The Lafayette Theatre, located at 97 Lafayette Avenue, Suffern NY in Rockland County is a Suffern and Town of Ramapo landmark.  Dating back to 1924, it has the distinction of being the oldest single screen theatre in New York metro area.  Popular first run films are shown here during the week; on week-ends some older films are shown as well, and several times a year they sponsor themed special events.  The theatre has a grand pipe organ that is played on week-ends and at themed events. The seating capacity of 1000 seats makes it a perfect location for town gatherings and happenings. Though it's old, the theatre acoustics are great but, to make it competitive with all the newer big screen theatres, the Town of Ramapo purchased a digital projector with the newest digital 3-D technology, f...

Be an Astronaut for a day at the Lower Hudson Valley Challenger Learning Center in Suffern, NY. In the early 1980s NASA began to investigate the possibility of sending an American civilian into space. Christa McAuliffe, a teacher, was chosen. On January 28, 1986, the Challenger Space Shuttle, with seven astronauts and Christa McAuliffe on board took off and  exploded 73 seconds after takeoff.  The Challenger Shuttle was destroyed, but the crew's mission to educate and inspire the youth of this country is still ongoing. To date, there are Fifty Challenger Centers across the United States and around the world, established in memory of those that died on the Challenger Shuttle.  The centers were designed and created to inspire and motivate children to take an interest in space, science and...

This week-ends Home and Garden Show in Suffern NY was just a great example of Social Networking at it's best! The snowstorm they predicted for the eastern seaboard bypassed Rockland County, NY completely, making the turnout at the the 23rd Annual Suburban Home and Garden Show (at Rockland Community College in Suffern NY) a great one.  Friday's crowds were thinner than usual, scared away by the impending snowstorm but that made Saturday and Sunday morning's traffic heavier than usual.  Maybe the economy has made prospective buyers think twice about making a move; maybe they know that to sell in this kind of market they need to have their homes updated and in great condition; maybe they're just exploring all the possibilities and just curious about what's new and available out there or ma...

The Town of Ramapo has been working in conjunction with the United Nations, Partners in Health and Rockland Paramedics  to help the Haitian Relief Effort.  They are collecting money and supplies on an ongoing basis and flying it to Haiti.  The towns's first shipment was sent to Haiti on Sunday, January 17th.  But there's still much more that is needed.  The most needed item, of coarse, is money.  If you'd like to contribute, checks can be made out to "Ramapo Haitian Task Force" and mailed to:            Town of Ramapo   237 Route 59 Suffern, NY 10901 Other much needed items are bandages, over-the-counter medications, personal hygiene items (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes) and water.  If you'd like to donate any of these supplies, they can be dropped off at these locations: Hait...

GO GREEN on Battery Saturday - The village of Suffern, NY is trying to do their part in GOING GREEN. They have set Saturday, November 7th, 2009 as the first “BATTERY SATURDAY” – meant to encourage people to keep their toxic batteries out of the waste stream. Deputy Mayor John Meehan dreamed up the idea. Though the Town of Ramapo recycles batteries the drive to Pomona to the Rockland County Solid Waste Authority to dispose of them is often just not worth the trip for just a couple of smalll batteries. On Battery Saturday you won’t have to go far - batteries will conveniently be collected at Suffern Village Hall from 9AM to 3PM. So, take advantage of the opportunity to easily and safely dispose of old batteries the GREEN way and schedule battery replacements, maintenance and check-ups for...
