Color variation in hardwood floors This is a topic that comes up way too often - AFTER the hardwood floor has been installed. I tell ALL my customers Before we select a product the following: Hardwood flooring is a natural product, manufactured and milled from trees made by none other than Mother Nature.  With any natural product (hardwood, natural tile and stone, etc) there WILL be variation in grain and color.  Some woods have less variation and some other more.  The variation in color comes as a result of mainly 2 things - the natural color of the raw wood itself and the  way the wood accepts the stain.  Red Oak, for example, has wide and narrow grain lines, therefore it will absorb stain differently - the wider grain lines will look darker and the narrow grain lines lighter.  The li... 09/13/2010
