With the recent warm weather, but while the trees are still missing their foliage, visitors to the Hocking Hills often leave asking, "What are those purple bags hanging from the trees?" While they are still able to be seen once the leaves return, this time of year allows ample opportunity to spot a peculiar purple bag hanging from some of the trees through out the Hocking Hills. The bags are not special to Hocking County. They can be found in other wooded rural county forests as well, but those visiting the cave areas are sure to spot them. So, what are they? These pretty little "gift bags" in the trees are actually a sticky trap for the Emerald Ash Borer. The Emerald Ash Borer is a very small insect native to Asia. They are so small that 5 ash borers could fit on a penny with room to ...

I do much complaining about being without electric, so I'm confident I could learn a few words of advice from Hide-A-Way Hills local neighbors. This was a quick photo in a snowstorm in Bremen, Ohio on SE 664. The city of Bremen is located ~10 minutes north of Hide-A-Way Hills, Ohio.

Top 10 Lists While the typical Hide-A-Way Hills Buyer asks for many of the items which made the Realtor Magazine's 10 Home Features Buyers Request list, here's my top 10 requested features in Hide-A-Way Hills.Hide-A-Way Hills requests include:1-Privacy2-No Grass Cutting3-Open Kitchen4-Large Gathering Areas5-Outdoor Entertainment Space6-Fireplace/Woodburners7-Wood ceilings or walls.8-Laundry (May seem silly, but many of the smaller cabins may not have laundry availability yet.)9-Garage (Can often be solved with outbuildings to store toys such as golf carts, ATV's, jet skis, and boats.)10-And my number ONE request is lots of WINDOWS!

These annual events are both newer and longtime favorites for members and their guests of the community of Hide-A-Way Hills (HAH), near southeast Ohio's famous Hocking Hills vacation destination region. The Colonial Dinner brings "colonists" in authentic period dress, along with classic songs of the season by The Taylor Family, and hearty traditional fare for a winter's evening meal. The Candlelight Service has been a highlight for many, many years, also held at The Lodge each Christmas Eve...thanks to the community's Chapel Committee and Choir volunteers. For almost 50 years, HAH has been among Ohio's many lake communities, and perhaps a best-kept secret, offering its members boating, fishing, golf, tennis, stables, lodge-restaurant-microbrewery, playground, park areas, shooting range...

This now-annual event honors the countless hours of volunteer service provided to the gated resort community of Hide-A-Way Hills (HAH), near southeast Ohio's famous Hocking Hills vacation destination region. For almost 50 years, HAH has stood out among Ohio's many lake communities, offering its members boating, fishing, golf, tennis, stables, lodge-restaurant-microbrewery, playground, park areas, shooting range, beach, docks, airstrip, outdoor chapel (non-denominational), 24/7 security, and more. And even with the tremendous work of the HAH security, maintenance, food service, and management staff, things just couldn't be as unique as the are without the help of hundreds of volunteers each year....

Located near southeast Ohio's famous Hocking Hills Region, the gated resort community of Hide-A-Way Hills features plenty of annual events, and probably the biggest gathering of the year is the Dam Jam.  This year saw what's considered to be the event's largest turnout ever, with as many as an estimated five-hundred members, family, and friends celebrating a summer evening beneath the Lake of the Four Seasons.  A hog roast serves as the main course, and members bring along a covered dish to share as well....so there's certainly no reason to go hungry.  This year, the Social Committee added some great extra attractions, including a moon bounce and face painting for the kids, along with train rides. And then there was another new highlight, the dunk tank.  Thanks to all who attended, an...

While showing homes and cabins in Hide-A-Way Hills, Ohio this past week-end, I heard a whistle which sounded as if sombody was attempting to garner my attention. After glancing around a bit, I found my secret caller tucked in one of the bushes outside my home. I believe it to be the Eastern Towhee and have attempted to identify based on its call. While towhees have various calls, here's this little creature's very loud call which I heard Saturday. In an earlier winter post, I believe I may have mistakenly identified this bird as the Spotted Towhee. I suppose it was an easy mistake since the two species were actually considered the same bird until 1995. At this time, I'm just not sure now.Any ornithologist out there that can lend a comment to its identification?

From funds being provided by the HAH Lakes Committee, 2 week-ends, and half a dozen volunteers, Hide-A-Way Hills Volunteers have installed a new 72' docking system complete with benches. The new installed docks will hold up to 8 boats for daily use at the Hide-A-Way Hills Beach with the first dock being reserved for 15 minute use only.Volunteers in Hide-A-Way Hills are a very important part of how many new projects are accomplished. This is just one more improvement the Volunteers can add to their list. From these pictures, we can see it was a job well done

With 3 different access points to the Lake of Four Season, I am often asked what it looks like out on the lake. While not terribly exciting, here's some video I shot on my first trip out on the lake this past week.

While out for a long bike ride this past week-end, I ventured on to various gravel roads which led me deep into some of the surrounding areas of Zaleski State Forest. I've been fortunate to have seen large rhododendron plants in many southern states, but the plant pictured below was probably one of the largest I've seen growing in Ohio naturally, undisturbed, and not as a shrub in somebody's garden. Rhododendron grow abundantly through out the Appalachian Mountains. So much so, the plant has the honor of being the state flower of West Virginia, and is depicted on the Flag of West Virginia. My guess is the size of this particular plant is really no big surprise to many, but one I thought I'd like to add to my wildlife picture collection.
