Coffee and Ice Cream in Newtown, PA - Zebra Striped Whale on State Street in Newtown Borough My friend and I have been trying to get our kids together ever since I helped her relocate to Newtown, PA earlier this year.  As the kids settle into the school year, we were finally able to narrow down a time.  I suggested taking the kids to ice cream at The Zebra Striped Whale on State Street in Newtown Borough. It's the perfect place for a quick playdate.  Sugar for the kids, caffeine for the Moms.  Pretty much a home run, right? There are lots of great ice cream flavors, fun cones for the kids, and apparently a fun mix-in bar where they make "whirlwinds."  (I'm kinda glad I didn't see that, actually.  It would have been hard to resist.) For the Moms - there's plenty of caffeine to suit any ...

Newtown Township Parks and Rec Releases their Fall 2010 Schedule If you aren't taking advantage of the activities provided by Newtown Township's Parks and Recreation Department, you're missing out. I've participated in numerous programs through the township, and even as a "non-resident" (I live in Wrightstown Township), the cost is ridiculously low for the value of the programs. Some of the programs I've done: Kid's flag football program at the Newtown Athletic Club Pilates at Newtown Swim Club Kid's summer camp at Newtown Elementary Schoo Toddler Gymnastics at God's Love Church There are a tremendous array of programs, all held locally so that they are a convenient drive for those who live in the surrounding townships. I'm thinking about these: Zumba held on Thursday nights at Wrightst...

Over the weekend while our two older boys were away my wife and I decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Duck Sauce in Newtown Borough.  It is hands down our favorite place to eat any time of the week.  The atmosphere is fantastic.  When it's just the two of us it is our romantic night out with the lights dimmed just a bit and a table for two where you forget about the rest of the world for an hour, but at the same time we've been there with the kids (definitely a kid friendly place) and then we still feel a bit romantic, but it's not like everyone else is staring at you when your kids are... well being kids.  It really is the best of both worlds.  You can also choose to sit outside which is what we did this weekend because heck it's on State St. and we love to people watch.  However...

Top Reasons for Buying A Home In Bucks County I read Karl E. Case's op-ed piece in the NY Times yesterday, "A Dream Home After All".  For those of you who don't follow real estate regularly Case is one half of Case & Shiller Index which is a comprehensive home price index for the US going back many years.  The article discusses whether, or not the American Dream is dead, and it got me thinking what does the American Dream mean to each one of us?  I'm sure it's not the same for everyone, but I do believe that owning a home is still part of this dream and here are my Top Reasons for Buying A Home In Bucks County. 1. Pride of Ownership:  Paying off someone else's mortgage doesn't instill much pride, because heck at the end of the day it's your apartment, but usually you can't paint it how ...

Those of us who live in Newtown Borough already know the benefits of being able to walk to just about anything. Supermarket, hardware store, pharmacy, ice cream shop, starbucks, clothing stores, pubs, restaurants etc. Not to mention one of the loveliest parks for miles around Tyler State Park. So, big deal we say, of course we can walk everywhere that's why we bought our home in Newtown Borough! Well now there are official sites that rate the 'Walkability Factor' which adds value to the Real Estate in Newtown Borough. People hunting for homes can use walkabilty factor as one of their criteria along with price, school district etc. For example my house on Greene St rates 95% - Walker's Paradise!   When we consider that the average home in America rates 49% we know how lucky we are. All t...

It's the best time to sell your Bucks County condo and buy the single-family home you've been dreaming about.  When condos were first springing up in Newtown and the surrounding Bucks County area in the 1970's & 80's many people said condos are the first thing to lose equity and the last to gain it back, but this couldn't be further from the truth today.  In Fact, in 2001 the average sales price of a condo was 59% of what single family homes in Bucks County were selling for.  In 2009, that number jumped to 70%!!! That means if you decided to buy a condo in 2001 you would have needed an additional 41% to be able to purchase a single family home, but today if you sold the same condo you would only need another 30% to buy that single family Bucks County home.  To ensure the averages ar...

Not blowing our own horn...well maybe! But if you are in the market to sell your home in Newtown Borough here are some facts you should know.  So far in 2010 13 homes have sold in Newtown Borough and the average days on market were 150. We sold 3 of those homes (nearly 25% of the inventory) and our average days on market were 35. Well you say, that's ok but what did these homes in Newtown sell for? The 13 homes that sold so far, averaged 93.82% of their asking price.   The Cosack Team's listings averaged 98.51 of their original asking price. With both of these homes bringing full price!        In this market it takes a great team to get your home sold for top dollar and in a relatively short time. We use our 20+ years of experience to make that happen. The property has to look good, fee...

My family and I had a great weekend in and around Newtown, Bucks County where I grew up and now live only a few minutes away from in Holland.  On Friday morning, I woke my eldest son up early (6:30 am) and we walked from our house in Tapestry in Holland down to the Village Shires Shopping Center.  We stopped at the Dunkin Donuts and picked up breakfast for everyone.  Since we were going to be taking a little break at the Dunkin Donuts so he could regain his energy (It's a mile and half to get there so a long way for the little man) I decided we'd get a box of munchkin donuts so he could munch on a few while I had my coffee and this way when we got home there would still be some extra donuts for his brother as well.  I finished my bagel and cut my son off after 6 munchkins because he sti...

Homes in Newtown, PA  - A little bit country, but close to the rock and roll     We spent Saturday afternoon shopping for school supplies for my boys' triumphant return to Wrightstown Elementary School in a few weeks. Oh, they're excited about the new stuff, sure.  But me?  I'm just beyond excited.   Moms, can I get an "Amen?" Driving home, after a busy day of shopping, and eating out, and doing all of the last minute "Get the crayons for a quarter" hustle of the day, I was able to grab this gorgeous picture of the sun setting over farmland.  One of the best things about buying a home in Newtown or the surrounding areas is that you get at live amongst this gorgeous rural scenery, but can still hit up a Target or a mall when you need to.  Rural living without having to can your food or s...
