For a politician, John G. Testa, Westchester County Legislator, says he’s too sentimental about most things, including his hometown of Peekskill where he was born and bred and particularly his Arts and Crafts home which has been in his family since 1940.“I am the fourth generation of my family here in town,” Testa said recently, “and I have moved only two blocks from the home in which I was born when I acquired this house in 1984, where my two great aunts had formerly lived.”Built in 1928, the modest three-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath, 1400 sq. ft. house became Testa’s renovation project for some years. When asked to what extent he worked on the house, he answered, “Everything possible! It has been totally redone, from the heating system, converting to all natural gas, electricity, plum...

Of all the wonderful and diverse communities we have among us in the Hudson Valley, one of the most intriguing for both its promise of the future and grittiness of the past is Peekskill in the northwestern corner of Westchester. Historically, Peekskill is known as an American industrial center for its iron plow and stove products and for Binney & Smith Company, now makers of Crayola crayons, as well as Fleischmann’s Yeast, not to mention the notorious Peekskill Riots of 1949.      Today, Peekskill is poised for a long awaited re-gentrification, promise after promise that it would come, with a spate of artists’ lofts and galleries, a colony of musicians, some really good restaurants, a beautiful park by the Hudson River and a number of housing opportunities that are moderately priced, in...

The table is set for the third annual Hudson Hop and Harvest on Saturday October 4th 2014, 2pm-9pm at Peekskill Riverfront Green Park.  Hop and Harvest is a celebration of farm to table food, music and craft beer. All of the food is local and if you are familiar with Westchester you already know we have some amazing farms.  I try to attend these types of events whenever I travel, I love to experience different areas and chefs.  The food can be pricey but at least you know who is preparing it and where it came from.  The best part is you don't need any advance tickets, everything is pay as you go!  You can visit this link for all the details http://hudsonhopandharvest.com/The event coordinaters have implemented a new carry in/carry out policy wich they would like all attendees to adhe...

The Branding Iron restaurant serves great burgers, wings, steaks, and great sandwiches.  The picture above is a generous serving called the Kitchen Sink. On Saturday nights you will find Tana visiting the tables and making sure that everyone is having a great dining experience.  She is a great hostess.  On Sundays Tana hosts Tailgate parties starting at noon with brunch.  This is a great place to spend Sundays during football season.   The Branding Iron is located in Peekskill NY at 362 Washington S...

This photo was taken at Riverfront Green Park right by the train station in Peekskill NY.  I visited the park a couple of times during the summer to and decided to try to capture the late afternoon into early evening light.  In the end, I took quite a few photos of the area, but this fire show was probably the most dramatic of the photos.  I was taking panoramas in the late, late afternoon light when the cloud cover started showing signs of  a really interesting sunset.  If the cloud cover remained, I knew we were in for a treat, so I stayed put and watched and waited as the sun slowing went down.  I was in luck, the clouds stayed put and caused the sun to filter through in this really unique way.  The sunset was bright yellow and it was like a fireball in the sky. On an evening such as...

I just listed a charming home in the very cool city of Peekskill. My love for older homes, gastronomy and local history is sated here in Peekskill; put me down at the river at sunset, with a bottle of red, and I am quite satisfied. As I was driving home last night from a new listing at 311 Depew Street, one of those charmed filled colonials Peekskill is known for, and hey, by the way, did you know Depew Street is named after Chauncey Depew a US Senator in the 1860’s? Well, it got me thinking about what is so great about living in the 10566 area code. There are so many interesting aspects to Peekskill, and if I was just to mention the magnificent views and sunsets along the riverfront with the gentle mountains that not only change seasonally, but also through the course of the day, it wo...

Last Thursday at a Chamber meeting, I met a local woman, Deb Carlin, who is passionate about the book “The Wizard of Oz”; she spoke to us all about Frank Baum, the author, who lived in Peekskill for several years as a teenager in the 1860’s. This is all pretty recent news, and maps from that time period, backed up by historical facts, show there really was an actual yellow brick road, which currently is a parking lot in downtown Peekskill.  From these findings, many believe Baum was inspired by the yellow brick road that became the backbone for the story.  I really love this stuff, but I had to go see for myself, and today I did. West Street comes up if you Google it, but there isn't a sign; if you go down Hudson Ave. towards the river, make a right on S. Water Street, drive maybe 50 f...
