I Don't Care Who You Are, This Will Make You Cry...We Let A Stranger In Our House...And A Friend Into Our Hearts In early July 2011, I admit, we did something most people would consider a very foolish thing. We let a total stranger in our house. It was a Sunday morning and my Chris and I were about to pull out of the driveway on our way to find breakfast at a yet to be determined restaurant, when I noticed a car was pulling over to the side of the road opposite our driveway. I asked Chris to roll down her window as I expected the solitary gentleman in that car might have a question or perhaps need directions. "Do you live here?" the fortyfive-ish stranger asked, "Yes we do," Chris replied. "This is the house where I grew up," he said. "Could I visit for a minute. I won't take much of yo...

A Prayer For Our Fallen Soldiers On the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, an armistice, or "cease fire" was declared between the Allied nations and Germany, ending hostilities in the "Great War," later known as World War I. Seven months later, the war officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919, but the "war to end all wars" was already over. By Presidential proclamation in November 1919,Armistice Day was declared by President Wilson to be observed on November 11th to reflect on the heroism of those who died in service to our country during the bloodiest war to date. In 1921, Congress approved the establishment of a Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.. A Congressional Act in 1938 made...

When Its Time To Leave The House...You Really Must Go For most of the summer, we have been landlords for two families of House Wrens who have occupied one of the two birdhouses we have installed at the top of fence posts in our back yard. Both of these bird houses are designed for Bluebirds, but that hasn't deterred occupancy by House Wrens each year since we put them up. House Wrens have the largest range of any songbird in the Western Hemisphere, from Canada all the way to the tip of South America. Weighing in at a whopping 0.4 ounces, they are tiny. Their color is a nondescript, rather plain brown. What sets them apart from other bird species, is their colorful, bubbly and rather lengthy song. The male arrives in early June and selects one of the birdhouses and proceeds to sing his v...

Wordless Wednesday...Wayward WildlifeWhen you leave your doors open, you just never know who might drop in. Coincidence? I think not... This little guy was sure the bag of birdseed behind him was "Self-Serve." This female cardinal tried out a number of perches in our garage, but wasn't happy with the accomodations. She squawked the whole time and eventually left...in a huff. You might remember this late night visitor from a video blog a while ago. Alright, I really was just kidding, but I am trying to find some humor in this precipitation that has come back around after four consecutive days of good weather. Almost began to seem like a normal Spring/Summer for a bit. Now that the rain is back, I guess I'm feeling like these guys. This photo seems to need a caption. Have You Seen Clouds Like These?Last night my Chris and I went out to buy lottery tickets, our twice weekly contribution to our retirement fund Ha ha. When we were backing out of the local Irving station, Chris noticed some beautiful color in the clouds to our East, and suggested we go a little North, to a grass landing strip on Post Road and see what the sunset might look like up there. When we got up by the golf course, it became apparent that we needed to get out and take some pictures. There was a cloud bank towards the West. The sun was below the top of the cloud bank, and the exact meteorological or astronomical cause of this phenomena, I do not know, but the edge of the cloud bank was defined by a very fine line of bright orange. Beautiful and out of the ordinary, we felt so very...
Sink, Swim Or Float In A Boat...It's All A Matter Of SurvivalWell, it was finally time to open the pool over this past week, and we had some extremely windy days. The Oceanside Walking Path in Little Boar's Head...North Hampton NH Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH, the subject of yesterday's post is situated in the Historic District known as Little Boar's Head. Little Boar's Head was registered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 and is basically North Hampton's approximately one and a half mile coast. In addition to its rich history, Little Boar's Head is known as a who's who for well-known summer vacationers and permanent residents as well throughout the years. A walking path has been constructed beginning at the fish houses at the North end of North Hampton Beach and follows the shoreline along Ocean Boulevard, offering spectacular ocean views along the way. These photos were taken on a sunrise stroll along this walking path. ...
A Glimpse Into Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH - Part One One of my favorite places to visit on the Seacoast is Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH. Located at 10 Willow Avenue off scenic Route 1A (Ocean Boulevard), Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH is the ornamental garden Massachusetts Governor Alvan T. Fuller created for his wife, Viola, at their summer estate, Runnymede-by-the-Sea. This 2 1/2 acre property is a true turn-of-the-century estate garden. Although Runnymede was dismantled in 1961 per the wishes of Alvan, the ornamental gardens remain. Fuller commissioned the design and construction of these famous ornamental gardens in the 1920's under the direction of award winning landscape architect Arthur Shurtleff. Today, maintenance of the estate gardens is done under the auspi...
