Eastern Market in Lancaster, PA Lancaster, PA has several farmers markets.  The largest and most famous is the Central Market off Penn Square, which has been in operation since the eighteenth century.  A lesser known market is the Eastern Market, located on East King Street near Shippen Street. Fresh produce and baked goods are as available in the city as they are in more rural areas of Pennylvania. A beautiful mural frames the Eastern Market. A hypnotic Caribbean rhythm lends a musical background on a recent Saturday morning.

Wednesday is going to be a busy day in Lancaster County!  Our country's very own President Bush is scheduled to arrive in Lancaster at approximately 10:30 am, and will make his way through Manheim Township as he heads towards the Hempfield area.  He will be speaking to The Jay Group in their new $26million headquarters in W. Hempfield Township.  Invited by the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, this event begins at approximately 11:30 am and is closed to the public. If you plan on being out and about in Lancaster anywhere near and between Manheim Township and Hempfield, you might want to plan on extra travelling time or take alternate routes.  So, does anyone think Mr. or Mrs. Bush would want to take a look at some beautiful, presidential Lancaster County homes for sale during their visit?

Last Saturday morning I was able to stop by one of my favorite art shows in the County - the Landis Woods Art Show on the grounds of the Landis Woods township park in Neffsville, PA.  This show is more relaxed than some of the larger shows and the admission is free.  The artists are local and fun to spend time chatting with.  In fact, that's what I like best about the Landis Woods Art Show each year - I always meets someone new and interesting.  This year I was pleased to talk to Keith Grebinger, a Neffsville fine art photographer and also Jennifer Cavalcante of Jena' Studio photography.  We shared about our mutual love for photography and art.  The Landis Woods Art Show also hosts local musical talent each year, who lend a festive air to the event.  Lastly, hot dogs and other food is p...

The demolition phase has been completed for the Lancaster, PA Convention Center.  The hodge-podge of additions behind the historic Watt & Shand facade, which has been preserved to be included in the new Center, are now nothing but a memory.  The buildings behind and next to the former Watt & Shand department store are gone as well.                             The gigantic cranes that have been instrumental in the demolition, are now  lifting huge concrete footers and sections of preformed foundation wall into place. It's an awesome sight to stand under the cranes and appreciate the gigantic size of this project. Concrete subcontractors are busy pouring the sub-basement floors.                              Reinforced concrete footers are being put into place to support the high rise Conve...

September 7, the first Friday of September, was a perfect late summer evening for a celebration of downtown Lancaster!  Temperatures in the high 70s and a soft, almost imperceptible breeze made for a most pleasant outdoor atmosphere, and Lancastrians took full advantage of the city's First Fridays program. Cafes on North Queen and North Prince Streets were open for business with tables out by the sidewalks, and people took full advantage of the pleasant weather to have a light repast and watch the passers-by.                 Street musicians were out in force, from Caribbean rhythms to folk, jazz and blues guitarists.                                                                                                                                                                            ...

Tucked away in a nice corner of Lancaster County, PA is Windolph Landing Park.  Part of the Lancaster Township network of community parks, Windolph Landing Park is special because of it's quiet setting and proximity to the Conestoga River.  Windolph Landing homes is a community built in the late 1980's with several styles of home, all detached single family units.  Average resale price right now is about $200,000, so the area is nicely affordable at just over the county average sale price.  The park is set back in the lower portion of the Windolph Landing community, along Wilderness Road which loops around.  Go to the extreme back of the loop and you'll find the entrance to the park there, somewhat disguised by the driveways that flank it.Windolph Landing Park has a very nice jungle gym...

The 27th Old Fiddlers Picnic was held August 4th at Lancaster County Central Park, sponsored by the Lancaster County Fiddler's Association.  Central Park, named for its central location,  is located at Chesapeake and Strawberry Streets in Lancaster. The Fiddlers Picnic had a schedule of performers, including Jimmy LaRue and his Red Rose Ramblers, from Lancaster.  Perhaps the most fun, however, is that groups come from around the area year after year with their instruments, and play their own music in "pickup" groups.  I brought my guitar a few years ago and sat in with a group of musicians I had never met before.  As long as I could keep up with their selections, they were happy to have me sit in!                      Bluegrass music is the theme of the Old Fiddlers Picnic.  Bluegrass wa...

In my humble opinion, northeast Lancaster City represents the best value for a city buyer's money right now.  Especially if you're a first-time homebuyer or one with minimal space needs.  Prices are still excellent, the streets are nice and the homes have loads of charm.Where exactly is "northeast" Lancaster?  I would define it as an area north of New Holland Ave, with streets which are "diagonal" to the layout of Lancaster Proper.  As you can see from the map, the boundaries would be Reservoir Street on the NE, Marshall on the SW, Park Avenue on the NEW and New Holland Ave on the SE.This neighborhood is one of tree-lined streets, classic brick homes (almost every home is brick) and and out-of-the-way lifestyle. There are lots of different home styles, but the predominant floorplan is o...

Adopted From Wall Street Journal The downturn in in the housing market has many builders, real estate agents, and home sellers paying close atttention to curb appeal and landscaping as a way to generate buyer interest and boost sales prices.Research conducted by the National Association of Realtors says landscaping is "very important" to almost 20 percent of buyers, and the University of Washington -Seattle researcher Kathleen Wolf says landscaped lots sell for about 7 percent more. The exact amount depends on location, with Palm Beach, Fla. - based real estate agent Nancy Macaluso noting that palm trees and flowers can boost a home's price by 10 percent to 15 percent in comparison to the sales prices of properties without such landscaping. However, most appraisers and tax assessors do n...

Construction continues on the Marriott Hotel/Lancaster Convention Center.  Some of the big cranes now in place make a spectacular scene as they start their high-rise work! With a projected opening in the fall of 2008, the Convention Center is one of several projects designed to revitalize the City of Lancaster.                   The lobby of the hotel will incorporate the facade of the former Watt & Shand department store on Penn Square, which was once on the National Register of Historic Places.                                      When it is completed, the tower will be one of Lancaster's tallest buildings. Peeking over the parking garage in the background, you can see the spire of the 1766 Trinity Church.  The boarded up building to the right will be restored as a historical site. Co...
