If you are local, or if you have ever visited Kingston and the 1000 Islands area, you're sure to have heard of Kingston's LEAST best kept secret:  Chez Piggy!  (see menu) It is one of the favourite eaterys in the City, created by Zal Yanovsky of rock band, The Lovin' Spoonful: ( Nearly 20 years ago, former wacky Lovin' Spoonful guitarist, Zal Yanovsky, renovated an abandoned limestone stable and launched a dining experience that blends grace and gusto, taste and imagination -- and helped make Kingston a destination for food lovers. Located in the heart of Kingston, Ontario's historic downtown, the whimsically named Chez Piggy is the culinary offspring of Rose Richardson and Zal Yanovsky. Yanovsky died of a heart attack in December 2002. He was 57. ) They have a fantastic cookbook that i...

Kingston, On Looking to replace a fence?  Perhaps you're in need of a new privacy fence ?  You should consider bamboo fencing.  Not only is bamboo fencing aesthetically pleasing; it is also a great green alternative to using conventional hardwood fencing. Jimmy Dean of Kingston, On, 613 483 3919 just created a gorgeous fence on the corner of Helen and Brock St, Kingston. Bamboo is one of the most easily renewable natural resources on the planet, and as sturdy as (and sometimes sturdier than) most hardwoods. Bamboo forests grow at a very rapid pace, as bamboo is actually a type of grass. If you need to replace your old fence and are considering bamboo fencing, here are a few more things to consider. You can use them vertically or horizontally as the above photo shows. (not Jimmy's) Types...

Just in case you needed one more reason to buy a home in Kingston Ontario . . . Kingston came in first place in Amazon's 2012 contest The Most Romantic City in Canada !! I was born and raised in Kingston so this comes as no surprise to me.  I now live just a few minutes outside the City, in the Town of Gananoque which is equally (or greater) romantic but this contest was limited to Cities in excess of 80,000 people. (we have 5200 if we're lucky) The fun part is both places are equally gorgeous, both situated on water, Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River respectively.  Both are filled with fantastic architecture and amazing history (think War of 1812) (think home of Canada's first Prime Minister).   You can easily be within 20 minutes of hospitals, university, college,  theatre, world...

Housing evolution driving average price appreciation  in Canada’s major centres, says RE/MAX   Record investment dollars poured into Canadian housing stock over past decade     Billions spent in new construction, renovation, and infill over the past decade have contributed to a serious upswing in the calibre of Canada’s housing stock, propping up residential average price in the country’s major centres, according to a report released today by RE/MAX.      Since 2000, the value of a Canadian home has doubled, rising from $163,951 to $339,030 in 2010.  Nowhere has the upswing been better captured than in both the value of residential building permits issued nationally between 2000 and 2010—at $340 billion—and the estimated $450 billion spent in renovation.  The impact of these two forces ...

On Tuesday, February 8, at 07:00 PM, the “Live” Lawrence Welk Show is coming to The Grand Theatre in Kingston, Ontario! I'm told that "wherever it plays, it is one of the most delightful and entertaining experiences to grace a stage". I may be dating myself here, but I grew up with the show every Saturday night. We screamed and laughed at the outfits and cringed at some of the songs but still, we were glued to the set each week. I am embarassed to say, I still recall many of the names of the stars of the show!! Yikes!!! We're told it will be the full production from vocalists, music makers, dancers and the famous Lawrence Welk Show bubble machine! Five original cast members from the weekly television series will be on the “Live” Lawrence Welk Show. They include the effervescent Anacani,...

Many many moons ago, I grew up next door to Old Fort Henry.  We played there, got into trouble there and it is such a fixture of my childhood.  From Wikapedia:   "It is located in Kingston, Ontario on Point Henry, a strategic point located near the mouth of the  Cataraqui River where it flows into the St Lawrence River, at the upper end of the Thousand Islands. The original fort was constructed during the War of 1812, when present-day Province of Ontario was a British colony known as Upper Canada. The British anticipated the possibility of a United States attack on Point Henry due to its proximity to the Kingston Royal Naval Dockyards (the site of the present-day Royal Military College of Canada). The loss of this vital shipping route would have cut off supplies to Kingston and the rest...

How would you like more than 60,000 hits a day on your blog?  How would you feel if you were asked to pen a book from your blog experience?  Would that be awesome? You bet it would and Neil Pasricha has done just that.  This former student of Kingston's Queen's University has seen this awesome success stem from his blog 1000awesomethings.com  After a particularly bad day, Neil wanted to remind himself of all the good things in life.  Me, being a believer in Gratitude Journals, I can understand this wholeheartedly.  When things seem darkest, we have to focus on everything that can make us smile.  The tiniest of things that most people would pass over.  That is what Neil focused on with his blog and I am so thankful that he did.  It makes for a wonderful read first thing each morning.  Wh...

I found a full leg of pork the other day and decided I just had to have it.  Didn't have a clue what I was going to do with it but I had to have it.  So I researched online and found this fabulous Cuban recipe by Martha Stewart.  With that settled, what to have on the side?  Well Cuba Libres and Mojito as cocktails for sure :0)  That was easy!! How about Black Beans and Rice!   What else would go with it?   . . .   Twice fried Plantains!   OMG  was that a great meal if I do say so myself :0)  The flavours with fabulous and everyone left happy. To quote Martha: "Not to be confused with ham, a fresh leg of pork is relatively uncommon today, despite its sumptuous layer of excess fat and accompanying flavor. This natural cushioning is rendered during roasting, enveloping the meat in goodnes...
