"Red and Yellow and Pink and GREEN......." ......purple and orange and blue.  I can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow tune. When I was a little girl, I used to sing these words, following the lead of  Captain Noah, almost every Saturday morning.  Captain and Mrs. Noah  hosted a popular, weekly children's program in the Philadelphia area.  I was and continue to be a fan. The song pointed out how beautiful all the colors of a rainbow are.  And they are. BUT - hasn't the color GREEN taken on a new place in our mind's eye?  Hasn't the color GREEN been lifted to a new level of importance? As part of my work on the Pennsville Public Library Board of Trustees, I questioned the decision to install solar panels on our roof.  In these tough budget times, I worried about the cost.  As...

WET PAINT! In an earlier post, I relayed a pleasant shopping experience at Shimp's Tru Value Hardware Store, in Pennsville, NJ.  I left the store as a satisfied customer.  When I crossed the threshold of my home, I turned into one of the many who tried their best to choose a paint color from a paper swatch only to wonder later, "What Have I Done????" (I will neither confirm nor deny that I once painted and repainted a red metal door a total of four times!)   I had envisioned a slate blue room.  When I began to show the paint swatch to my family members, I could tell that they didn't 'share my vision'......at all. So, back to Shimp's for me.  This time I zeroed in on a lovely buttery gold.  I think it's beautiful, don't you?  There's still some touching up to be done.  The switch covers...

An Exciting New Beginning For Pennsville Township.  Laura Cummings (R) was sworn in as the newest Committeewoman in Pennsville Township on January 1st, 2011.  She joins Mayor Barnhardt and Committeemen McDade, Landis and Richie on the panel.  Make no mistake about it.....these individuals have their work cut out for them. Like other townships, states and the federal government, Pennsville is suffering through a severe budget crisis. Laura will bring her energy, discipline and optimism to the table.  She also brings her years of experience as an employee at The Pennsville National Bank.  She has displayed many outstanding traits as a young lady competing on the soccor field, but also while leading the Pennsville Business Association as it's Chairperson.  It isn't an easy time to be the C...

The Challenge Gone Awry I am enrolled in the 31 Day Challenge of January for Active Rain.  This is the first challenge that I have ever participated in and I have been extremely excited about it. So excited that someone told me last week that my eyes lit up when I said, "....and I'll get 3,000 points!!"  I knew my eyes lit up.....I could feel them do so.  As often happens, something unexpected happened.  My dear little dog, Rhondo, took ill.  I had gone to Nags Head for New Year's weekend and when I returned, he just didn't 'seem right'.  He was lethargic, he wasn't too interested in eating, he had picked up fleas from his lodgings.  He was just in a 'state', as my mom would describe it. I tried my best to nurse him back to health.  (I was able to get rid of all of those pesky fleas!)  ...

I Love To Shop Local - Shimp's True Value Hardware, Pennsville, NJ  08070 Tomorrow I'm starting a little project at my house.  One of the bedrooms is in need of some fresh paint.  I stopped into Shimp's True Value Hardware store this afternoon to pick up some Kilz, white semi-gloss for the trim and a nice slate grey wall color. It was so convenient to take a short break, drive a bit down the road and pick up everything needed for the job.  I was back to work in less than thirty minutes! (and let me tell you, it's a SNAP to have copies of keys made!) I have no attraction to shopping over the bridge.  Especially when there is a family-owned gem like this store.  Shimp's has been in Pennsville since I was a kid. While the gentleman in the paint department was 'shaking' the paint cans, I wa...

"Our Deepest Fear Is Not That We Are Inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking So that other people won't feel insecure around you; We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us;  it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, Our presence automatically liberates others. ~Maryann Williamson, "A Return To Love", 1992 This is dedicated...

Here You Go, Brad! I heard that Brad Andersohn of Active Rain wanted us all to go back and review our first blog post here in the rain.  To tell you the truth, I was a little hesitant to do so.  I was afraid it would be embarrassing! Here it is for any of you who would like to take a peek.  (be nice!) I'm not sure what the point is of this exercise. (Will it help with AR's google juice to bring these old writings some new attention?)  Perhaps those of us who participate will receive some POINTS????  (a girl can only hope!) Well, anyway, I think the curiousity for me was to try to determine where I began and to evaulate where I am now.  I can see that I've improved and I do know that I've got far to go........ And now it continues......

Just What Is Going On With The Library?? I heard from one of my friends yesterday that there are some misconceptions about the Pennsville Library's budget.  It was very disheartening to me. I am currently serving as the President of The Board of Trustees.  I've been on the Board since 1994.  That's a pretty long time.  That's A LOT of meetings over the years.  A quick calculation estimates that I've attended approximately 176 meetings over the years, representing The Pennsville Public Library. I tell you this because I want you to have confidence that I have the facts.  I know the true situation.  It is quite frustrating to learn that some of our township's residents and businesses have decided to hold back their financial support because of misinformation and rumors. Here is what I ...

Can one penny help to save your neighbor's home? Maybe. I was on my way back to Pennsville today when I realized I needed gas.  Out of habit,  I turned on my left blinker to pull into a truck stop.  For whatever reason, I turned that directional signal right off again. It dawned on me, in that split second, that there are five gas stations in my home town.  Five gas stations that are probably doing 'ok'......that are hopefully doing 'ok'.......but in this economy, just may not be doing 'ok'.  How much more would that decision cost me on this day? One red cent per gallon.  That's all.  I know it doesn't seem like one tank of gas could make-or-break a gas station, but multiply that one tank of gas by the many drivers in my hometown.  It could be a significant difference to that business.....

Today's adventure was at the Fort Mott State  Park. (www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/fortmott.html) Located in Pennsville, NJ, Fort Mott State Park is the site of a former US Army coastal defense fort.  Established in 1896, Fort Mott was built to strengthen the defenses of the Delaware River.  Fort Mott consisted of five gun batteries ranging in size from 3-inch rapid fire guns to the massive 12-inch rifles on disappearing carriages which could fire a thousand pound projectile 9 miles down river.  An Army base until 1944, Fort Mott now provides recreational activities as well as historic structures and fortifications.  The New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail's Delsea Region Welcome Center is located in the fomer ordinance building which provides local and site specific displays....

It feels good to be learning something new at work this week.  It also feels a tad overwhelming.  My Broker purchased a sony camcorder in order for our office to join the Coldwell Banker On Location Channel on YOUTUBE (www.youtube.com).  As I wrote last week, one of our newer agents jumped in and posted her new listing in Pittsgrove. It has received a decent amount of views so far.  As a whole, On Location has received over a million video views!  That's amazing!   Now it's my turn.  I have two listings in Valley Park that I am planning on featuring.  The first will be 8 Canterbury Drive (www.8CanterburyDr.com) and the second will be 11 Craig Place (www.11CraigPlace.com).  I've been utilizing the individual websites for my listings, but I hope the videos posted on YOUTUBE will increase...

My boss' brother passed away yesterday afternoon, a warrior against cancer.  Michael was just 56 years old.  He was diagnosed with lung cancer in April, 2009.  Being young, good looking and fit.....it was quite a shock, as all cancers are. This past January, a very close friend of mine also lost his brother to cancer.  Bruce was only 50 years old.  Once again, he was young, good looking and fit.......and he was also a warrior.  He battled for nearly 5 years.  One of my best friends is a warrior, too.  Beryl has been battling breast cancer for almost 5 years.  She is doing beautifully. Please take a moment to say a prayer today for all of those affected by this awful, awful disease.  While you're at it, please pray for the Pino family.....the Walker family.......the Brodsky family..........

"The library connects us with the insight and knowledge, painfully extracted from Nature, of the greatest minds that ever were, with the best teachers, drawn from the entire planet and from all of our history, to instruct us without tiring, and to inspire us to make our own contribution to the collective knowledge of the human species.  I think the health of our civilization, the depth of our awareness about the underpinnings of our culture and our concern for the future can all be tested by how well we support our libraries." ~Carl Sagan, Cosmos

We recently purchased a pre-owned car, a Mazda 5 "mini-wagon," from my local Ford dealer in Pennsville NJ.  The salesperson and the owner of the Ford dealership live in Delaware.  We researched various vehicles on web sites supported by advertising of foreign and domestic car manufacturers.  Living nearby, I was able to walk to the Ford dealer a few times throughout the negotiation and purchase.  We looked at a new Ford Focus there--made in Mexico.  My neighbor works at DuPont's research lab in Delaware, where they make the paint coatings for Mazda--and most other cars too.  The nearest Mazda dealership where I'll have the car serviced is eight miles away in Delaware.  The more modern car wash facilities in Pennsville are owned by folks who live outside Salem county. If I were lucky eno...

Today started very early since it was the BIG DAY for the 1st Annual Business Expo in Pennsville Township.  The committee was to be at the PMHS Gymnasium between 7:30 and 8:00 am.  The committee Chairperson, Rachael Massing, of Franklin Savings Bank had worked diligently to make sure all bases were covered............everything was in place........everyone knew their role. The alarm went off at 5:45am.  I'm not proud to say that it prompted me to say 'bad words'.  ( not a morning person!)  But I did it, I got up and got ready even though the dark side was tempting me to stay in bed a little longer. Rachael posted a comment on Facebook at 6:17am.  Then my phone rang at 6:45am.  Our Chairperson had been involved in a car accident on her way to the Expo.  That quickly her day changed drama...
