At the time I reached out to a dear friend from Wall Street who shared a prescient view: "Once you get your son squared away, you and Liz are going to help a lot of people." I dismissed the prediction. We had immediate problems: teaching "E" to talk, use the toilet, dress himself, make eye contact, share, take turns, understand life and death, love, overcome frustration, regulate with others, engage with people for the love of social connection. My youngest son (we'll call him E) was diagnosed with autism on April 19, 2004. Autism is an epidemic in New Jersey. Since E's diagnosis the incidence has jumped from one child in 150 to one in 94 in the Garden State.We've opted to challenge E.  No one gets a nearly-free ride around here. My older children (18 and 15) constantly complain: You're spoiling him! One of the missions of our family is to lead E to independence. To live independently, work independently. Marry if he chooses. Raise a family. Have best friends, nurturing relationships. Maybe start a blog. Grow his hair long. We liken remediating E's autism to a military siege. (At least I do. What were values a year ago?   So last year's average sale for a single family home was $423,000. Now onto 2007 for the first twn months of this year and we'll compare:   This year's average sale price has dropped to $388,254. That is a decrease of 8.2%. September 22, 2007The Borough of Matawan just mailed out its Final 2007 and Preliminary 2008 property tax bill.Andrew's Opinion on Property Taxes Property tax is a hot-button issue in New Jersey. In Monmouth County many folks believe relief will come in the form of regionalization. Regionalization would entail neighboring towns to pool resources and eliminate the duplication of town departments (i.e. police staffs would be merged). The towns would share resources and rationalize the increase in operating expenses across participating municipalities. On paper regionalization looks good and makes sense. But how New Jersey was settled -- in separate enclaves and commercial centers -- complicates efforts to regionalize. I was just thinking how glad I was that summer was coming. Last summer I did not enjoy it, as summer. I was too busy planning my oldest daughter's wedding last July. This year I intend to savor every moment. I love warm weather. This weekend is going to be great. We have a homeschool picnic on Friday morning at Holmdel Park in Holmdel, New Jersey.
