      Recipe of the Month       Coconut Custard Pie       2 c. whole milk     3 tbsp. coconut       Mix:   4 tbsp. sugar   2 tbsp. butter   2 egg yolks   2 ½  tbsp. cornstarch       Meringue   Beat egg whites adding 2 tablespoons sugar.       Mix in:   ½  tsp. Cream of tartar   1 tbsp. vanilla           Scald milk and coconut. Mix next 4 ingredients and add to milk. Bring to boil over slow to medium heat, stirring constantly. Stir in vinilla. Beat egg white, adding sugar and cream of tartar until firm.       Put in 1 (8 inch) baked pie crust and top with meringue.   Nearly $8,000 has already been raised for the National Brain Tumor Society thanks to pre-event efforts. The event will be held on Saturday June 14th at Legion Memorial Park in Quarryville, PA. The start and finish area will be located at the upper pavilion which is accessed from Park Avenue. Registration will be open from 7 to 8 AM with the race starting at 8:30 AM. The event will be held rain or shine.       Bob Bard was a Quarryville native that was diagnosed with Stage IV glioblastoma in January 2010. He died a year later. His wife and adult children created the Bob Bard 5 K Run in his memory. All the proceeds from the Run will be given to the National Brain Tumor Society.   It's interesting how we seldom think twice about the town where we live. We wake up, go to work, come home, shop and do a myriad other things without paying much notice. I'm a Realtor living in Quarryville Pennsylvania located in the southern part of Lancaster county. The natives predictably refer to the area as "The Southern End". The town itself is typical small town Americana. There are no particular landmarks that jump out and grab your attention. The area surrounding it is rural with considerable farm land. I've lived here for forty-two years. I raised my family here, worked here, attend church here and keep up on happenings but seldom really think about it. As a Quarryville Realtor, I am a loyal customer of "Fergie's". I thought I might share a bit of their history and philosophy. A philosophy that I think makes them a great place to do business with. It was 1916, the year that E. E. Ferguson and George W. Hassler, Sr. opened a business that still remains a focal point in the southern end of Lancaster County today.  Ferguson and Hassler's, or "Fergie's as it is more familiarly known, has evolved over the years into a large supermarket, but is still under the ownership of one of the original families.   Since I'm a Quarryville Realtor and have seen the now flooded quarries that sit not far from my house the name of the town has always seemed self evident. But there is a bit of history behind it. Abram Barr, son of Martin Barr, who built the “Ark” that I mentioned in a previous blog first recognized the important fact that Quarryville marked the lower limit of the limestone in Lancaster county. The less fertile land of the “Lower End” lacked a necessary element, lime. Barr quarried the limestone that was burned in stone kilns into lime with the then abundant chestnut timber.   In 1825 Abram Barr laid out about twenty acres in lots of one-eighth of an acre each and these he sold to farmers to take out stone for their own use.   Marinated Flank Steak     2 tbsp. lemon juice   ¼ cup soy sauce   1 tbsp. brown sugar   ½ cuo oil   ¼ tsp. Garlic powder   1 tsp. Ginger   1 flank steak       Mix all ingredients except the steak. Blend well. Marinate steak in plastic bag; seal well. Place in bowl and refrigerate 3 hours or longer. Cook on grill or broil. Grill is best.
