A while back I saw on television show with doctors giving advice on weight loss.  They said that yes, some people are genetically predisposed to being overweight and a large part of it is heredity.  But, they said, that is not an excuse to be overweight, it just means you have to work harder. Hmmm... Kind of like selling a house in a tough market-- it's not that it can't be done, you just have to work harder.  Yes, it may be more tough-- but that does not mean it cannot be done! So what does working harder to get a house sold mean?  Be Committed:  Be serious about selling your house.  I mean, seriously serious.  I mean doing what is needed to get it sold.  I mean taking the advice of your agent and a home stager.  Have an "Exercise" Plan:  Fix the needed repairs, update anything not fro...

My Love For The Open Road:  How It All Began by Leander McClain I recently purchased a motorcycle.  Most people say, "I didn't know you were a biker".  I have to admit that I love the open road.  This is an affair that started about 40 years ago.  Let me tell you a story.  When I was a kid, new neighbors moved in two doors away. They had a daughter and to my glee two sons; Billy and David Powell.  As it turned out, they became like family.  I spent countless hours at their house.  One year for Christmas, they received Big Wheels.  Oh boy, the neighborhood was in trouble.  You see the Powell's driveway sloped upward and had a level area at the top.  This was GREAT for us.  We would see how fast we could ride down the driveway.  Oh I forgot to say that the driveway ended abruptly, so we h...

It's Not About Me! The photo to the right is the back of my business card.  You will notice that my picture is on the back.  I struggled with the idea of including a picture of myself.  In the end, I wanted people to look at the card and remember my face.  I want them to remember how well I listened.  I want them to remember how I did not forget the smallest details that were so very important to them...the son with allergies, the husband who loves motorcycles, the mother loves to bake and dreams of opening a  bakery, the child with special needs, the grandmother who will be moving in with the family, the special cultural needs of the family, Whether buying or selling, each family has "special needs or wants".  These are the things that are important to my clients...so they had better b...

Unfortunately, many people are facing this situation.  It's a terrible position to be in however IT Happens When bad things happen, it's easy to feel a sense of despair.  You may want to crawl into a hole and hope that the situation will go away.  Unfortunately it wont. You have to have a plan.  Here are a few tips when it comes to talking to your mortgage lender.  Contrary to popular opinion, the banks do not want your house.  They are in business to buy and sell money, not manage real estate.  1.  If you are current on your mortgage, your mortgage company will not want to talk to you......CALL ANYWAY!  There are so many people defaulting on mortgages that the banks are inundated.  You want to notify your mortgage company of your particular situation.  When you call, notes will be adde...

President Obama has signed the "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009" (i.e. the Economic Stimulus Bill).  This bill provides an $8,000 tax credit for first time home buyers.  A first time homebuyer is someone who has not owned a home in the last three years.  Who is considered A first time homebuyer? 1.  Someone who had never owned a home 2.  Someone who has not owned a home in the last three years   So that means a divorced person that used to own a home, but has been living in an apartment for the last three years, now qualifies for this tax credit. This credit applies only to the purchase of your principal residence (the home you live in) purchased anytime between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009.    A tax credit is a dollar for dollar reduction in the amount of tax yo...

It's Spring Today is March 20,2009. It is the first day of spring.....yeah.  The last sign of winter is gone.  What is that you may ask??? My Grey Beard...lol Last night, I stood in m house and after the trumpets stopped blaring, I made the following pronouncment. "Tonight is the last day that you will see this unshaven face until the first day of Winter 2009.  The King has spoken.  Please govern yourselves accordingly" Well, after my wife stopped laughing and rolling her eyes at me...oh yeah, and after I got down off of the chair, I proceeded to shave. So now I am ready for spring. I am ready to get out there with my clients and buy and sell some real estate. Spring gets me even more charged up than I am on a day to day basis.  I hope everyone else is ready to follow me and have a succ...

DREAMS Dreams......we all need to have a dream.  A dream that is personal and unique to your own situation.  If you don't have a dream, you will continue to travel in circles going nowhere fast in life.  Leander McClain has always had a dream or three.  My dreams have changed over the years.  As I got older and wiser, some of the things in my dreams have been replaced by other things.  As a young man, I was infatuated by cars.  I could tell you the name make and model of every car that we passed on the street.  I always wanted to own a Rolls Royce.  I read about the craftsmanship.  The specially bred cows that were used for the leather in the car.  That was a great dream. Today, if I could afford a Rolls Royce, I think I would take the money and do something more satisfying with it........

A Job Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Well I am sure that you are looking at the picture of the pizza to the right and wondering.....huh??? Stick with me :) My grandfather C.D. Pryor used to "preach" about a lot of things. As a child, I would get tired of hearing the same thing over and over again.  As an adult, I can appreciate the wisdom he was attempting to pass on to the next generation.  One of the pearls of wisdom that I heard countless times was... A Job Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Well So what does that have to do with pizza?  I will tell you.  Last night 2/25/2009 at 6:30 pm I wandered into the Oyster Point Dominos Pizza located at 994 J. Clyde Morris Blvd in Newport News, VA (599-3003).  I ordered a pacific veggie pizza and was told it would take about 15 minutes.  As I waited for m...

There Is NO Free Lunch!!! Despite the picture to the right and no matter what You may think, there is no free lunch.  Let me start by saying that I love Active Rain. Active Rain has given me the opportunity to plug into social networking and grow my business. My Active Rain rating has opened the door for me to meet some great people (both on line and in person).   My active rain standing has also made me a prime target for some of the lead generation vultures that hang around in the rain looking for prey.  These companies claim that for a fee, they will deliver to you high quality screened leads of people looking to buy or sell in YOUR target area.  Sometimes, they even claim to give you exclusive rights to a territory. This is Leander McClain's opinion and Leander McClain's opinion onl...

Rut Ro -  Did You Hear That Thunk? Warning:  Graphic Content Ahead.  Animal lovers and squeamish look away now!   Friday afternoon, I was on my way home.  I was feeling pretty good about myself because I had just donated blood.  This was the first time that I have donated in at least five years. I used to donate all the time, but after all of the poking and prodding I was getting in the Navy, I decided to take a break.  Anyway....back to the story at hand.  I drove under a bridge and I heard a thunk at the top of the car.  I looked in the rear view mirror and feathers were flying everywhere.  Mind you....I did not see a bird anywhere because it was dark under the bridge.  Oh well....things happen.  As I continued to drive, I heard a flapping noise on the top of the car.   OH NO!   Tell ...
