There is a truly great auto mechanic in Nyack. His name is Kevin, and his shop is called Kevin’s Ace Repairs.  Actually I have never asked him where the Ace comes from. Will have to inquire on next visit.  Kevin has been taking care of our various cars for over 20 years.  From our 1988 Ford Bronco, Volkswagen Jetta and Passat  to our Volvo SUV we have never thought to go anywhere else.  A story my husband likes to tell which describes Kevin takes place about 20 years ago. My husband worked in Clifton, NJ at the time, and he was driving back to Nyack on the Garden State Parkway in a snowstorm. He put the car in 4 wheel dive, and it started making a horrendous noise. He was tempted to pull over, but he decided to slowly make his way home. He made it to Kevin’s shop in Nyack, and Kevin ...

On Saturday night the Nyack Park Conservancy hosted the Deckade fundraiser. To help collect money to build a local skate park we charged between $50-$100 for admission and inside had a silent auction and raffled off some Chocolate Skateboards product. There were free drinks, food a live band and a DJ. As an added treat the Bobshirt Skateboard  Collection was on view which includes decks from the 1990′s including brands like Chocolate, Real, World Industries, Cream, Blind, Plan B, 101, and Planet Earth. The evening was a great success and we raised over $12,000. As president of the Nyack Park Conservancy I would like to thank all the hardworking volunteers and my fellow board members who made this event such a great success. Special thanks to the Nyack Fencing Academy, Café Barcel, Defia...

The Nyack Park Conservancy, a  501c3 an officially recognized Non Profit has been spearheading a fundraising campaign to make this new playground a reality as well as being a lead agency for other park projects which are included in the Nyack Master Plan.

Well the voters have spoken, and the School Bond Referendum Bond has passed. Very powerful emotions and complicated issues made this election one where word of mouth and the internet both insured a high turnout which is always good for the democratic system. Political apathy has never been an issue in Nyack. We have seen many changes in our real estate market this year. Three big issues affecting our market are interest rates, consumer confidence and bank lending guidelines. Interest rates have increased more than one percent over last year’s lows of just under 3.5%. While some have predicted that rising interest rates could result in a slower real estate recovery (and it still may), right now it appears to be motivating buyers who have been on the sidelines to buy now rather than risk even higher rates in the near future. The rising interest rates are coupled with an improved economic outlook. According to the Consumer Confidence Index, income expectations have rebounded to their highest level in two and a half years as Americans are growing more optimistic about employment opportunities a...

From time to time I like to highlight a village merchant that for me exemplifies the joy of being part of a close knit community such as Nyack. The Nyack Barber Shop on Main Street is just one of the  those places. The owners name is Vlad, and he always has a warm smile, and is genuinely happy to see you when you come through his door. His shop harks back to an almost bygone era where the barber shop was a place for community members to catch up with local gossip and talk politics as well. You can also relax read the NY Post or listen to Vlad’s pet parakeet singing merrily away by the cash register, but remember the  lollipops are only for children.

It’s that time of year again. The political campaigns are underway. Here in Nyack lawn signs are beginning to pop up in yards, mailings are showing up in our mailboxes, and people are beginning to discuss the various candidates and what they stand for. This is how the system is supposed to function, and it is exciting. One primary race that strikes me as particularly important is the race for Rockland County Executive.  Please do your own research on the candidates, and go to your polling location on September 10, and pull the lever or click the icon for the candidate you feel will best serve our community.  If you are unsure where to vote visit the link below. http://vic.ntsdata.com/rocklandboe/pollingplacelookup.aspx

According to Jim Politi, Nyack Village Administrator  our recreational sprinklers are now operational. It was very unfortunate that a broken part took the sprinklers offline for most of the summer, but they are back. Weather forecasts say that it will be a hot week so take the kids and a picnic lunch and cool off down by the river in Nyack Memorial Park.  Very important - you rest your hand on the the  black cover of the short green post. The heat from your hand activates the sprinklers – very high tech. J

Building on the great response to the First Friday the Nyack Art Collective will be at it again this Friday. For the 2nd First Friday there will be art openings, film screenings, and music at the Main Street Gazebo. Some of the events include a group show of all the Nyack Art Collective members which will hang at the Nyack Library for the month of August, and a great documentary film on the life of photographer, Dorthea Lange. If you haven’t had a chance yet stop by Hopper House to see the exhibition of  Dorthea Lange photographs.

Well it’s official – the Village of Nyack downtown is about to get a jolt of color. The announcement this past Monday that Nyack had received enough votes to win the Benjamin Moore “Main Street matters” campaign is exciting news for all of us. Merchants and residents alike are excited for work to begin. I think it’s great that the program will hire local painters to do the work, and those merchants and building owners get to choose their colors. It’s a win-win situation. Nyack was the only community in New York State and one of four in the northeast to win. Congratulations to Mayor Jen Laird-White and the Nyack Chamber of Commerce who worked together to help this happen.

It looks like Nyack will be a location for a new HBO series called “The Leftovers”. The story is based on the best-selling novel by Tom Perrotta. Interesting story where 2 percent of the population just vanishes. It reminds me of a Peter Weir film “Picnic at Hanging Rock” where a class from a girls school in Australia go on a picnic and a few of the girls just vanish-very  mysterious. The casting director will be looking for townspeople to be extras for the series. Anyone interested is encouraged to audition from 4-7 at the Nyack Center this Saturday. Justin Theroux husband will play the main character Kevin Garvey, the newly appointed mayor of Mapleton.

Well I mentioned the other day that Stop and Shop in Nyack was actually closing, and I stopped in for cold cuts on the their last day purely by accident. Thought I would post a picture of the last cold cut run.  Completely off topic I would like to invite anyone who is free this Saturday June 8 to the Nyack Park Conservancy fundraiser from 6-8. For more information call Nancy Blaker Weber at 914-263-3403.

It is with heavy heart and a wistful sigh that I write about the loss of a local commercial establishment that we will all surely miss. Our local Stop and Shop is closing and they have already reopened a big, shiny super Stop and Shop on Rt. 303 in Orangeburg -ugh. Formerly a Grand Union and now currently our little Stop and Shop on Rt.  59 is where you are always guaranteed to meet  some friend or another from Nyack, and as Larry David would say do a stop and chat and pick up something for dinner as well. I chuckle when I think of the various cashiers and their unique personalities, and Trish the store manager who always has a big, warm hello for me when I walk in. I guess this change is what the corporate people at Stop and Shop feel is for the best, but I am sure that I am not alone ...

There has been a lot of attention lately given to websites offering online home valuations. Simply enter an address and voila the program will assign a value to a particular property. It isn’t that these sites lack value or utility. They often offer information on a home’s marketing history, when the property last sold, the sales price and other insightful data. However, when it comes to determining price, there are so many variables that even the most sophisticated software can’t come close to determining a home’s value. We know that all homes with four bedrooms and 2.5 baths are not created equal – even those within a few blocks of each other. A computer program can’t begin to capture the magic of a magnificent view or the “wow factor” of a unique home with stunning architectural deta...

The Nyack Music program will receive a grant of $10,000 from the National Educational Music Company. The music parents’ support group will receive $1000 as well. Nyack was vying for the prize against sixteen other school music programs. The public decided the winners by voting online, and I would like to say congratulations to these Nyack students and their teachers.
