PET SAFETY IN ARCTIC WINTER 2014 ~ Westchester County, NY 10708! Wow is it cold outside...from Maine to Mississippi!  If we wanted to live in sub-Arctic Siberia, we'd fly to Russia, right?  Our family owned business is knee deep in frozen pipe water damage work for flood victims...from homes to offices and even a Synogogue in White Plains, NY.    So we have a new "puppy" in the family., Atlas, shown above (Grrr...could not get pic where I want it on blog, sorry, so there's a dupe!).  We found this Lab mix on Youtube at a local shelter.  Since the arctic freeze this month, I looked up pet safety because of our recent Westchester County rescue.  Atlas loves the snow and all about it as you can see in his picture, in our yard.   But, our part of NY state is not used to all this ice and t...

A HOME FIRE CAN BE DEVASTATING TO FAMILIES, THEIR BELONGINGS & BUSINESSES OWNERS, TOO, IN FACT, SOME CAN'T MAKE IT BACK AFTER THE FIRE DAMAGE ~ Bronxville, NY 10708   We are seeing so many appliance, smoking and cooking fires in Westchester County this fall.     There were three in just the past 48 hours...and -- all but the one with no injuries, thank God.   One was actually due to an old, tube TV that overtaxed a wall socket and sparked a wall / socket fire -- could have been prevented.   Our crews have arrived after an emergency call to help a home or business owner --  from Harrison to Tarrytown and down to Scarsdale, Bronville and Eastchester -- with fire clean ups.  The firemen had saved their home or business and now someone had to professionally clean it up.     The hard part ...

It's that time of year again...to "Fall Back," turn the clock "back" and get our hour back!     I just love this time of year.  The colors, light and leaves are on fire, in their last hoorah before winter arrives.  Also, we get that hour back that we lost when we "sprang forward" for daylight savings in the Spring. I just miss that hour of sleep ALL year!   Before you go to bed this Saturday night, Nov 2nd, turn those clocks back by an hour.  Remember that we "Spring forward" an hour each Spring and "Fall Back" at this time of year.  But, times change and we're a month off for both spring and fall time change, as of 2005 (read more below).   You can read below about a so-called energy savings measure that extended the months we spring or fall in and out of daylight savings, below!  Ac...

Thoughts for Thursday as fall flowers are in full bloom & memories of bright mums come back into focus Don't mums say "Fall Flowers' or WHAT?  My grandmother loved fall mums and we always tried to have them on hand for her Halloween birthday on the 31st.  She passed away a couple of years ago at 93.  But, whenever I see the mums pop, bringing the last of the year's blooms into focus, Gram comes to mind...with love and nice Fall memories.  Stop and enjoy the flowers today, if you can!

NOW HEAR THIS...NOT ALL THIEVES ARE STUPID!!   1. A friend of a friend left their car in the long-term parking at San Jose while away, and someone broke into the car. Using the information on the car's registration in the glove compartment, they drove the car to the people's home in Pebble Beach and robbed it. So I guess if we are going to leave the car in long-term parking, we should not leave the registration/insurance cards in it, nor your remote garage door opener. This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology.   2. GPS. A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to footb...

Rain storms are a daily event now and may cause flooded basements in Westchester County towns -- like Eastchester, NY 10709.    Okay, so summers officially here, or so it seemed for a brief, shining moment.  Now, we have serial rain, the water tables high and there's no where for the water to go.   By next week, we may get a break, but the temps go way up again.  Heavy rains through Friday night, with T-storms bringing inches per hour, can sometimes flood homes and businesses in towns like Bronxville.   We live in Fleetwood and have a local, family owned business that serves Eastchester, so we're often there to shop and visit great restaurants.  I take our clients to Mickey's a lot for lunch and to Ciao's for special occasions.  Our family believes in the 'Shop Local' spirit that is swe...

Flooding Summer Rains and extra showers may cause hot water heaters to fail & flood basements from Eastchester to Bronxville, NY 10708   It must be all of the showers we're seeing this summer, with a total of 4" above normal as of August.  Even with this lovely cool down in southern Westchester County, NY, the water table levels are still up.  So in some flood prone areas the lower Hud, in parts of Bronxville 10708, we're seeing flooded basements.   Most are due to appliance malfunctions or power issues, so that the home or business owner's sump pump is not working, or their hot water heater just gives up.  Add in a hard rain from our summer thunderstorms and it can be a recipe for basement disaster.  For homes that are on the market, be sure to check those lower levels, before taking...

ALERTS for Bronxville, NY 10708 ~ Police Chief announces a bridge closure    First, we had all that rain this June that flooded Bronxville basements and even businesses throughout Westchester.  In some cases, I was having flashbacks to the flooding after Hurricane Irene that filled many of our Bronxville client's homes and businesses.     With a microburst or two, the high water table and now more rain, we are seeing lots of wet basements and clients frustrated by rainy weather, but happy to have their properties cleaned up.   We are helping home and business owners deal with wet, water damaged basements and finished lower levels all over Westchester County for the past two weeks.   Meantime, Chief of Police, Christopher Satriale at the Bronxville Police Department sent out this alert, ...

Here's a look back at my top blog posts from May 2013, sorted according to clicks.   Hardwood with dark pet stains – Can you get rid of them? This is a key question homeowners have, since it's a very common issue.  It looks like it has real staying power as it continues to grow.  Right now, it has about 1,500 hits.   That laptop sticker did it again! Yes, and even since the writing of this post, it's led to a couple more leads.   When you're hot and tired, you make mistakes We ended up winning this job from this super nice customer, and her floors came out great.  She is so excited and I think has become a raving fan.  Very happy about how this estimation mistake may actually lead to a lot more biz in the future.  Now, I need to follow up w/ the real estate agent.   Sisal Carpeting - Wh...

Our overnight rainstorm dumped nearly 2 inches of rain on our area, flooding basements or threatening to, in Bronxville, NY 10708      In fact, parts of Brooklyn and Hoboken are underwater already and parts of lower Westchester County are in the eye of the storm, even though it's passing to our south.     On Dopplar, this storm sure looks like a Spring "Nor'Easter' and it may rain through Friday morning! If so, be careful on the roads and keep an eye on your basement and any full dehumidifiers on lower levels in your home and businesses.       Depending on where you live or work in the Tri-state area, between 3/4 and 1 1/4 inches of rain has fallen across the area since 6 am.  Forecasters are already reporting heavy rain and flooding in towns like Hoboken, where more than 2" fell in the...

Spring is finally here,  but we are cleaning up sewage backups and water damages from overflow in  bathrooms and plumbing issues for many Westchester County homeowners.   Many Restoration companies -- like our local, family owned company and background checked staff -- are busy with sewage and water damages in Westchester basements and finished lower levels / media room.  Attics and upper level bathrooms in some homes and businesses have not escaped either, due to regular plumbing problems, or recent high winds that damaged roofing and plumbing on upper levels.   Anatomy of a Water Damage    Water is an essential part of many cleaning processes, but under some circumstances it can damage our belongings.  The harmful effect of water damages can be greatly reduced by prompt and wise act...
