  This year is the 122nd anniversary of the Soldiers Reunion in Newton. Sponsored by the Newton Merchants Association and American Legion Post 16, the week-long celebration is believed to be the longest-running patriotic celebration not based on a holiday in the entire country. This year’s theme is “Saluting Our Heroes.” Sunday August 14, 2011 Reunion Week begins with a “Cruisin’ and Car Show” on  in downtown Newton.     The Green Room Summer Shakespeare Theatre Institute is a week-long day camp the week of July 18-23, 2011. Students in all grades explore the exciting world of William Shakespeare and his times, and then they participate in a production of one of his plays.     The Newton Parks and Recreation Department will offer “Water Aerobics” on Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning July 11 through August 3, 2011 for those ages 16 and older. Newton NC TAKE A KID FISHING DAY Saturday June 18, 2011 If you and your children love to fish, this event is for you. The 2011 Take-A-Kid Fishing Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Herman’s Fish Lake in Newton. The event is open to all children ages 3–17. Any child age 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult to be eligible to participate. Participants must bring their own rod and reel. Registration begins Wednesday, June 1 at the Newton Recreation Center or at One-On Bait & Tackle.
