This video narrated by Tom Brokaw was filmed and televised prior to the opening of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.  My thoughts are that it was meant to give American Olympic viewers some insight about their neighbours to the North. Or for Alaska, to the south. I thought it was amazing how much information was squeezed into just over 6 minutes of airtime.  I even learned things about my own Country that I didn't know.  Both the American and Canadian athletes are working hard at winning medals at our host games. What better time than to take a few minutes to explore the United States' and Canada's historical and geographical relationships.

Genealogy has long been a fascinating interest of mine and many members of my family, both on my Mother's and on my Father's side, have done extensive research into our family's past. Searching for your roots can be both exhilarating and frustrating, all at the same time. It can lead you to far-off places, both in your mind and physically and once you are bitten by the genealogy bug, it can become an all-consuming passion. For those who would like to do research into their family history, did you know that access to Ancestry.com is available free of charge at the Oakville Public Library?Oakville Public Libary is offering two free workshops on genealogy. The workshops will teach you how to use 'Ancestry Library Edition' and also show you other resources that are available online to help ...

Spring is in the air today in Oakville. Ice and snow are retreating and the waterfowl are returning from their winter vacations. It was the perfect day to take a drive through Old Oakville and head down to the Lake Ontario shore. A lone kayaker took advantage of the beautiful day and braved the choppy lake. The Mallards are arriving back from their winter vacation south.   ©2010JoSmith

Awhile back I was asked if it was okay if some of my photos were used for the 2010 Halton & Peel Region telephone book and Yellow Pages.  My photos? I was rather surprised but certainly had no problem with the idea.  I was asked to email a bunch of different photos and that was the last I heard of it. A couple of weeks ago a large yellow phone book containing over 1700 pages arrived on my doorstep.  I started flicking through the pages and found two of my photos right near the front.  Now they weren't this large mind you, and somehow they had been reversed and were showing the mirror image.  But they were mine and had my name and the little copyright symbol in the corner.  My funny goose with one leg up was on a page of with local community numbers and right beside the Chamber of Commer...

Getting Your House Ready for Sale in Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton or Mississauga. A successful sale in a short time period, with a maximum sale price, is an achievable goal if you take the time to prepare your property before you put it up for sale. Determining your home's 'curb appeal' is one of the most important things you can do.Starting just beyond the property line at the front of the house, face the property and determine what catches your eye first. Are there unkempt garden areas and overgrown shrubs and weeds? Is the front entrance area/landing cluttered with items that perhaps could be stored away in the basement or a garden shed? Is the siding clean and bright and is the wood trim tidy and not peeling or damaged? Is the garage door clean and in good condition without any pe...

I have found a new restaurant in Oakville that is fabulous...it is called "The Monk". This is a traditional high end Pub in the Glen Abbey/River Oaks area.  This restaurant exudes an air of friendliness and you feel very comfortable from the time you enter the Pub. The Pub theme is aptly designed around a tasteful golf theme which provides a very warm ambience. Each area of the restaurant has its own plasma tv's and the rooms are centrally focused around a very majestic square oak bar. This bar carries about 5 domestic and 12 imported drafts on tap but don't forget about the value concious wine menu either! I ate here recently myself and I am told that there are excellent monthly dinner features and on our last visit we were served a huge succulent parfait with 6 jumbo shrimp. The beef ...

One of Oakville's best kept secrets  is Waterworks Park.  Located at the bottom of Kerr Street on the shores of Lake Ontario, this park offers a serene setting, enjoyable at all times of the year.  A path heads eastward towards the harbour and ends at a staircase that leads up to Tannery Park.  The view from the top of Tannery Park is incredible and overlooks the harbour, the Toronto skyline,  Oakville Towarf and the pier and lighthouse. The Larry Cain trail leads down the hill and  onto a path towards the west side of the harbour.  Oakville native  Cain won  gold and silver  medals in canoeing  during the 1984 Olympic Games.  The Town has future plans to improve the trails and landscaping in the west harbour area. Waterworks Park is just one of many beautiful parks on the shores of Lak...

We've had an  easy winter so far,  here in Oakville. Very little snow other than a light dusting here and there. No school closings or disruptions.  They are getting rain in Vancouver for the Olympics.  Some worried that there wouldn't be enough snow for the ski events. It's been snowing in Dallas and in many parts of the U.S. that rarely if ever see the white stuff.  No one can blame Canada this year and say it's the cold Arctic air travelling south. I can't predict the weather other than knowing that spring will arrive as usual around the 21st of March.  Our Canada Geese decided to stay home for the winter and they continue to make lovely messes in our parks and harbourfront. I found this Snow Goose hanging out with the Canada Geese on the shores of Lake Ontario here in Oakville.  I'm...

Family Day is a statutory holiday that is recognized by  most Canadian Provinces.  It is celebrated on the third Monday in February.    On Monday, February 15th, the Town of Oakville has a full day of free activities lined up for family fun.  "Make Your Move Oakville" offers a schedule of events for all family members at participating town facilities.  Free public skating and swimming, fitness classes, library programs, sports demonstrations and much more are being offered on an even larger scale than last year.  All of this is being offered free due to the overwhelming success of last year's Family Day celebrations.  What better way to spend a holiday Monday than to head out to one of Oakville's many arenas, community centres, pools or libraries to spend some quality family time with t...

If you are thinking of buying a home or real estate in Oakville, Ontario and would like the opportunity to try and save some money by buying a property or home that may need work and is accordingly lower priced, it's good idea to consider Power of Sales and Foreclosures. Oftentimes a home under Power of Sale or Foreclosure needs cosmetic work or renovations of some kind and may be priced comparatively lower than homes that are not under power of sale. There is no way for you to search on the mls system for power of sales since the owner of the property is not displayed to the public. If you would like to be notified when ever a power of sale property comes on the market in your area and within your search criteria, you need to have a real estate sales representative assisting you. REALT...

A comprehensive guide for preparing your house or condominium for maximum profit! Find out how to make both the outside and the inside of your house a seller's dream- even if you are short on time or tight on money! I. From House Seller to Marketer Selling your house can be a stressful and time-consuming process, and it is very easy to get frustrated if you do not get the response you want from buyers. After all, you cannot believe someone criticized your gorgeous Victorian bathroom, calling it old fashioned and dated...how dare they! Unfortunately, developing a thick skin is a necessary part of selling your house. It can be difficult, though, especially if you are moving from a house you love. An attachment to your house makes it especially difficult to see the house's faults, but that...

Oakville Council Unanimously Passes Air Quality Bylaw to Protect it's Citizens - First in Ontario! For the first time in Ontario, a city has passed an 'air quality bylaw' to protect it's citizens from fine particulate matter floating in the air. Oakville councillors unanimously voted to pass an air quality bylaw on February 1, 2010. Airborne particulate matter that is less than 2.5 microns in size is what the city is concerned with. Using Oakville's levels for PM (fine particualte matter), the Illness Cost of Air Pollution Model indicates that Oakville will have 80 premature deaths which can be attributed to airborne PM of 2.5.By reducing the PM concentration by even one microgram, Oakville can save 8 lives annually. By collecting emissions information from businesses, industries and res...

The number of home sales in Oakville in January 2010 increased by a whopping 133% over January 2009. Average sale price and median sale price also rose substantially.  In January 2009 we were still in the throes of an economic downturn which resulted in lower than average sales for the month. It's important to keep that in mind when comparing the stats but since May of 2009 we have seen an overall recovery in the Oakville, Milton & District housing market.  All indications point to a healthy balanced market for 2010.  Interest rates remain at an all time low and first time buyers are driving the market.  Inventory is still low in Oakville resulting in many listings selling with multiple offers, often over list price.  More new listings have been gradually hitting the market over the la...
