Preventing a fire or flood disaster in your Eastchester home or business, in Westchester 10709, especially in a kitchen, basement or attic Most of us know to be careful during the holiday season about candles, roaring warm fires and when cooking on stovetops.  Yet, the National Fire Protection Association tracks more fires from Thanksgiving through New Years than at any other time of the year. At our  Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon, we have seen both amazing luck saving homes and business from destructive fires -- usually due to the Eastchester - Tuckahoe Fire Department, the regions finest!  And, we have seen tragedies where a home is a complete loss and must be rebuilt ground up.  Or, a business has a little fire, but the down time leads the owners to close their doors. None of u...

We understand the stress and trauma in after a fire affects your home or business in Eastchester, NY 10709 One of our great employees had a smoked ham for Easter one year, unexpectedly.  That's after Mom left her oven mitt in the gas oven after basting the dinner.  Needless to say, the gas stove caught the fabric on fire and smoke went everywhere.  They saved the meal and their ham tasted "smoked" and "was the best they'd had in years." That's a happy ending, but we have had tragedies, like my family's barn on a horse farm, when it burned down with generations of Model A and Model Ts inside.   Then, there are beloved pets that do not make it out of the fire and survive, and there we are, crying with our clients for their lost, furry loved ones.  Local firefighters saved this dog & got h...

Wind Storm & flooding rain cause wet attics & basements in Eastchester NY 10709 Thousands of people in Westchester and the region woke up with no power this month.  Strong winds and torrential rain caused transponder explosions on city streets, downed trees on cars and homes and live wires across many many streets.   Firefighters had to knock down a transformer fire in Greenburgh near the intersection of Everts Avenue and Payne Road. The Bronx River Parkway was shut down for hours in Pleasantville because of the flooded roadwayGWB Photo Credit to the phenomenal:  Jerry DeMarco  The severe thunderstorms and gusty winds that swept through the area and resulted in power outages and one school closure.  Bedford Central Schools closed because of multiple road closures due to downed trees and...

Eastchester homes and businesses could experience flooding rain and a damaging thunderstorm this week ~ NY 10709 Conditions favor thunderstorms by Wednesday, so drive safely. Photo Credit: noaa.gov     Was anyone else in the 9A backup last night after a "carbecue" shut down the parkway?  I was coming home from a lovely sunny afternoon at our horse, Krystol and went from 60 to -0- at Shrub Oak.  Throwing on the hazards, we all managed not to hit each other.       We are unseasonably warm this week and higher temps should stick around this week, followed by heavy rains and potential flooding in southern Westchester on Wednesday.  That's when we need to watch out for damaging wind and storms in the northern suburbs near NYC...actually through March because of El Nino...yes, again...still!...

Freezing nights from President's Day weekend and a warm up causes flooded homes and businesses in Eastchester, NY 10709 Weather Channel's great graphic of arctic air pushing into our area this month...bundle up Tuckahoe. With low, arctic temps, I am already calling 2016 "Bi-polar," as in the ARCTIC.   I'm offering some prevention tips below, but unfortunately we are in this chilly cycle.  That's with below freezing nights and even days with temperatures below 32 degrees.   We actually broke a 100 year temp record last night.  Our National Weather Service reported temperatures in Central Park that fell to -1 Saturday into Sunday.  This cold wave has shattered a Valentine's Day record of 2 above, set in 1916.  Furthermore, it was the coldest morning since Jan. 19, 1994, when the low was ...

We are proud national partners with the American Red Cross, especially in a fire or flood disaster in Eastchester or Tuckahoe, NY. As we enjoy summer weather in December, it may be tempting to light up that grill, or enjoy a candlelit evening on our wooden porch outside.  We have seen so many difficult or tragic fire damages from the most innocent of situations with open flame candles or grills too close to a roofline or garage doors.  Enjoy, but be careful of fires and beware of puffbacks -- that are essentially like a fire or soot damage in terms of how we clean it. As a disaster recovery and cleanup team, Servpros nationwide have signed on as a national sponsor of the American Red Cross Ready Rating™ program.  It's a free, web-based program designed to help home owners, businesses, ...

Beware of fall fires during Halloween and Holiday celebrations this year in Eastchester, NY 10709  The fall season brings cooler temperatures, beautiful colors and an abundance of outdoor activities.   So, we suggest that home and business owners plan ahead this season, to help ensure a safe and fire free Fall 2015.  Using candles in glass containers in decorating, or in getting ready for Halloween primetime and trick or treaters, is key for safety.  We all love fall colors and candlight, but have seen too many fires, due to open flames near curtains or table settings.  This candle is safely outside, on conrete with leaves away from a structure...and it's lovely! Here are some suggestions that may help your family or staff to make merry and celebrate All Hallows Eve, Chanukah and Christ...

Much of the Northeast was going into shutdown mode Monday ahead of a blizzard of "historic proportions," with thousands of flight cancellations, a statewide travel ban in Connecticut and road crews and utilities braced for a long night of work heading into Tuesday, when the storm could reach full strength. The blizzard is expected to dump as much as 3 feet of snow along a 250-mile stretch from northern New Jersey up to southern Maine, affecting as many as 50 million people and potentially crippling New York City and Boston. Snowfall was expected as far south as Washington. The warning issued by the National Weather Service also indicated winds of up to 75 miles per hour and widespread coastal flooding was possible, starting Monday and extending throughout Tuesday.   Severe storms or hurricanes can damage to businesses and homes in Eastchester, NY, so have an emergency plan!    Some of you may have seen my blog posts earlier this summer for hurricane prep and preparing for the worst -- we can always hope for the best!       I mentioned the statistics about businesses that suffer a disaster like a severe storm -- a microburst -- or Superstorm Sandy storm surge and/or water damage in a store or office building -- wet computers are not good.     A key point was that only 50% of us will make it back from a severe fire, water or storm damage.  See my blogs for any info. you may have missed or will need, at:       Hurricane Season 2014 Starts Now Hurricane Season 2014 Prep - Part 2, tips Hurricane Season 2014 Prep Part 3, tips   September is National Pr...

A moving company that terrorized my elderly parents on a cross country move to Westchester Count, NY!   Some of my Rainmaker friends know that we moved my parents in with us in Westchester County last Fall.  This followed some family set backs and an ongoing illness that had made it difficult for my Dad and Stepmom, Diana, to stay in their home in Oregon.  So they put it up for sale out there and moved across country by plane, train and truck.  DO NOT, please for your sake, hire ALLIANCE EXPRESS MOVING or RUN TRUCKING LINES, INC. near or far for your West Coast clients.  They actually are both national companies, so New York and other buyers, beware!   HORROR STORY - It's a good thing that I'm not a mean or violent person, after the treatment that my older parents received from Alliance...

Lower Westchester County NY reflects Climate Change with record snowfall and flooding rains in Eastchester, NY 10709   Yeesh, will it never end!  First our record snowfall and now, we have flooding rain coming Friday.  Wrote this as more snow arrived yesterday morning, then we had to go dig out our office and get the crews out to frozen pipe flood victims.  Sorry for delay folks...just so tired of shoveling I could spit...think I did (icky for a chick, I know)     Meantime, our flooding rains this Friday are ominous -- that could melt our foot+ of snow all over the Tri-state area.  This could cause water damages in basements or finished lower levels over the weekend.  Keep an eye on your sump pumps everyone (If they fail, call my friend Debbie at Aquaduct for repair -- we're in Women of...

Seasons of Change   This week feels like the seasons are changing. We let go of summer; flip-flops, t-shirts, skirts and shorts. Let's go outdoor activities like sailing and swimming. We switched to soccer and football. We reorganize our closets making room for fall winter clothes.   All this begs the question: Should you move during the fall and winter? If you're selling, it may be the best time. You're not competing with as many properties. The winter buyer is a serious buyer. The same can be said of the winter seller. You're serious about making a move.   Enjoy the crisp, clear, crackly days of fall!

If flooding rains didn't make our basements wet, then failing hot water heaters are causing a water damage or two in Eastchester, NY 10709     What do we want bet that the water heater failures and resulting wet basements that we are cleaning up this week are due to that hellish heat wave and muggy weather.  We are showering 2x per day on average now, how about you and yours? Of course, it makes sense because Forrest and I are in the "dirty jobs" business at our local fire and water cleanup / restoration company.  All the flooding rains last month and heat this month are making our appliances run overtime to keep up...even leaking AC Units are causing home and business owners to call us in the past 48 hours!     Our family owned Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon handles the remova...

Police & Firefighters are always looking for ways to support safety in Westchester County towns like our Eastchester NY 10709   I don't know about everyone else driving around in this heat, but our crews and my family have noticed a bigger police presence in town.  Here's why, courtesy of a story by Zak Fiella in Eastchester's Daily Voice..the best!     "Click it or Tick it" is a statewide initiative to get us to Buckly Up in New York, so our local police are doing their jobs.     Through this coming weekend and since May 20th, the Police Department has checkpoints set up and it's all about safety.  A dear friend of mine lost her handsome young husband when he was ejected from his BMW.  His rather new car had AIRBAGS that would have saved his face...his life.  He had swurved to avoid ...

Flooded basements and storm damaged homes and businesses may follow Winter Storm Nemo, even in Eastchester NY 10709     Here we go again…shades of wind and snow storm that flooded and damaged homes and businesses in Westchester County in 2010.  It’s reminding some local forecasters of that damaging storm because of the amount of snow expected overnight Friday into Saturday.   This storm is being called a “historic blizzard” and will sweep across our part of the Mid-Atlantic and track north to hammer Boston this Friday.  It’s a biggie because the storm now dubbed NEMO will bring up to two feet of snow to NYC, plus rain and tropical storm force winds!  So, it’s expected to be a storm of "historic" proportions, beginning with light flurries on Thursday night and lasting through Saturday mo...
