In 2008, there were 3.8 million multigenerational households in the United States.    According to the United States Department of Commerce's Census Bureau, multigenerational households are defined as households that consist of "three or more generations of parents and their families" living in the same house.  Multigenerational homes are often referred to as a"mother/daughter home" and/or an "in-law suite", basically both have the same meaning...keeping the house "All in the Family". There's no doubt that many varieties of multigenerational homes exist but the most common are families which consist of grown children, grandparents and grandchildren all living under the same roof: the homeowner, his/her children and grandchildren; or the homeowner, his/her children and his/her own parent...

I am singing in the rain today!!  Today I have earned Active Rain's #1 Ranking in Fairfield, New Jersey!  I set a goal for myself here on AR albeit a small goal but one that I set and I accomplished. Everyday I log on to Active Rain and my Rank in Fairfield New Jersey has always been #2 and today after posting my last comment I clicked on my home page and there it was RANK IN FAIRFIELD: 1 (Featured!).  It's nothing compared to the top AR bloggers and I know I still have a lot to learn.  As you can see my points are only 22,012, have only written 44 blog posts with two subscribers and my posts have never been featured but I did set my goal to become #1 in Fairfield, New Jersey Active Rain's ranking and that goal I can happily say that I've accomplished today.  Staying #1 will be the ulti...

Drunk driving hit home this weekend in Fairfield.  Chills went up my spine Saturday morning when I learned a Fairfield home on Hollywood Avenue (the same Fairfield home my cousins were interested in back in March of 2008) was struck by a vehicle which hit the home's gas meter and ignited a fire that caused extensive damage to the home.  FORTUNATELY, the three occupants of the home nor the driver of the vehicle were injured during this horrible accident.      It took approximately 1½ hours for The Fairfield Fire Department, along with firefighters from both West Caldwell and North Caldwell to extinguish the flames.   From what I understand the driver of the vehicle was charged with DWI and arrested by the Fairfield Police Department.    This tragedy really hit home when I thought that i...

Did you know that good communities begin with their school system?  Did you know that your community's school system plays a major role in the value of your property? What do you think is the first question a family moving with children asks their agent...."What are the schools like?"  Even buyers who may not have children today but have future plans of raising a family ask their agent...."What are the schools like?" Unfortuntately if the school system is compromised, not only does the school suffer but the community suffers as well.  As a result, house values in that community may start to decline.       Just the other day I voted for Fairfield's Adlai E. Stevenson Elementary School to win $20,000 in the "America's Favorite School" online contest.   Every day committed teachers, parent...

Due to severe nut allergies and the dangers involved to children with nut allergies, Fairfield Public Schools are keeping nuts out of their schools.  (Now if you ask me I still see plenty of nuts running around but, that's just my own opinion).  At the Fairfield Board of Education's meeting on August 25, 2009, Dr. Mary Kildow, Superintendent of Schools, explained that allergic reactions can be a life-threatening situation for children who are afflicted. Those who are severely sensitive can react even by simply touching nut products or their residues. For those residents who did not attend the August 25, 2009 meeting did not know that such a policy was even being considered nor did many know that it was in effect until an article was published by our local newspaper, The Progress on Augu...

As a follow up to one of my recent posts regarding the Fairfield Police Department school safety meeting at the Fairfield HSA's February meeting, a School Safety & Security Committee has now been formed and the first meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Center at 376 Hollywood Avenue, Fairfield.  While they are taking the lead with starting this Committee, they strongly need the parents and the teachers assistance and cooperation.   They are seeking our assistance and participation to complete the "Team" (Parents, Teachers and Public Safety) that instructs the children in this community about School Safety and Security such as school Lock Down, Fire Drills and Evacuation Plans.  One of the primary goals of the Police Department is the communica...

Come share the joy of the season with my family and neighborhood friends as Mayor James Gasparini kicks off the Fairfield holiday season with the lighting of the Fairfield Town Tree on Sunday, December 7th at the Fairfield Recreation Complex on Hollywood Avenue. Its such a delight to listen to the Fairfield Busy Hands program four year old classes singing the holiday songs.  I remember four years ago when my oldest son's class performed at the tree lighting (oh wait..that's right..he was the ONLY one crying and my husband had to take him off stage).  Meanwhile I was pregnant with my third and it'll be his turn next year to sing while my daughter and her class sang last year (yes...she actually DID sing)!  Such warm memories of the Annual Tree Lighting! Hot cocoa, coffee, cookies, photos...

As a follow up to my previous post about Sports University, my family and I joined in on the family fun day.  The younger ones had a ball on the Kids Zone Obstacle Course. While the older ones tested their football throwing skills, 40 yard dash and 1/2 court throw contest. My husband ran into an old friend he grew up with who is actually looking to buy in market area of Essex County so I look forward to working with him.   I also ran into a friend from high school who I probably haven't seen in about 13 years.  He is running a wrestling program at the facility.  His cousin is actually my manager at PNJP.  It's a small world...but it was nice seeing him after all these years. Although there was a quite a good turnout, I was suprised to see that in a town that has over 700 children in the...

I met Coach Joe of Sports U about 6 years ago at the Caldwell Community Center, Caldwell, NJ.  At that time he was running a 4 year old sports program at the Center and my son and his preschool friends were enrolled in.  It was then that he broke the news to us about leaving Caldwell Community Center and starting the program at Sports U.  We, along with many others, left the Center and followed Coach Joe to Sports U.  Over the past 5 years, he's run many programs for the kids at the Sports U, including but not limited to basketball, baseball, first fundamentals for the little ones, etc.   When schools closed for teacher convention, certain holidays - he runs an all day and/or half day program for the kids which really can be a blessing for working parents.  In addition to the kids class...
