You may remember THIS BLOG in which I talked about bringing Hollywood to New Mexico, where tax incentives and cheap labor costs lure production companies to our expansive state. I have always had a positive stance on show business being in New Mexico, as it has a positive effect on our community economically and socially. I recently received the monthly newsletter from the Film Las Cruces Organization which highlighted some important information that I want to share with you. Firstly, filming had a large impact on our great city this year. You might remember my blog about ‘Due Date’ filming in Las Cruces, but there was more than just one movie being filmed here; “Refuge,” “Warrior,” Ilegales,” “Bomb Squad,” and “The Las Cruces Bowling Massacre” were all filmed or based out of Las Cruce...

In Part I of this multi-faceted blog, I started my project of discovering which of the two leading smart phones would be best for real estate professionals in today’s fast paced market. I decided to look at the top two competitors of mobile service providers, Verizon and AT&T, since the iPhone is exclusive to AT&T, and Verizon is their biggest direct adversary. In Part II, I looked at some applications made specifically for the iPhone that would be hugely beneficial to any real estate professional. In this third and final part, I will be discussing the applications made for the Blackberry, as well as two apps that have been made for both phones that I find essential. The Blackberry: First things first, I discovered that Blackberry has created various business oriented web pages that sh...

In Part I of this two part blog, I started the process of deducing which of the top two smart phones would be the most ideal for a real estate professional. Part I dealt mostly with the two biggest mobile service providers in the US, AT&T and Verizon, and looked at the pros and cons of having an iPhone with AT&T versus a Blackberry with Verizon. So far, I have come to the conclusion that Verizon’s service coverage is the most expanisive, therefore the safest route to take when it comes to choosing between a Blackberry and an iPhone. However, AT&T’s service coverage in the Las Cruces area is still pretty decent, and the iPhone is still a strong contender. After I started looking at personal reviews of the two phones on various websites, I discovered that both of the phones offer differe...

In the last few years, it has become THE question: iPhone, or Blackberry? Anyone with either/or will defend their mobile until the bitter end. Even with the addition of the Droid, it seems like iPhone users and Blackberry users still manage to pin themselves against each other in a friendly, sometimes heated, debate that Droid users frequently get kicked out of for being ‘too new.’ I’ll agree that the Droid is probably too new to really stand up against either phone, which is strange because the Palm smart phones have been around for a few years now and for some reason can’t hold a candle to the Blackberry or the iPhone in popularity. I guess that just goes to show that a new generation of marketing techniques is important when it comes to selling your product; both the iPhone and Blac...

As I mentioned briefly in this blog, I think that food is an integral part of understanding and enjoying a culture. The good stuff (and the bad stuff) changes with every mile that you drive, every state line that you cross, and every ocean that you hop; we always try to avoid major chains when traveling, just to get a taste of that particular area we happen to be in. All that being said, Dona Ana County is lucky enough to be blessed with the right climate and elevation to grow one of the most heavenly vegetables: Hatch Chile. There is no doubt that both green and red chile are essential parts of New Mexico’s diet, culture, history, and economy. Aside from providing a constant, steady stream of revenue to our county and state, red and green chile flavors dishes for every meal time (dess...

My husband and I love to travel. That is our number one hobby; packing up and heading out to uncover a part of the world we have never seen. We love to try to experience the culture of a new place in every which way, which always includes sightseeing and eating. We have been to some incredible places and have seen some extraordinary things in places like Eastern Europe and central South America; we are so lucky and are so thankful that we have the means and opportunities to relish in our passion of traveling. We are such a go-go-go kind of couple; we work hard so that we can do the things we love to do. Of course, getting to a place like Machu Picchu is an ordeal in itself. I think that the journey to the destination is half the fun. But even after all of our wonderful adventures in ...

The New Year is fast approaching and we’re all beginning to take down our icicle lights and red velvet bows as we make room for all of the goodies we received this holiday season. The ’season to give’ may be coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean we should all stop giving. How many times have you (or your family) received heaps of clothing, electronics, and doo-dads for Christmas and had no idea what to do with the stuff it replaced? So often I hear someone say, ‘Oh, we just threw the old stuff out,’ when it was probably in pretty good condition. For the last few years, myself and my family have made a dedicated effort to share all of our gifts with those who are less fortunate. I know that a lot of people’s New Years resolutions often include cleaning out the clutter. Rather than tos...

Time Magazine recently wrote up an article about the first commercial space port being built just a few short hours from our city. I think that bringing national - and even international - attention to these remarkable strides in technology towards the final frontier are extremely important when it comes to our local economy and New Mexico tourism. There is no denying that the Spaceport is costing the state of New Mexico and two of the counties around the building site a pretty penny; collectively, the legislature, along with Dona Ana and Sierra County, will front approximately $198 million on construction, while Richard Branson and his mega company, Virgin Galactic, will pay around $250 million to lease the site for twenty years. When I first read about the projected costs, especial...

Blog by Kevin Wilson The Wilsons were out and about again this weekend! A great fare of free holiday activities was offered up to the people of Las Cruces! All you needed was a desire to be festive and good warm clothing to brave the unseasonably cold weather! YES!! It was cold in the desert!! Old man winter served up SNOW, not once, but TWICE in the same week and followed it up with some low numbers for our nighttime temperatures. It made for a wonderful and drastic change from the norm. We all got to dust off our long johns and dig out our gloves and woolen caps for the occasions. Friday night was the 2nd annual Winterfest. This was sponsored by the City of Las Cruces and put together by some very dedicated and tireless volunteers from throughout the community. I would like to send...

Each year, the American Southwest Theater Company at New Mexico State University puts on a production during the holiday season (on top of their several other productions each year), and as of the last few years, the ASTC has switched off between the classic yuletide tale of ‘A Christmas Year’ and a different, non-holiday production. This year, the ASTC is proud to present “Seussical the Musical” from November 20th through December 6th at the Hershel Zohn Theater on the NMSU campus. Seussical entwines the favorites of the Dr. Seuss world, including Horton and the Whos, the Cat in the Hat, the Grinch, and more, and creates a magical, fantastical world in which all of Dr. Seuss’s characters interact and live among each other. The show is rated PG, and provides greatly quality fun for eve...

First things first, I want to ask a question: What did we do before Google? For me, it’s strange to sit and remember the last time I had to really search for the answer to something, whether it be a recipe, a phone number, or a movie. And by ‘really search,’ I don’t mean sifting through the first four pages of Google’s search before I find the site I’m looking for; do you remember how difficult it used to be to find a new business’s phone number or location before the phone book was updated? It’s almost unfathomable to think about planning a trip itinerary without the help of the Internet… How did we even book hotels 10 years ago? It boggles my mind! On that same note, the information at our fingertips is endless. Particularly, real estate marketing has drastically changed over the las...

Any Las Cruces native or resident will tell you that if there’s any football game to see, it’s Mayfield versus Las Cruces High. For nearly 30 years, the two high schools were the only secondary education schools in the city, and as a result, a deep-rooted rivalry was born. Even with the arrival of Onate High School in 1993, the competition between Mayfield and Las Cruces has remained untouched. Each year, thousands of teenagers, parents, football fans, and Las Cruces residents show up to take sides at Aggie Stadium, since the game has reached a magnitude that surpasses the usual high school stomping grounds, the Field of Dreams. Last year, officials estimated some 30,000 spectators came out for the game (that’s three times the usual amount at Aggies games, if that’s any indication). La...

Most people looking to sell live in homes that are a little dated. Trends come and go, and over time, we all do the best we can to keep our homes exactly how we want them. It’s tough to compete against the brand new, never lived in, built to sell houses; the only downside to those is that they’re priced much higher than homes that have been previously lived in. So, if a cost-conscious and trendy couple or family is looking to buy, there’s a small market available to them. Nowadays, there’s a full-fledged portion of the workforce dedicated to improving your home and essentially redesigning it to make it as desirable as possible to the demanding market. These people are called stagers, and if you’ve read my blog before, you may have seen THIS ONE in which I talked about the benefits of...

I have to admit, I love these videos; they’re to-the-point, easy to understand, short, and helpful. The sad truth about this particular video is that there is a need for it; people fall victim to Internet scams all the time. Even worse, the phishing perpetrators are the most difficult to catch, since most often they perform their scams at public Internet Service Providers, which makes them difficult to trace. A woman in our office recently spent hours and hours on the phone with her bank, credit card companies, social security offices, and more dealing with the repercussions of her daughter responding to a phishing scam. Most people already have a sort of safety net set up within their emails with junk filters and such, but we have to reiterate this to our children and friends so that t...

Today, Las Cruces truly felt like fall. The colors in the sky had an opaqueness to them, and all of the leaves looked a little more yellow. In the shade, it actually felt cold; for Las Cruces, this is a big deal. Our seasons here are very mild, so even in late October our days can get up into the mid-70’s. But even more than the temperature change, we started to feel the pressures of winter since we started winterizing our home. Our fireplace is used frequently in the cold months, so we hired a chimney sweep to come over and get rid of the soot and creosote that had collected over the months. We also had a screen placed on top to limit rodent and bird access to our chimney. After all this was said and done, I got to thinking about the different things we can do to save money and protec...

Just yesterday I was informed of an upcoming event here in Las Cruces: The US Army Field Band is performing at the Las Cruces High School Gymnasium on Thursday, October 15th, at 7pm. I’ve never had the opportunity to hear the President’s Field Band perform live before, only the Marine Corps Band a few years ago and that was spectacular. If you’re a fan of live music, this is a great opportunity to hear some of our country’s finest musicians showcase their talents alongside students from Mayfield High School and Las Cruces High School. What a cool event! In order to reserve a seat, you must order tickets and pick them up from any of the following places. The tickets themselves are free, but seating is limited and only if the people who have tickets don’t show up will the general public ...
