 Kennett Square residents may see tax increase Property owners in Kennett Square will be paying an average of $116 more in taxes next year if council adopts the 2011 budget as presented Monday night. The budget includes a 3 percent increase for all uniformed and non-uniformed employees in the borough, as well as a 3 percent increase in water, sewer and solid waste fees. The millage rate in Kennett Square stands at 3.85 mills. One mill generates approximately $220,000 for the borough. The budget calls for a 10 percent increase in health insurance co-pays, plus a higher deductible health insurance plan. All capital outlay has been removed from the budget except for the purchase of a loader to perform tasks like snow removal and debris cleanup. We knew it all along as Kennett Square just keeps getting better and better. Maybe because Matt Fetick is now mayor. The Borough officially is now  one of America's coolest small towns for 2010. The September issue of Budget Travel includes Chester County's Kennett Square on its annual Top 10 list. It chats up  the town's homey, tradition-friendly image, with mentions of Sinclair's Sunrise Cafe & Tea Room; Burton's Barber Shop, family-owned for 118 years; the "quirky" Mushroom Cap gift shop; and fine dining at Talula's Table. Kennett Square has recently approved a ban on dogs at all Kennett Square events, with the exception of service-type animals. There has been an "unwritten rule" up until this point, but the key word there was "unwritten". There was no official ordinance, thus no way to enforce it. Officials do have some valid points. You wouldn't be able to take your pet into Disneyland or Six Flags unless he or she was a service dog.  The main focus here is the safety of all of those attending these festivals and events. In years past dogs were mingling through a crowd which always includes small children and even infants.               The Kennett Square Farmer's Market is held every Friday from May 14 to October 29 from 2-6 PM at State and Union St. (Route 82).  There is a great variety of locally produced goods including Amish baked goods, cut flowers and plants, European bread, artisan cheeses, home-made jams and jellies, and grass fed meats. Everything looks so good! Chester County, Pennsylvania's Town Tours and Village Walks visited Kennett Square Thursday night, and after meeting in an area in the center of town known as the Genesis (after the company who built the office building and parking garage) Walkway, we set off for a tour which concentrated on early schools.                  We started out at the Kennett Friends Home on State Street.  From the 1850's until 1900, it was the Eaton Academy, a school for boys and girls. We were greeted by a local man who represented an early director of the school. The DAILY LOCAL NEWS reports that Kennett Square's $30 million redevelopment plan for downtown passed its final hurdle this week when the Bayard Taylor Memorial Library Board of Trustees agreed to participate. The project will result in increased business and expand community and recreational services for area residents. Called the Kennett Area Community Development Plan, it involves four entities -- the Kennett Area YMCA, the Anson B. Nixon Park, the Bayard Taylor Library and the borough. The YMCA will get a $ 4 million, 14,928-square-foot expansion of space. The borough's maintenance shed will be removed and a new one built at a cost of $3 million. A high-tech but green treehouse has been built by the staff of Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, and the Treehouse Workshop, using designs and construction techniques that preserved the tree from the branches in the canopy down to the roots. Although it rises 20 feet into the tree, neither does it bolt directly into the tree nor into massive concrete foundations. Using a technology called "Pin Foundation," it anchors directly to the ground using an unique combination of pre-cast concrete forms with steel pins. This foundation is said not to harm the tree roots. The interior of the treehouse shows the use of reclaimed lumber from an old dairy barn, a warehouse, and a toothpaste factory. The Chrysanthemum Festival at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania features both the white "Thousand Bloom" chrysanthemum with 718 flowers blooming on ONE stem, and the shield shaped Seiko mum with 172 flowers developed by only one other grower, master horticulturist Tadashi Imafuko, of Japan. The variety of chrysanthemums is amazing, with these spider mums just 2 more examples of plants on display.
