The Ultimate Slap In The Face After a closed door meeting council voted to stick Georgina Taxpayers with the bill for a defamation lawsuit by Mayor Grossi against the former Georgina Leisure services Director John McLean. You can read more about this decision and  Help stop your tax dollars from paying for the lawsuit. There is also an online petition to stop the funding for Mayor Grossi's lawsuit. An article in the Georgina Advocate indicated Mayor Grossi would donate any funds he receives as a result of his lawsuit to a charity yet to be named. The irony is he will likely get a charitable tax receipt that he can then use to reduce his personal taxable income. The Ultimate Slap In The Face Should this happen it would be the ultimate slap in the face to taxpayers who would have footed t...

Do You Trust Politicians To do The Right Thing? Over the years we have all heard or read stories about politicians who have betrayed the trust of those who elected them. We have even come to expect some of it from politicians at the federal level. The most accountable form of Government has traditionally been at the local level but recently even that is questionable as some of them have ignored the trust placed in them by the electorate and done some questionable things. Those of you living in the Greater Toronto Area have seen it first hand with the much loved Hazel McCallion of Mississauga. "McCallion has been Mississauga's mayor for 33 years, holding office since 1978. She is affectionately called "Hurricane Hazel" by supporters as well as the media at large for her vibrant outspoken...

Local residents are being warned be on the lookout for the safety of their pets and livestock by a Udora resident who had an Alpaca destroyed by a bear or cougar. Wild animals such as deer, rabbits, raccoons and skunks are often spotted in and around Udora and other areas of Georgina. On occasion we also hear of a resident black bear or two being spotted enjoying a feed of seed at someones bird feeder or galloping across their yard. This is the first time we have heard of a large animal being attacked and killed by another animal other than by coyotes.  This past weekend the brown Alpaca in the picture was attacked and killed, possibly by a bear or cougar, in the east side of Udora.

2011 Federal Election The deed is done and we are headed for the polls. Lets not waste time over the next few weeks with discussions over the rational for or against an election at this time.  It is time for the electorate to be heard, lets move the conversation away from the political agenda of the various parties and reframe the issues to represent what we want addressed not what the politicians want to use to make points at our expense. It does not matter if you want the election or we need one we are headed for the polls, on May 2nd, so lets make it about our issues not theirs..   Short Term work / Employment Opportunities. One good thing about an election is it creates opportunities for short term work Are you out of work, or looking for short term employment opportunities? Electio...

Municipal Election 2010 - You might ask yourself is there a connection between my properties assessment for taxation and my right to vote? YES - The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) can have an Impact on Your Right To Vote? You may not be on the Voters List if you recently purchased a property. MPAC is responsible for creating the preliminary Voters list, this list is given to the Township in July who use this information to create their final voters list. Property Purchased early in 2010 I discovered that for some reason MPAC did not put a purchaser of a property on the voters list, even though they and the Township were aware of the change of ownership (the town mailed their tax bill with all the appropriate assessment information on it to the new owners) long before J...

You And Your Property Tax Bill - Wetlands In her Post Uxbridge - It's Official - Spring Has Really Sprung Kathy speaks of the spring time danger of our flooded streams and rivers. Every year we watch the levels in our back yard rise at least a couple of feet. Our worst year saw the water rise over four feet with a surge in the middle of the river (caused by the force of the water through the dam) another four feet on top of that.   Wetlands And Property Values The value of properties that are adversely affected by wetlands is usually adversely affected as well.  A portion of our property goes under water for periods of time, and what we can do with it is hampered by flooding and regulations thus affecting the value of our property. This adverse affect entitles us to a reduction in the a...

You And Your Property Tax Bill - The Illusion and The Reality       For many the process of appealing your property assessment is as convoluted as this picture. Many people think that they are appealing their property tax bill when they arrive at an appeal. They do not realize that it is in fact their assessment that they have to appeal. In a post How Property Assessment in Ontario is Calculated based on the explanation of how your property assessment is calculated by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) Ty Lacroix provides some insight into the assessment process here in Ontario. Reading his post and the information on MPAC's web site there is the illusion that your assessment should be fair and equitable. What I have found is that in Reality there is little that is fai...
