Home Inspection in Pottstown reveals Hard Water Issues I was at a home inspection in Pottstown last week for James, a homeowner that was getting ready to sell his home that he bought 18 years ago as a new construction.   Jim has maintained his home quite well over the years but had a reoccuring issue he wanted my opinion on.  He said that he has had to replace his water heater every 4 to 5 years when he knows they should last longer. A gas water heater lasts around 10 years and an electric water heater is around 15 years..   I suspected this homeowner was having hard water issues in the home.   I could see limescale on a number of his fixtures and recommended to have  his water tested.   It's inexpensive to test.  I told him to check with the local Home Depot as I heard they give out fr...

Pottstown Home Inspector is Baaaack! Has it really been... 3 years?   It really has!  Wow, time really does fly by!  I was blogging almost daily on home inspections in Pottstown and industry news, local events, and some other fun, informative topics. I realized today just how much I missed it!   Activerain is such a great community to share information with and learn from.  Over the couple of years that I dedicated to networking through Activerain,  I made some good friends on here locally and nationally and this forum has been great for my business. I decided today was the day-  Pottstown Home Inspector is baaaack! What happened?I hate to say that I'm guilty of using the "too busy" excuse.  Business became so busy that I decided something had to go and I stopped blogging.  I tried to c...

Coventry Mall in Pottstown Posted for Auction in September         This article breaks my heart, because the Coventry Mall has a very warm place in my soul and holds many fond memories from my teenage years... It was the place where in the 1970's teenagers could go to visit with friends, hang out at the Old Orange Julius and just be kids.  I remember shopping at the old shoe store (when the mall was still outdoors and not enclosed) with my very first paycheck I ever earned.  I hope that this sale brings good things and breathes a breath of fresh air into this piece of my childhood...            (Updated 4:00 p.m.) NORTH COVENTRY — A notice was posted on the doors of the Coventry Mall Monday announcing that the property will be sold in a public auction.    The announcement was seen as ...

Using your IRA/ 401K for Real Estate Investing (Pottstown) My wife, Tina, and I have been investing in real estate around Pottstown, PA since 1997.  As self-employed professionals, we found it was next to impossible to get financing after the economic downturn started.  We started to look at other options and one of those options was using our retirement funds for real estate investing.  In other words, we started using our 401K and IRA accounts to buy homes! This type of investing is called "self-directed IRA" investing and we are just sorry we didn't try this sooner.  "Self-directed" means that the account owner can select any assets of their choice for investment purposes, provided it's not prohibited by the IRS.  Real estate is one of the popular choices, but you can also direct you...

The NEW Industrial Revolution is alive and well in Pottstown.  New companies are joining the ranks of Pottstown's community all the time.  The latest to join the emerging growth in the area you ask?           Workers at the Sly Fox Brewing Company, which is building a new beer brewery and canning facility on Circle of Progress Drive in Pottstown PA, showed Wednesday (Jan. 18, 2012) on its Facebook page that new equipment is arriving daily for installation. The huge white cylindrical tank being moved in (below) joined several others also waiting to be hooked into the production chain. “We’re putting together an entire gallery of the new brewery’s progress but new things are arriving every day!,” brewery personnel explained on their Facebook wall. The family-owned business has brewed more...

Do you Trust your Home Inspector? (Pottstown) Trust is probably one of the most important things to me, personally and in my business as a home inspector in Pottstown, PA.  I naturally trust people and want them to trust me back. When I started my home inspection business in Pottstown over 10 years ago, I knew I would have to prove myself over and over again to establish a good base of agents and clients who would trust me as the best professional inspector for their needs.  Looking back, how did I build a successful business as a home inspector?  It all came down to trust and that takes many forms: BackgroundHighlighting things like my Master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and my background in real estate rehabbing still gives me credibility today.  People want to trust m...
