Located at 182 Central Ave., Dover New Hampshire, the Woodman institute studies and lectures on local area history.  Here you can find who built New Hampshire, marvel at New Hampshire history, and experience the finest display of natural history and geology in the New Hampshire area. Originally built in 1818, the three story brick home was the residence of Annie and Charles Woodman.  Together they shared the home with lawyer, Daniel Christie.  When Annie Woodman passed in 1915, she left a trust of $100,000 to create a Dover institution. Today, the Woodman Institute Museum highlights artifact, minerals, fire and police memorabilia, musical instruments, and china and pottery throughout five different locations.  The Woodman home displays rocks, minerals, fossils and Indian artifact.  The...

Looking for a a great place to take in scenic views of New Hampshire's Seacoast? Check out the Garrison HIll Tower, located just off Central Ave. in Dover New Hampshire.  The tower, standing at 298 feet gives visitors scenic views of New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts.  On a good, clear day, visitors can get views from Mt. Washington, all the way to Boston.   Looking back in history.   The hill has had structures built on it, dating back as far as 1880.  It is said that native Americans built a wooden tower there to observe the land.  The city of Dover purchased the hill and the land in 1888 when a more modern tower was built.  By 1913 a small ski slope had been constructed for the local community to enjoy.  By 1970 the tower had been worn with wear and tear, and had to fenced off ...

In May of 1998, the Dover Police Mounted Patrol began its deployment in our downtown area. The goal with this program was twofold. First, the primary goal was to increase the Police Department's sense of presence in the downtown area and secondly, they hoped to promote a positive image and enhance personal communication with members of the public. The Dover Police Mounted Patrol relies on volunteers to accomplish a number of tasks from stable management to horse exercising.  Some volunteers have extensive equestrian backgrounds, while others have none, but have been willing to "learn on the job". Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, and have parental permission if under 18. Experience with horses is not a requirement, but a willingness to work with and around our horses is. Meet...

Well, it's been a long while since I've been asked to do one of these.  I have to admit, I'm not a juge fan of the MEME.  But, I'll be a good sport and play.  I was tagged recently by Sharon Tara, and asked to do a photo MEME.  So, here goes! Here are the rules: 1) Type out all the Questions below and answer them with a picture. 2) Tag 5 people and spread the love out. That is it. Age at my next Birthday -      Favorite movie or tv character - Favorite food - Favorite sports team - Of course!  For those of you that know me and read my blogs! Place I would most like to visit - I've been a lot of places, Vegas just happens to be one I've never been to! Bad habit -  some might say I drink way too much coffee! So, enough about me, my past, and my habits.  It's time to pass along the fun to ...

Part 3 in a weekly blog series of Why I love Dover New Hampshire, this week I'm highlighting Dover New Hampshire's Ice arena.  The arena is a big part of my families life, and a big part of many of the hockey families in the area also.                Public skating sessions are one of our main attractions at Dover Arena. Skating provides great exercise and an opportunity to get out of the house - plus, it's not like exercising at the gym... skating is fun! Lace-em up and come join the others. Get on the ice and get ready for a great experience. The rink offers both Adult and Youth Ice Hockey programs and leagues. Whether you are a beginning skater looking to play on a team in an instructional league or an experienced ice hockey player looking to get out and play with others of a similar...

Part 2, Reason #7 in a new series I decided to launch last week.  This week I am highlighting two of the towns great assets.  The Dover indoor pool and the Jenny Thompson outdoor pool. The Dover Indoor Pool is a 25-yard 6-lane pool located in downtown Dover off of Henry Law Avenue.  With an average water temperature of 81 degrees, the Indoor Pool is used for a wide range of activities including lap swim, therapy swim, lessons, competitive swimming, scuba classes, birthday parties and aqua-aerobics.  The dive well, which features a 1-meter diving board, is used primarily for diving instruction and recreational swimming, including treading water, water jogging and deep water swim instruction.               The Jenny Thompson Outdoor Pool is a 50-meter competition pool located on Portland...

The city of Dover has a long and colorful history spanning nearly four centuries. Its earliest days as a colonial seaport led to a successful shipbuilding industry in the 1700s, and it flourished in the 19th century as the nation's leading manufacturer of cotton goods. The development of a brick industry spanned decades of successful mill operations through the middle of the 20th century. Dover's renaissance as a thriving, competitive community continues today. Reason #12; Dover New Hampshire's childrens museum The Children's Museum operates exclusively for charitable purposes and serves as an educational resource for schools, families and communities. The museum strives to support the diverse population of the region, to provide learning opportunities for all children, and to enrich ...

Although the real estate market was tough in 2008 as you will see below, 288 homes sold in Dover.  People still have to move and homes still do sell regardless of the market.  With that said, here is A Little Perspective on the Real Estate Market: •  More than 1000 banks closed in 1930 (three years before the FDIC was created) BUT Only 14 banks have been taken over in 2008, •  There are 76 million households in the US that own their home--24 million of these homes are owned free and clear, •  There are 52 million homes with mortgages in the US;  97.2% of these are not in foreclosure AND 93.8% of these homes are current on their payments. Unfortunately... •  Over 20% of people with a mortgage owe more than their home is worth •  40% of all homes in foreclosure are non-owner occupied (inv...

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist noted in October that, "A trend away from subprime mortgages to FHA loans, which often carry much lower interest rates, is a positive development for consumers and the house market going forward.  Still, it will take some time for the change to yield a measurably higher closed sales volume in the aftermath of the subprime collapse.  In the near term, we expect home sales to remain fairly stable."  As real estate markets are local, here's what happened in the Dover market in October:    30 homes sold in Dover in October: - 22 single family homes, -   7 condos, and -   1 mobile homes.   Year-to-date, 254 homes have sold in Dover, NH: -165 single family homes -  79 condos, and -  10 mobile homes  In addition, 24 Dover homes are pending with active contrac...
