American Littoral Society hosts its first "Bayscape for Barnegat Bay'' workshop in Lacey on Saturday, April 30th. The free workshop starts at 10 a.m. at Hammett's Garden Center at 425 Route 9 in the Forked River section. Hammett's is the first retail nursery that has committed to stocking a dedicated area in its yards with native plants that are recommended by the Bayscape program, said Helen Henderson of the Littoral Society. The Shore Stewards program has been expanded to include Bayscape for Barnegat Bay. It is a grass-roots effort that engages people throughout the Barnegat Bay watershed to become better stewards of the coast by becoming better stewards of the land. For the second year in a row, the Lacey Township school budget calls for no increase in the local property tax rate. But there will be fewer employees in the district for 2011-2012 as about 16 expected retirees will not be replaced. Six of the positions are teachers. Staff agreed to take a wage freeze this year, which saved about $1.5 million and generated an extra $70,000 in aid from the state. But employees will get raises next year. A big boost is the $1.2 million a year for three years the district is getting from selling its solar energy credits. Officials also anticipate a savings of about $300,000 on energy costs.
