There has been for some time now a dedicated Web site where you can find all types of updates and information regarding the state of Tappan Zee Bridge replacement construction work which has been nicknamed "THE NEW NY BRIDGE PROJECT". Please visit the site to stay informed. It can be found at www.newnybridge.com and deals with a wide variety of topics related to the project. There is also a section with an interesting picture gallery depicting the floating TZC owned super crane with the moniker of "I Lift NY", a ship mounted titan officially named "Left Coast Lifter", which is on it's way to Sleepy Hollow from San Francisco via the Panama Canal.

GM has entered into a contract with a joint venture, the developer team of Diversified Realty Advisers of Summit, NJ and CA-based SunCal, to redevelop a large tract of land formerly occupied by it's assembly plant on the Hudson River shoreline in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Village officials stated that it is possible for work to start in late 2014 since they finally settled with neighboring Tarrytown on how to remediate the traffic impact of such a massive project. The village approved a special permit for the construction of 1,177 housing units, a 140 room hotel, a multi-plex cinema, as well as restaurant, retail and office space last year.  It is estimated that the developers will spent about $1 billion to transform this 100 acre parcel into one of Westchester's finest multi-use water front n...

Sometimes the sights of the season reflect the cold of winter.  We are now near the solstice so the trees are all bare  and the sun sets early. I took this photo today just as the sun was starting to set.  The cloud cover over the horizon was thick and the cause of the darkness.  It just looked so dramatic against the bare tree, that I had to shoot it.  Yesterday we had a rather large snowstorm, but the temperature increase had melted the snow off the tree tops and all that was left were the bare branches. © 2013 – RGHicks – http://fotosonthefly.biz – All rights reserved. - See more at: http://fotosonthefly.biz/966/sights-of-the-season-a-winter-tree-in-a-winter-sky/#sthash.wy5B1x0k.dpuf

A little over a week ago Westchester was having one of its "climate change moments.  I was on the road playing fast and loose with a tornado watch as a line of storms approached  from the west.   I kept an eye on the weather but thought I had a bit of time before the worst of the front moved through.  So I decided to go down to the RiverWalk in Tarrytown and see the progress on the new Tappan Zee Bridge. That was all well and good,  but perhaps not the smartest move in the world for someone who has a healthy respect of  all things high wind such as hurricanes and tornados.  You know the reporters who stand out  in the middle of a category 3 storm reporting the weather conditions to the world?  Well, thats not me.  No death wishes here.   However the weather changed a lot faster than I ...

Every couple of weeks, I find myself on the RiverWalk in Tarrytown or Sleepy Hollow looking towards the work being done on the new Tappan Zee Bridge.  Every morning work crews depart from Hudson Harbor and head out to work on the multi-year project that will result in a new Tappan Zee Bridge connecting Westchester and Rockland counties.   The bridge spans the three miles of the Hudson River that separates the two counties.  A large bridge by any standards. I for one am glad to see work on the new bridge begin.  Like much of the United States infrastructure, the Old Tappan Zee Bridge was being given a very low safety rating by engineers. Personally,  its been many a year since I thought the bridge was safe enough to cross without saying a silent prayer before pointing my car towards the ...

Fireworks are really fun to photograph, if you know what you are doing.  Personally, I love taking photos of fireworks on the water because you get the added benefit of the water reflection which seems to make them extra special.  Sister villages Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow joined forces once again to create a wonderful display on the Hudson River right next door to Lighthouse Landing. I managed to get there about 2 hours ahead of the main event.  I decided to work from the vantage point of the River Walk  on the Tarrytown just south of Sleepy Hollow.  I  was early enough to get a nice spot and I shared a bench with a very nice family who had two adorable little girls who were having the time of their lives enjoying the River Walk.  Another benefit to being on the water is that although...

The photo above is a scene that will be history in a fairly short amount of time.  I took it of the “old” or “current” Tappan Zee Bridge from the River Walk right at the border of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.  For those who are interested, the Hudson Harbor complex was slightly south and to the left of the shot. In any case, three designs for the new Tappan Zee Bridge were just released for public consumption.  They are are very different from the original bridge design and will change the landscape forever.  You can view them at this link.  Behind all the ramifications and politics there is an urgent need for a new bridge.  Where many feel the the system has fallen short is with the loss of a proposed mass transit system that would have relieved the traffic flow across the bridge and e...
