In business school, you're not taught to link to your competitors. Why would you? After all, you want your website visitors to stay on your website, not go right into the hands of your competitors. And yet, that's exactly what Yahoo did at its start. Yahoo, at its core, was a great directory of reputable links. When it came to users searching for information, though, Yahoo's results weren't complete. You couldn't find the "needle in the haystack," as Yahoo early employee Tim Brady describes in Founders at Work. Did Yahoo just leave it at that? No. At the end of a search results page, they included links to Internet company (and competitor) Excite - more specifically, a pre-queried page on Excite so that the user had just one click to view more results in case the original Yahoo search d...

If you are new to Active Rain be aware you may get an unexpected  phone call from one of the wonderful staff members of activerain. It's okay with us because Aaron was such a pleasure to talk to and very helpful too!! We did the usual chit chat and found out the weather was indeed nicer in Sunset Beach, North Carolina at 75 degrees as opposed to the snow in the state of Washington where Aaron resides. Should we call it activesnow for the moment?? So the best part of the conversation was......  THE TRIAL MEMBERSHIP AS A RAINMAKER FOR ONLY $1.00 for the FIRST MONTH !!   This was a glorious day in Southport NC.  My Grandchildren Clay and Jonah are feeding the Gulls.  This is on the waterfront in Southport in  Waterfront Park.  These two young men, are my grandsons, Clay Harper Tuttle and Jonah Foster Gouger. It was a special day.  It was the 90th Birthday for my Mother In Law, Margaret Taylor Harper.  WE had  many friends and family to join us in the celebration  of her birthay. We are blessed with a wonderful  family. Thanks, Ginger Harper

The sun was out and the heat index was high.  Warnings of afternoon thunderstorms were all over the news this morning but the tourist were out in full force on the beach this afternoon.  I had to work in the Sunset Beach Island office this afternoon.  I could see the thunderclouds building at a distance behind my house but when the weatherman interrupted about 12:30 to say the storm had hit  Whiteville, NC, I decided to leave early for work.  Glad I did; the sky unzipped; the water sheeted down, the thunder roared and the lightening flashed.  Of course, all bedlam broke loose on the beach as the storms rolled in.  Umbrellas were jerked down; coolers, blankets, and screaming kids were quickly grabbed and all made a dash for the cars...then they all sat at the drawbridge waiting to cross....

Well, there was one for 1.7 million dollars...that was the news I relayed to the nice ladies from Maryland who walked into our island office this afternoon.  Anne said that this was their first visit to the Carolina Beaches and they had fallen in love with Sunset Beach.  Anne and her sister are a few years from retirement and they had heard how bad the market is and they were looking for a bargain.  I explained it was easy to do a search for a short sale, bank owned, foreclosure, possible short sale so we chatted.  One sister was ready to buy while the other thought they might need to wait...the market might continue to decline.  The shock on their face was priceless when the Brunswick County MLS only returned one property!  Of course, they thought I had made a mistake; they didn't have...

Finally, the last two segments are in place connecting Sunset Beach mainland and Sunset Beach Island.  Completion date is to be early fall.  A special celebration is planned and we are asking anyone with old pictures of their family taken while vacationing at Sunset Beach to please share.  Originally, these barrier islands were nothing but sand.  Locals used them for fishing and hunting.  Mr. Odell Williamson sold some of the first lots on Ocean Isle Beach for $500 and his buddies thought he had lost his marble.  My husband's cousin told his daddy he was going to buy a few lots and his daddy thought he was crazy.  Believe it or not, he still owns those lots on the first street.

No one lives on Bird Island but there is a mailbox erected on this little strip of sand.  This uninhabited island rests between Sunset Beach and the Carolinas' state line.  Twenty-five years ago, when my children were little, my relatives and friends would all pack up picnic baskets full of food and off we would go to Bird Island.  It is a beautiful spot with the intracoastal waterway on one side and the pounding ocean on the other side.  Except for a few locals (had to have a boat), very few people knew about this lovely little island that sloped gently into the waterway.  Kids would play all day while the adults relaxed in the sun.  Until several years ago, walkers could cross from the Southern end of Sunset Beach and walk across during low tide...but you really had to watch the tides...

Not everyone wants to spend $200,000 and up for a site built home nor do all buyers want to live on a golf course thus I am focusing on Wyndfall in Sunset Beach, NC.  Properties are very affordable considering how close to Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle Beach.  Homeowners in this small but lovely community pay less than $400 per year homeowners' fees primarily because common amenities that drive up costs are not there.  There are no gates to maintain nor security guards to pay.  The community has been built out and there are usually only a handful of properties for sale.  There are no condos nor any townhouses, just site built homes.  Prices range from low !00,000s to less than $200,000.  For many residents, these are second vacation homes so yards are smaller than some communities; theref...

I worked out on Sunset Beach, NC today...part of the time in the Coldwell Banker Sloane office and a few hours actually on the beach.  After work, I walked out on the beach...it was gorgeous but a little chilly unless you could find a vacant dune.  As I was taking pictures, kids were coming up wanting their pictures taken...it was so much fun.  I always get their parents permission and email them home so they can print them.  Of course, I ask them to remember me if anyone is looking for a property later in the year, and I give them a card.  I probably gave out 30 cards on the beach today. No costs involved except time.  I told parents I don't post individual pictures on the internet except to send to them.  I wish I could but it might not be safe but some of the kids were real "Hams". Years ago, a local developer owned some acreage on the ICW, and decided to name this new development Seaside Station.  Lots were cheap, building codes less stringent, and the community allowed mobile homes.  Lots had to perk (test to be sure septic tank could be installed safely) and wells had to be found.  The beach area looked like old beaches.  In fact, some areas had residents who had vacationed in the family homes since the early 40's.  There were 100s of lots and mobile homes.  The community had a property owners association that had very few restrictions, mainly no junk trailers and homes had to be underpinned.  The factor that made Seaside Station so popular was its location directly on the intracoastal waterway.  It was affordable for the average family to have a little place a...
