As my wife had the day off on Friday we decided to go visit as it is only about twenty minutes away and the link looked interesting.Well this store is in Landenberg, obviously, right on the creek, and it was busy, we parked behind the store as the front was full, and when we went inside it was pretty busy. What had attracted us was the bread, which looked home baked, but, unfortunately is not, but still pretty good.It seemed to be a place where people stopped on their way home to pick up a sandwich or something else they had. Sometimes it's not always what you know, but WHO you know. Luckily for the New Garden Twp. PA Historic Commissiion, they have a friend in Richard Gaw of the Chester County Press.Richard came to the Commission a couple of months ago to investigate a controversy brewing with a local developer who, in the past, always seemed to get projects approved in New Garden. He had a property under contract which, in addition to a c. 1790 house (1913 photo) , had a possibility of subdivision for another 7 houses. Preservation minded New Garden Twp. in Chester County PA has a Historic Commission determined to preserve its heritage. In 2010, they moved the historic Lyceum building up the road to a township park, where it was placed next to the Lamborn House, which is still in its original location and already restored by the Township and the hard work of Commission members.According to Dr. Peg Jones, a Commission member, the New Garden Lyceum was part of a larger movement which began in New England about 1826, and flourished during the middle of the 19th century. Down at the very south east corner of Pennsylvania, Landenberg, PA is a beautiful array of rolling Chester County hills still rich with lots of farmland and also the White Clay Creek Preserve. It is bordered by Maryland to the south and Delaware to the east and very close to Newark and Hockessin, Delaware. This was part of the land inhabited by the Lenape Indians and many of the windy roads were originally deer trails. Some of the historical landmarks are the tiny town center comprised of the Landenberg Store, church and apartments.
