Snow in October? - Town of Ramapo Road Closures as of 10/31/2011 Would you believe snow in October?  It seems that fall has bypassed us, or at least that winter has snuck in a quick preview.    The prediction of between 5 -9  inches of snow for this weekend was not really taken seriously by too many.  After all, we haven't seen snow in October since 1962; to say the least, we were unprepared. The snow storm that Rockland County experienced this weekend, which left about 6-7 inches of heavy wet snow on the ground, reeked lots of havoc to the county.  The trees, still green with leaves un-shed, couldn't withstand the weight of the snow, and fallen limbs and branches were the result, taking with it many of the power lines.  Many of the local streets are still blocked with downed trees and ...

BIG SCREEN CLASSICS AT THE LAFAYETTE THEATRE, Suffern NY The Big Screen Classics film series sponsored by The Town of Ramapo, has returned to the Lafayette Theatre in Suffern NY.  You've missed the September 17 (The Guns of Navarone) and the September 24 (Dodsworth) showings, but it's not to late to catch the rest of the series. There's a great lineup of classic films planned. Lafayette Theater is a beautiful old-time movie palace that was built in the late '20s. It's unique in that it contains a fully functioning Wurlitzer organ. For those of you that plan to attend any of the Big Screen Classic shows, you're in for a treat. At each of the showings you'll have the opportunity to hear an organ music recital by Jeff Baker on "the mighty wurlitzer" if you get there a half hour early (at 1...

Wine Lovers Journey through the World of Wine  - at the Suffern Library In my day, libraries were a place you came to to do research, reading and to check out books.  Boring places compared to today's libraries!  Today's libraries, at least the ones in my neck of the woods, are more like community centers with lots of interesting scheduled events. This weeks scheduled event of interest at the Suffern Free Library is a wine tasting class.  It will run weekly on Tuesday's, for a total of 6 sessions beginning on September 20 through November 1, with no session scheduled on October 11.  You'll get a chance to learn all you'd like about wine basics and to sample wines from around the world.  The first session will concentrate on the wines and vineyards in  New York and California. These wine...

Celebrate National Grandparents Day -  in Rockland County, NY Did you know that the first Sunday after Labor Day is Grandparents Day? I'm a grandmother of 25+ grandchildren and had no idea that there was a day honoring me. Marian McQuade was the founder of National Grandparents Day. She and her husband the parents of 15 children and the grandparents of over 40, began a campaign to set aside a day for grandparents. She hoped the day would have a threefold purpose: To honor grandparents To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children. To help make children aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer. Through her efforts, Grandparents Day was declared a national holiday by President Jimmy Carter in 1978 Grandparents Day was meant to...

A Great Escape _ The New York Renaissance Faire 2011 Tuxedo NY Though this year's New York Renaissance Faire was the 34th annual one and I've been living in Rockland County for almost that long, I've never had the opportunity to attend one.  I might even have missed this this year's faire if fellow activerainer Debbie Walsh had not called and convinced me to take a day off and join her.  If you've never attended a Renaissance Faire, you still have a chance to come to New Yorks' and enjoy a day full of fun, where fantasy rules. It's held weekends from Aug 6 Through Sept 25, 2011 at Sterling Forest, in Tuxedo Park, NY. The Faire is a recreation of a Renaissance or Medieval village, filled with costumed actors, crafts and games, giving visitors the illusion that they have stepped back in t...

School Bus Safety Summer is almost over and the school year will be starting soon.  In Rockland County NY we're lucky to have universal bus-sing for our school children.  That means that every school age child is entitled to be bussed to school irrespective of where they live in proximity to the school.  The buses will be out there in full force and we're all concerned for the safety of our kids who will be out there walking to their bus stops or waiting for them to come. Now might be a great time to review some of the Ramapo Central Shool Districts Bus Safety Rules with your children: Bus Safety Rules: Arrive at your bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is due and wait for the bus well off the roadway. Enter the bus in single file and in an orderly manner. No pushing. Sit down...
