HUD Homes at Buckeye Lake and Last Week's Bidding Results Many of the homes available to all bidders, including real estate investors, are outside the Columbus metro area.  You should not limit yourself to the City of Columbus or its suburbs when you look for great deals. You can find even better buying opportunities in small cities 20 or 30 miles outside fo Columbus. On today's list you see homes in Newark, Lancaster, Ashley and so forth. This may not be the time when you are thinking about living at a lake, but that's exactly where we found a couple of HUD homes at a bargain price.  Two houses on today's bargain hunter list are at Buckeye Lake. Since moving to Licking county Ohio, I have been fascinated with some of the history of Buckeye Lake.  It has such a rich fascinating history and such a great city.   Buckeye Lake was originally known as the "Big Swamp" by local Indians.  The lake was formed during the glacial period.  Later the Ohio Canal was built which turned the "Big Swamp" into Buckeye Lake,  The canal flooded and drowned most of the boggy site which caused one section of sphagnum to break loose and float to the top.  This is now known as The Cranberry State Nature Preserve.  One of very few known "floating islands" in the United States.  At one time the island spread over 50 acres but has been steadily shrinking.  This island still produces cranberries every year.  They do give small tours of the island one time p... 12/23/2007
