Worthington (Ohio) Village Green is the way Don O'Brien identified his photo on FlickrO'Brien's photo from September 1941 of a Worthington Library Group makes me wonder if the Worthington Library was at that time the building facing the northeast quardrant of the Green. Of course it  in  Old Worthington Building Gets New Options    I say it was built as a library in 1927 so it is not a stretch of the imagination that it could be a library a mere 14 years later.    Timeless Worthington Ohio Village Green Worthington - Patriot Day September 11, 2008 Worthington St. John's Episcopal Church Worthington Good Friday Service Worthington Presbyterian Patriot Day - Worthington 2009 September 11, 2009   I thought there was an Arbor Day post about the Worthington Green here too but I can not find...

Wilson Hill - Worthington street names brought to you by Maureen McCabe  - Like many towns the settlers names are worked into school names, street names, park names and subdivision names.  Medick Estates was developed by Frank C. Medick. Didn't Shakespeare have Juliet say: "What's in a name? That which we call a roseBy any other name would smell as sweet." When I read the chapter (one page) about Medick Estates in Jennie McCormick's book 'Worthington Neighborhoods'  book and saw the names Frank C. Wilson and Ralph N. Wilson, I thought AHA!  Wilson Hill... The story of Wilson Hill neighborhood in the book starts out with Orange Johnson, Wilson Hill was the Orange Johnson farm.  The farm including the house (now own by the Worthington Historical Society) was sold to Miles Pinney (do you k...

Old Worthington's Clearview Subdivision - brought to you by Maureen McCabe I guess I don't think of there being subdivisions within Old Worthington but of course there are, because Old Worthington is the historic Village of Worthington which was planned and built by pioneers from New England.  In 'Worthington Neighborhoods' a book written by Jennie McCormick and published by the Worthington Historical Society, Clearview is NOT one of the neighborhoods described but there is information about the Clearview Subdivision in the the "chapter" (one page) on Medick Estates since Frank C. Medick was developing it at the same time he was building his personal residence, Boulder Lodge in what someday became Medick Estates.  Worthington's Clearview Subdivision was platted in 1928. I sometimes thi...

Medick Estates neighborhood Maureen McCabe - I've never sold a home in Medick Estates IF I have ever even shown a home in Medick Estates it's been years. Medick Estates are Worthington's "mansions"  when we moved to Columbus from Dayton we went looking for "mansions" in Upper Arlington but we could not find them.  We did not know where to look in Upper Arlington or elsewhere in Columbus for mansions.  People told us Upper Arlington was like Oakwood in the Dayton area.  No one mentioned Marble Cliff, or east side mansiony Columbus areas.  No one mentioned areas to gawk at older, interesting homes in Worthington. I am sure I first saw Medick Estates on a REALTOR® tour.  I know the 1950's ranch style homes mixed in among the  "mansions" bothered me.  That was long before I developed a lov...

Worthington football - at this weeks football games the Worthington spectators will probably look a little different than they did back in 1941. Mike Harden's Columbus Dispatch column on Sunday was about a new book written by a gentleman from Bexley.  I wrote about that column on ColumbusBestBlog.com   Sorry, Downtown Columbus is Closed “Once upon a time.. “   long, long before I ever moved to Columbus there was a downtown with ladies with hats and gloves and men in fedoras and suits according to Mike Harden’s column about a book written by David Cohen."  They were even wearing fedoras in the suburbs.. to football games!  Or was Worthington a Columbus suburb in 1941?  Was Worthington just a little old fashioned town north of Columbus in 1941? Are those fedoras?  I am not 100% on 1941 ha...

I am reading a book...  I am reading a real honest to goodness print on paper book.  I used to be a big book reader but I have not really read books in years.  The title of the book , 'Worthington Neighborhoods'  gives away that it is not a novel.  The slim paperback was written by Jennie McCormick.  I bought the book at the Old Rectory, the historic property at 50 W. New England Avenue, the corner of New England and Oxford, The Doll Museum.  Some of what I have read so far is nothing new to me.  Some I knew from hearing stories about Worthington.  Other tidbits I've gleaned from reading about Worthington history online.  Much of the information from the Worthington Historical Society, The Worthington Memory Project  and the Worthington.org website.   The name McCormick figures prominan...

I went to the Patriot Day 2009 - Observance on the Village Green in Worthington today.  Worthington City Council President Lou Goorey talked about the days when you remember where you were when you heard.... Pearl Harbor was attacked JFK was assasinated He referred to the Space Challenger Shuttle Disaster  I thought at first I did not remember it.  Trying to remember while writing this of course I remember living in Akron on January 28, 1986.  Christa McAulife, the teacher  was one of the crew.  Judith Resnick the other female crew member was from Akron.  I was not watching when it exploded but I remember it being on the news nationally and locally because Resnick grew up in Akron, Firestone Park High I believe. When the September 11 attacks happened. September 11, 2001 when the first...

"OLDE WORTHINGTON Historic area nominated for register" I heard the Old Worthington News when I was in the office yesterday.  I heard from a Worthington Historical Society Member  that the state had accepted the nomination now it is up to the National Park service whether Old Worthington will be on the National Register of Historic Places.  Alan Johnson in the Columbus Dispatch wrote: "The nomination of the Worthington Historic District -- bounded by North, Morning, South and Evening streets -- was approved yesterday by the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board."  Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board National Register of Historic Places As an interested observer it  seems like the Worthington Historical Society, Worthington city and business leaders had  submitted Old...

In a poll in The Other Paper, which was called 'This, That or The Other', Worthington won.  It was in the category of Places,  Worthington vs. Upper Arlington and Worthington won.  People could have voted for another place (The Other), a write in for example for Westerville or Dublin or Massey's Pizza...The Other Paper said someone wrote in Massey's Pizza often and despite the category?  Massey's Pizza is a PLACE isn't it?  A number of places.   Not sure it got written in for suburb type places though like Worthington and Upper Arlington. Worthington got one of the longest write ups of any of the winners in any of the contests but it says it  was a close "race." From  Take That! "The race between Worthington and Upper Arlington was the closest in the This, That or the Other poll’s “Plac...
