I can't believe that June is nearly over! Our students are still getting into 'summer mode' since the last day of classes were last week  (I'm convinced we're the last ones in the nation to start summer break!) which also means that it's really & truly summer now.  With the Independence Day holiday looming upon us, many are planning where to watch fireworks.  For our family, the best fireworks displays are FAR, FAR away.  Yes they're pretty and it's amazing what designs can be pulled off but between loud noises & big crowds, we're better off contributing our "oooos & awwws" from a distance. Capital Region firework activities start in my home town this Friday night, June 30th, at Jumpin Jacks in Scotia.  The fireworks are preceeded by a waterski show featuring a number of my friends.  Ev...

My ‘to do’ list today included the goal of getting a blog piece done. But what to write about? Well... I just got a phone call that helped answer that question! Searching for a new home is exciting and can be stressful. There are a few things you can do though to help reduce that stress and make your goal of becoming a new homeowner a reality. Here’s some of my two cents: • Turn off HGTV. These shows are great but this is NOT real, real estate life. • Get preapproved through a local, credible lender. KNOW what your financial limits are and what is going to be expected of your wallet during the process. • Hire (yes hire!) an agent that you can trust and enjoy being with throughout the transaction. Buying a house is a big deal. Hiring involves interviewing and you really should interview ...

Today’s the day! Yes – it’s my father’s birthday and that alone makes it an extra-special day. But for those of us in the Scotia-Glenville and surrounding areas, it’s also the unofficial start of summer.  Today we ignore the forecast for snow's arrival tomorrow and enjoy the tastes of summer that comes with the season opening of Jumpin Jacks! Anyone in this area probably has their own “Jumpin Jacks story”. I have a lot! It was one of the first places we visited as a family having just moved here from Maine (imagine being the 15 year old out with her family on a Friday night to this popular student hang out!); it was the place I met lifelong friends and my husband being part of the US Waterski Show Team that practices and performs on the neighboring river bank; it was the place where I a...

I scream! You scream!  We all scream with glee because Dairy Circus is rebuilding!!Anyone who's been a part of our community for any length of time can probably tell you exactly where they were on the evening of April 18, 2016 when fire took one of our beloved institutions.  Located directly across from the high school, it's been a popular spot since 1970.  When my family moved here in 1982, it was the place my brother and I rode our bikes to and had lunch (boy did we feel cool!).  Through the years I can admit that an ice cream sundae has been more than one dinner after softball games, that their sub platters have been enjoyed at many of our events, and I'll now make it public knowledge that their potato salad is the only recipe for that dish that I get excited for.It was terrific to h...

If you have a conversation -- especially a sports related chat - with anyone from Scotia-Glenville (home of the Tartans), the name Joe Cremo is bound to surface sooner rather than later.  Joe was part of our super talented, two time Class A state champion basketball team and a graduate of the Class of 2015.  In his junior year, Joe committed to the University of Albany.  Honestly, I wasn't sure how much we'd hear about Joe after he left us.  Don't get me wrong, he left us talented but anyone who knows anything about Division I athletics knows that it's easy to get "swallowed up" and stuck "paying your dues" while you wait for playing time.  Not Joe though!!!!   Joe is the epitome of so many success related phrases: "Luck is the diviend of sweat.  The more you sweat the luckier you get"....

The countdown is on... In less than 3 hours, Scotia's icon - Jumpin' Jacks - will be open for the season!  This is always a BIG day for our area and this year it's extra special...  Jumpin' Jacks sits on the edge of the Mohawk River. Late last summer when  our region was hit by Tropical Storms Irene & Lee, the buildings were underwater. Yup.... underwater!  It's not the first time owner, Mark Lansing, has had to wrestle with Mother Nature but, this time was the most severe. Aside from the great burgers, my favorite lemonade around, and let's not forget the ice cream, Jumpin Jacks is a great place to run into many of your neighbors, catch a waterski show in the summertime, enjoy the nearby park, or relax & take in the sights on the river. Happy Opening Day Jumpin Jacks & best wishes for ...
