"Everybody's Hometown" is the motto of Media, which is the County Seat of Delaware County, Pennsylvania.  Media is located at the end of SEPTA's (South Eastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) Regional Rail R3 and Trolley Line 101 that takes travelers to downtown Philadelphia and beyond. The trolley runs on State Street which is a bustling tree lined street with businesses of all types, from long established businesses like Tancreed Dress Shop and Deals to relatively new ones like Trader Joe's and Ten Thousand Villages. One can easily spend time on foot in Media visiting art galleries, shopping in stores that sell handcrafted items or clothes, to all the necessary stores one would find in a town that houses the county court house. All this walking can make one hungry, but that is n...

Arch Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) - ABC'S OF REAL ESTATE (A-Z/A)Circuit breakers...they cut an electrical current when there is an over load on the line potentially saving property and lives.  And then there are Arch Fault Circuit Interrupters (Arch Fault Breakers), that will cut an electrical current when is senses an arch of electricity in a line with greater potential to save property and lives. What's the difference?Circuit breakers are the workhorses in most homes today.  They protect the wire that they are connected to which is behind a wall and unseen.  They will trip if they sense a short that causes masses amounts of electricity to race through the circuit and when they sense a heat build up inside the breaker; in both instances a fire is prevented.Arch Fault Breakers are us...

SEPTA 101 Trolley Line Construction Update: Just wanted to pass on a quick reminder that the 101 Trolley is now under construction. Effective from December 14 through March 14, 2010, the SEPTA 101 Trolley Line will be temporarily closed for construction, maintenance, and repair along the tracks from the Woodland Avenue station through Media.  Temporary shuttle busses will be operating along the route during this period seven days a week.  This should add about ten minutes of travel time. In addition, the SEPTA 102 Trolley construction is now completed and has resumed normal operation. There will be additional closures on both lines in 2010 beginning in March as construction moves toward the 69th Street Terminal. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let me know...

The Delaware County PA Sheriff's office has produced a brochure on "How to Save Your Home from Foreclosure" which provides excellent background information on the foreclosure process. This foreclosure information was put together by Sheriff Joseph F McGinn and the Delaware County Sheriff's Office and is a nice concise explanation of the process, the options, and the contacts for anyone who may find themselves having a problem with affording their home payments.  It is by no means all-inclusive but affords a quick overview of what is available in the area for Delaware County PA residents.  It is not yet on their website so I have reproduced the information here - see attached. The key point to remember for anyone facing the possibility of foreclosure is to not ignore it but reach out, le...

I went to see "Showboat" at the Media Theater http://mediatheater.org  this afternoon.  My oldest daughter, Christen, plays viola and was in the pit orchestra.  I had never seen this show or even the movie before.  I was expecting something similar to "State Fair".  Upbeat and Fun. Several things surprised me.  First the script with it's outdated and politically incorrect language made me sit up and take notice.  Oh my, our societly has come a long, long way.  Secondly, it was a sad show........with sad characters...........and sad story-lines. What I most want to tell you though is that the classic song "Old Man River" could be an appropriate commentary to today's situations.  It brought me to tears - 3 times.  It speaks to the human struggle that we all experience and muddle through. ...

If you enjoy garage sales then you will love this annual event that will be taking place in Media this coming weekend 9am - 4pm Saturday and Sunday.  Residents of Media have been invited by the Media Business Authority to participate in this event and may have their house posted in a map that shows the locations of houses having a garage sale throughout the borough.  This event is a great way to pick up some bargains while you are strolling around this very picturesque town.

In September 2007 a new type of library opened its doors to the public in West Philadelphia.  The items it has on loan are not books but tools; tools that can be used to make things, repair things, maintain things and beautify things.  I remember seeing such a library in the mid 1990's when I lived in Seattle and I am so happy now to know that they are catching on in other parts of the country. The reasons I am happy to see one here is that too often people buy a tool for a project and then they never use it again.  It sits on a shelf or in a drawer never to be seen or used again.  What a waste, someone could be using it!  I also like the community building potential such a place offers.  Not only are there the tools to be borrowed, but there is the potential to educate the public and of...

Well - it looks like we may be losing our Congressman but possibly gaining a new Senator.  Delaware County PA is once again lining up to be a key battleground in the 2010 election on the national stage. Last week, the local Delaware County Times reported that "Sestak (is) All But In For Senate Race".  What does this mean?  What are the local impacts?  Too soon to tell, but let's put a little perspective on it. Joe Sestack is currently the local Pennsylvania US Representative in Congress (Brady represents a small portion of southeastern Delaware County).  He won his 2008 race last year against Republican W. Craig Williams by a vote of 209,955 (59.6%) to 142,362 (40.4%) .  He continues to be popular in the local area and won his seat originally by beating out longtime local Representati...

Well, today we're at the end of the 101 Trolley Line in Media PA Delaware County.  The SEPTA 101 Trolley runs from the 69th Street Terminal Station out to just west of Orange Street on State Street in downtown Media.  The final stop is just two blocks north of Baltimore Av/Baltimore Pike and two blocks from the County Courthouse. Any of the downtown Media trolley stops are convenient for commuters coming into the borough.  State Street itself is lined with commercial activity, restaurants, and other entertainment.  The surrounding area is filled with professional offices, the Delaware County Courthouse, and supporting economic activity.  Although there is no dedicated SEPTA parking in the area, the trolley stop is within easy walking distance to many residential areas and offers conveni...

Are we giving the media more control than they deserve? I mean look how easy it has become to track real estate activity based on what's reported in the media as the daily mantra. Sure there are problem areas across the country, but for the most part I believe there is pent up energy to buy real estate and many markets are in fairly decent shape with only a minimum roll back in prices from their highs. For example, we had a great September in our local market place and it looked like things were really starting to shape up, until the media starting beating the Great Depression mantra. Does anybody think for one minute in this world wide economy that the richest nation on the face of the planet is going to be let slip into a depression? Sensational journalism and fear mongering have co...
