A recent article in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette finally put a glimmer of light at the end of the real estate tunnel for area homeowners. Since the beginning of 2008, July marks the first DECREASE in mortgage defaults in the Pittsburgh area. Whew! (collective sigh) And not a drop in the bucket kind of decrease either - but a 29% drop over July 2007, which is not only substantial but encouraging. Just one more indicator that the Pittsburgh market marches to the beat of its own drum! "The record foreclosure pace we set at the beginning of the year is slowing, which may mean 2008 won't be a record year for foreclosures after all," quotes Dan Murrer, Vice President of RealSTATS, a real estate information company. After seeing continued growth since we started sharing statistics in April (though just a slight increase in July), the Mt. Work is now almost completed in Mt. Lebanon to tear down the former Ground Round Restaurant near the Galleria.  As you may have heard months ago, the new development - to be called Mt. Lebanon Pointe - will house a Family Christian Bookstore in part of the 8,000 square foot space.  It's expected to open this fall. Both the Ground Round and the old Chi-Chi's restaurant nearby had been vacant for a while, so it's nice to see progress is being made.

Sorry that this info is a couple months dated - it was posted on my blog (www.thepittsburghrare.com) back in May but thought it would be useful statistical information to have posted out on ActiveRain. We have been pretty fortunate in Mt. Lebanon to not have been affected by the housing market downturn like most of the other real estate markets in the nation. This mostly has to do with the world class school district, the neighborhood's proximity to downtown Pittsburgh, and the strong sense of pride in the community. Side note - I am originally from Toledo, OH and moved to Pittsburgh for college.  After graduating, I took a job at PNC and have lived in Pittsburgh ever since - but have been a Lebo resident for the last 6 years. For years now, I've salivated over Pamela's signature hotcakes and yearned for a South Hills location.  I (along with my taste buds) was thrilled to find out not only are they coming to the South Hills, but they have chosen to open their sixth location in Mt.
