the place and guiding me through the escrow procedures, I felt cared about personally, not just a “customer” who needed to sell a property. Their attention to my needs, all the details invol...

Saint Patrick's Day is in honor of the Patron Saint of Ireland, who brought Christianity to the Emerald Isles, as Ireland is known, and the Irish people in the 400's AD. It is truly a day of celebrating Irish history, ancestry, traditions and customs. And as the saying goes everyone is a little Irish on Saint Patrick's Day.Erin Go Braugh is perhaps the most common Irish term you will hear. It means "Ireland Forever"  Did You Know? Over 34 million Americans are of Irish descent. That's almost nine times the population of Ireland!  Traditional Irish Stew Recipe    2 pounds lamb shoulder, cubed 8 medium potatoes, sliced, unpeeled 3 onions, sliced 2 carrots, peeled, sliced into wheels 2 tablespoons chopped, fresh parsley 1 tablespoon chopped, thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1 Bay Leaf 2 cup...

Don’t text and drive or your car might end up looking like this!Thankfully there was no one hurt other than this blue convertible mustang this teenager was driving. They had it out on the road with this sign in it for a few days to give a little advice and warning to all the other drivers passing by. No matter if you’re driving on the flat Florida roads or the curving scenic western NC mountain roads - Don’t Text and Drive!
